Introductory paragraph<br />

• Open generally <strong>and</strong> lead reader to the specific thesis?<br />

• Include a clear thesis statement <strong>and</strong> comment (main points of body) at the end?<br />

• Include author’s full name?<br />

• Include full title of work?<br />

Body<br />

• Does each paragraph begin with a clear topic sentence that covers the entire point I’m<br />

developing in that paragraph?<br />

• Do I use specific details from the text to support each main point?<br />

• Do I document each detail accurately?<br />

• Do I make clear <strong>and</strong> smooth transitions between each point/detail, using transitional devices?<br />

• Do I conclude each body paragraph by summarizing the point I develop <strong>and</strong> by making a<br />

transition to my next point?<br />

• Do I have all of my main points <strong>and</strong> details organized in a logical manner? (coherence)<br />

• Do I avoid going off subject? (unity)<br />

Style & Grammar<br />

Have I—<br />

• Used active voice?<br />

• Used active, specific verbs?<br />

• Kept verb tenses consistent?<br />

• Written about literature in the present tense?<br />

Have I avoided—<br />

• Expletives?<br />

• Passive voice?<br />

• First <strong>and</strong> second person pronouns?<br />

• Talking about myself, my writing, or “you” in this essay?<br />

• Run-on sentences?<br />

• Sentence fragments?<br />

Format Guidelines<br />

Font face <strong>and</strong> size<br />

• Please make sure the font you choose is professional <strong>and</strong> readable <strong>and</strong> no larger than Arial (10)<br />

or Times New Roman (12)<br />

Margins<br />

Spacing<br />

• One inch (1’’) all around<br />

• Double space outline, composition, <strong>and</strong> works cited<br />

Pagination<br />

• Begin numbering on page 2 of the actual essay <strong>and</strong> continue through the works cited<br />

• Place page number (no “p.”) in the upper right h<strong>and</strong> corner of the page after last page<br />

Documentation<br />

• Use MLA internal, parenthetical documentation. See h<strong>and</strong>outs on MLA format. Be exact!<br />

Submission<br />

• Submit <strong>your</strong> essay stapled in chronological order from bottom to top:<br />

1. Final draft (top)<br />

2. Peer evaluations <strong>and</strong> revisions (in between)<br />

3. Rough draft (bottom)<br />
