HOW TO USE AN AUTOMATIC (DIAL) TELEPHONE 

To place a call remove the receiver and listen for 

the "dial tone". When you hear it, dial each figure of 

the number you are calling. 

To dial pla-ce your finger in the dial opening over the 

figure wanted and turn the dial clockwise until your 

finger strikes the finger stop. Then remove your 

finqer and allow the dial to turn back. Do not touch 

the dial while it is returning. 

After you have dialed you will hear either the 

"ringing signal" or the "busy signal". 

If you h.we repeated trouble dialing a number, then 

call the oPerator and she will assist you. 

TO CALL ANOTHER PARTY ON YOUR LINE 

To call a party on your own line do not dial the 

listed number of the other party, but dial "9" and the 

last figure of your own number and the last figure of 

the number you are calling. 

After you have dialed this special number, hang up 

your receiver. Your bell, as well as the bell of the 

telephone you are calling, will then ring. When your 

bell stops ringing it indicates that the called telephone 

has been answered. If no one answers, disconnect by 

lifting your receiver for a few seconds and then replacing 

it. 

GENERAL INFORMATION 

TONES AND SIGNALS 

Dial Tone--A continuous, steady hum, the signal 

to start dialing. 

Ringing Signal-A "burr-rr-ing" tone, repeated at 

regular intervals. 

Busy Signal-A steady "bun-buzz-buzz" tone. 

Voice Recording Signal-A short, high "beep" tone 

heard on the telephone line about every 15 seconds 

indicates that the person with whom you are talking 

is recording your conversation by means of his voice 

recording machine connected to the telephone line. 

This siqnal is provided by the Telephone Company 

for your protection. If you do not want a record made 

of your conversation, ask the person with whom you 

are talking to disconnect the recording unit. When he 

disconnects his recorder the signal is no longer heard. 

The "beep" is produced automatically by a device used 

to connect the recorder to the telephone line. 

Use of a recorder without the signal is contrary to 

the provisions contained in the Company's tariff co~ring 

voice recorder connector equipment.

BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS WITH THE COMPANY 

All matters relating to new telephone service moves 

termination of service, directory listings, adjustment 

of accounts. etc., are handled at the Company's 

business office. 

. For movinq telephones we request subscribers to

spec•f•ed date. If no particular date is stated the 

order will be completed as soon as possible. '

ESTABLISHMENT AND FURNISHING OF 

SERVICE 

APPLICATION 

Appllcatlon lor telephone service shall be made on 

the Company's standard forms whtch become contracts 

upon the establlshment or the service. All the re&"ulatlons 

contained in the tarilf shall be part of such 

contracts for service and o.U fneilittes and service 

rendfred thereunder nre subject to the Company's 

tariff. rulPs and reculntlons as on file at the Company•s 

business office. Requests from subscribers for 

add1tionol sen·ice or equipment shall be made In writing. 

Upon approval or Installation thereof, such 

aerv1ce or eQuipment ls deemed to be covered by the 

original contract. except that such Item or additional 

sen·lce or equipment so Installed Is subJect to the 

appropriate minimum contract term In accordance 

w1th the company's regulations governln&" Initial contract 

periods. and to the tarl1f charges. Any change 

In the Company's rates shall etrect the alteration ot 

ell contracts so as to render such contracts in conformity 

therewith. and such alteration shall take etrect 

without notice. The subscriber shall not assign his 

contract with the Company nor any rights thereunder. 

ADVANCE PAYMENTS 

At the time or application for service, the 

aPplicant will be required to pay the proper service 

connection charges, together with an advance payment 

equal to one month's charges for exchange service, 

equipment, mileage, listings, etc. 

Notwithstanding the preceding paragraph, and In 

addition to the advance payment therein provided. 

an applicant or subscriber. whose credit standing Is 

not established to the Company's satisfaction, may be 

required to make a further advance payment of an 

amount which the Company considers sulflclent to 

cover not more than six months' charges for exchange 

service. toll service, equipment. mileage, listings, and 

all other services and c!larges for which the Company 

Is entitled to receive payment. Charges for service 

rendered are appUed against such advance payment. 

If. In the opinion of the Company, the subscriber's net 

credit balance Is at any time lnsumclent to cover the 

e~timated service charges referred to, the Company 

may require a further advance payment or suspend 

a.nd terminate service in accordance with the regulatiOns 

contained In the tariff. 

INSTALLATION OF WIRING 

Except where otherwise provided In the Company's 

taritis or by special agreement, all work of installation 

of wtring and equipment on the applicant's premises 

Is done by the Company, and the Company attaches 

tts instruments. equipment or lines only to wirina: 

Jnstalled by Its own employees. 

TELEPHONE NUMBERS 

The subscriber shall have no property rl&"ht In the 

telephone number assigned to him or an:v right to 

continuance of servtce through any particular central 

omce, and the Compan:v may change the telephone

the called pe•son where he cannot be reached b:r 

telephone, provided the calling person ureea to PU 

the cost of such service.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS 

All ordinary expense of maintenance and repairs 

unless otherwise specified In the subscriber's application 

or In the company's tarltrs. Is borne br the 

Company. Upon termination of service anJ' equipment 

furnished b:r the CompanJ' shall be required to 

be In good condition. reasonable wear and taar 

excepted. In the case ot damage to or destruction or 

any such equipment. not due to ordinary wear and 

tear, the subscriber, on demand. shall pa:r to the 

Company the cost of replaclnc the equipment or ot 

restoring It to Its original condition. The subscriber 

shall not rearrange, disconnect or remove. or permit 

others to rearrana:e. disconnect or remove, or otherwise 

Interfere with any apparatus or wlrln&" Installed 

by the Company, except with the written conaent of 

the Company. 

The CompanJ' reserves the right to enter Into 

agreements with railroad companies or other partlel 

whereby they may be required to Install and malntaiD 

telephones and telephone apparatus furnished bJ' the 

ColllP&DJ'. when such talephonea and apparatua are 

located on the railroad premlaea or In other placea 

lnvolvln&" unwoual hasard.l, or when It Is convealent te

EXCHANGE AND MILEAGE AREAS

VIOLATION OF COMPANY REGULATIONS 

In the event of default on the part of the subscriber 

tn making payment of any sum due the Company. 

including connecttn1r companies' charges, or fn compiJina 

with the rules and reaulations of the ComparrJ 

which govern the services rendered, the Company maY, 

without notice. suspend the services which it furnishes 

under any or all service contracts with the subscriber 

without termin a ting such service contracts, until all 

sums d ue h a ve been paid and aU violations have 

ceased or been remedied; or may terminate any or 

all service contracts with the subscriber either without 

or following suspension ot service. Such action 

by the CompanY shall not atiect the subscr iber's 

liability for the payment or all charges owing to t he 

Company. 

EMERGENCY SERVICE 

In exchanges where continuous service is n ot pr o 

vided. emergency calls may be placed durin g other 

than the nor mal office hours, but a charge of 25c per 

call ma y be made for tbis service. 

INITIAL CONTRACT PERIODS 

GENERAL 

The initial con tr act :Period for all services and 

facilities furnished by the Company shall be one

PRIVATE BRANCH EXCHANGE SYSTEMS

"hen additional switchboard positions are 

installed in connection with multiple private 

hranr·h exchanges or when additional equip 

Jnent. such as switches, switch frames or 

power apparatus, which entail large installation 

costs, are installed in connection with 

automatic private branch exch ange s:rstem$, 

'uch additional e(juiprnent is installed subject 

to an initial contract period of from three to 

five years. 

The in itial contract period for hotel 

private branch exchange systems shall be 

rlelermined b y t h e Company in ea.cl1 case.

SPECIAL NON -STANDARD EQUIPMENT

USE OF SUBSCRIBER SERVICE 

Subscriber telephone service, as dtstinguJshed f rom 

public. semi-public and hotel telephone service. sha!l 

be furnished only for communications as follows : 

In t h e case of busin ess service, by the subscriber. 

the agents and representath•es of the subscriber 

and permanent guests or tenants residing tn a 

club or lodgin g house. 

In t h e case of residence ser vice. by the subscriber 

and m embers of bi~ domestic establishmen 

t. 

T he use of the service may, with t he Company's 

Perm.lssion . be extended to joint users and to persons 

temporarily subleasing the subscriber's restdentlal 

:Premises. 

A t locations where, tn accordance with the Con1 .. 

pan y's definitions of business and residence sen•tce. 

business rates should apply but resldeilce rates are 

being charged, the Company ffiRY thenceforth charge 

the business rate applicable without the execution ot

T he Companv may refuse to furnish subscriber 

service on premises of a public or seml-publlo 

character when the telephone in::;trument is or wou.ld 

be located so that the public might make use of the 

service. 

The use of the Comps.ny•s service for nnnoylng 

other Persons or Impersonating 1\nY Individual, and the 

use of offensh·e language wh11e using or conversing 

over the Company's faciJittes shall not be permitted. 

The Company may terminate tne servic'e or any 

subscriber who commns any breach o! this regulation 

or who permits any person to use the t.elephoue or 

service furnished such subscriber contrary to thls 

regulation. 

USE OF PART'!' -LINE SERVICE 

The Company may Umlt con\·ersattons on party 

Unes to five minutes when longer C(\UYer ss tton~ inter·

It Is a condition of party-line sen·lce that the subscriber

NON-APPROVED DEVICES 

The subscriber shall not use or permit to be used 

any electrical or mecbnnlcal apparatus or device to 

connection wJth the equiPment or facilities furnished 

by the Company without the written consent of the 

Company. or permit the attachment of ad,'t"rtts.Jn~t 

dev1ces thereto. Il any n.pparatus or dt'l"icf'-3 o! any
