The Vision Began Here
F
or six decades, Texas Southern University (TSU) has prepared
students for success in an ever-challenging, increasingly complex
world. One of the most comprehensive of the Historically Black
Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), TSU educates in a wide area of
professional fields. Realizing the importance of international issues and
global competitiveness, TSU recently commissioned a major university
international initiative.
The University’s new international emphasis is complemented by its location in Houston, Texas, the fourth largest
city in the U.S. It has gained a preeminent position as the nation’s center for energy – and as its leading port in
international tonnage.
Recognizing this international focus, TSU’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business (JHJ) was one of the first Schools
on campus to plan a major international program.
The Jesse H. Jones School of Business (JHJ) at TSU is dedicated to providing a
quality education for employment in a globally diverse job market. Fully accredited by the
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the school’s curricula for years
included international business content. Recent initiatives have added a number of
courses dedicated to global competitiveness.
In 2003 JHJ began plans to develop a Global Commerce Center focusing on African
Trade to prepare students for more effective involvement in the global economy, to provide regional businesses
with international business training, and to assist affiliated African Universities in entrepreneurial training.
The Mickey Leland Center was established in 1989 to address issues affecting World Hunger and
Peace.
The Leland Center exists to continue Mickey’s legacy by providing leadership development and
training and by expanding opportunities for students to conduct research, analyze public policy, experience our city,
state and nations’ legislative process first-hand, and participate in international studies and projects.
The Leland Center also serves as a conduit for University faculty to interact and interface with the community to
create collaborative programs and forums that seek solutions to enduring critical problems concerning hunger,
diversity, conflict resolution, reconciliation, and peace.
The Center collaborates with The JHJ Global Commerce Center on such programs as Trade Missions, Studyabroad
groups, and African trade conferences.
