Complex Biological Systems Any function performed by a system that is not the result of a single part in the system, but rather is the result of interacting parts in the system, is an emergent property. Systems that have emergent properties are said to be irreducible. A system is said to be complex if its emergent properties are unpredictable ??. Living ‚systems‘ are complex systems. The recognition that complex systems, especially life, are truly <strong>und</strong>erstood from knowledge of the interactions of their component parts is f<strong>und</strong>amental to Systems Biology. However, the identification and analysis of system‘s parts is an important aspect of research into complex systems.
