Educating one's Family<br />

Hadhrat Ali !&lGW's Interpretation of the verse:<br />

"Save yourselves and your families from the Fire"<br />

Allaah says in the Qur'aan:<br />

"... Save yourselves and your families from the Fire ..." {Surah Tahreem, verse 6)<br />

In his commentary of the above verse, Hadhrat Ali ~,!&@!%5 said, "Educate<br />

yourselves and your families in all that is good." ('1<br />

Another narration quotes Hadhrat Ali !B!SG%'s interpretation as, "Teach them<br />

(your families) and educate them in good etiquette (manners)." (2)<br />

Rasulullaah Instructs People to Teach and<br />

Educate their Families<br />

Hadhrat Maalik bin Huwayrith !.@&%j reports, "We were a few youngsters of<br />

similar ages when we came to Rasulullaah @@ and stayed with him for twenty<br />

days. When Rasulullaah @%% sensed that we were yearning for home, he asked<br />

us about our families and we told him about them. Rasulullaah was<br />

extremely compassionate and merciful so he said to us, 'You may return home.<br />

You should however teach your families (the Deen you have learnt), instruct<br />

them (to fulfil the requisites of Deen) and perform your salaah as you have seen<br />

me performing salaah. When the time for salaah arrives, one of you should call<br />

out the Adhaan and the eldest amongst you should lead the ~alaah"(~)<br />

Learning the Language of the Enemy and<br />

of Others for Sake of Deen<br />

Rasulullaah Instructs Hadhrat Zaid ~,&@.%+ to<br />

Learn the Jewish Language<br />

Hadhrat Zaid bin Thaabit %!dGWj says, 'When Rasulullaah just arrived in<br />

Madinah and I was brought before him, the people said, '0 Rasulullaah @%%!<br />

This boy from the Banu Najjaar tribe has already learnt seventeen of the Surahs<br />

that have been revealed to you.' When I then recited to Rasulullaah w, he was<br />

very impressed and said, '0 Zaid! Would you learn how to write the Jewish<br />

language because I swear by Allaah, I do not trust them to write for me.' I started<br />

learning the language and it was barely half a month later that I had mastered<br />

it. I was therefore Rasulullaah @%IS scribe when he wrote to the Jews and I<br />

would read to him the letters they wrote to him." (4)<br />
