2.1 continued 2.1.5 tutors and trainers are registered with
the Institute for Learning
(www.ifl.ac.uk), have a Diploma in
Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
(DTLLS) or its equivalent as defined in
the new teaching reforms.
2.1.6 tutors and trainers have skills knowledge
and understanding of English and
mathematics up to Level 3 and are
qualified to teach literacy, language
and numeracy (ESOL) skills as detailed
in the minimum core of teachers’
knowledge, understanding and
personal skills as defined by Lifelong
Learning UK (LLUK) at Level 4 or Level 5
for each subject area they teach (see
www.lluk.org).
2.1.7 tutors and trainers are engaged in a
programme of continuing professional
development as detailed in the
Institute for Learning (IFL) requirements.
2.2 use initial assessment to provide an
accurate basis on which to plan an
appropriate programme of work.
2.2.1 participants undertake a comprehensive
initial assessment that focuses on their
previous work and learning experience in
addition to establishing their competence
in literacy, language and numeracy for the
employment area they want to work in.
2.2.2 initial screening and diagnostic
assessment tools are used to identify
accurately literacy, language and
numeracy needs in the context of the
participants’ main learning goal or their
goals relating to finding employment.
Initial assessment contributes to the
participants’ individual action plans.
