2.1 continued 2.1.5 tutors and trainers are registered with<br />

the Institute <strong>for</strong> Learning<br />

(www.ifl.ac.uk), have a Diploma in<br />

Teaching in the <strong>Life</strong>long Learning Sector<br />

(DTLLS) or its equivalent as defined in<br />

the new teaching re<strong>for</strong>ms.<br />

2.1.6 tutors and trainers have skills knowledge<br />

and understanding of English and<br />

mathematics up to Level 3 and are<br />

qualified to teach literacy, language<br />

and numeracy (ESOL) skills as detailed<br />

in the minimum core of teachers’<br />

knowledge, understanding and<br />

personal skills as defined by <strong>Life</strong>long<br />

Learning UK (LLUK) at Level 4 or Level 5<br />

<strong>for</strong> each subject area they teach (see<br />

www.lluk.org).<br />

2.1.7 tutors and trainers are engaged in a<br />

programme of continuing professional<br />

development as detailed in the<br />

Institute <strong>for</strong> Learning (IFL) requirements.<br />

2.2 use initial assessment to provide an<br />

accurate basis on which to plan an<br />

appropriate programme of work.<br />

2.2.1 participants undertake a comprehensive<br />

initial assessment that focuses on their<br />

previous work and learning experience in<br />

addition to establishing their competence<br />

in literacy, language and numeracy <strong>for</strong> the<br />

employment area they want to work in.<br />

2.2.2 initial screening and diagnostic<br />

assessment tools are used to identify<br />

accurately literacy, language and<br />

numeracy needs in the context of the<br />

participants’ main learning goal or their<br />

goals relating to finding employment.<br />

Initial assessment contributes to the<br />

participants’ individual action plans.<br />
