The restructuring option that Lenoir County Public Schools and E.B. Frink faculty selected for E.B. Frink Middle School is the Focused Intervention Model (developed by LCPS) which reconstitutes the school into smaller, autonomous learning communities. Our Focused Intervention Model spans over the six key elemental components for effective restructuring initiatives, including: • Scientific, research based intervention curriculum programming for reading and math • Instructional provisions for core and supplementary aids and materials • Concise and prescriptive data management systems for all students in Reading and Math to assess, benchmark, and progress monitor individual student performance • High quality professional development for all math and reading content teachers in scientific, research-based instructional methodologies. • Establish a school-based instructional Student Success Team to support teachers with students that have identified curriculum and behavioral weaknesses. • Sustained LEA support personnel to assist with curriculum implementation, data collection systems, data analysis, and curriculum delivery aligned to individualized student need. E. B. Frink Middle School will restructure and implement the focused Intervention Model as its primary instructional delivery model. All Students that score a mid-level III or below on the North Carolina End –of-Grade Test were given placement tests for the scientific, research-based intervention curriculum series, SRA Reading and SRA Math prior to the end of the 2009-2010 school year. Students that score one or more grade levels below their current placement in reading or math will be homogeneously grouped to receive either or both SRA Reading and SRA Math intervention programs in addition to their grade appropriate North Carolina Standard Course of Study curriculum. These students will benchmarked and progress monitored consistently throughout the program in order to ensure that students progress as quickly, yet as comprehensively as possible to bring them up to grade level proficiency. Teachers will be trained in data collection systems that allow them to develop instructional practices for each student. Teachers will maintain class data collection series, as well as individual student portfolios to show progression of skills. Teachers will receive high quality professional development, initial, and refresher training in both SRA Reading and SRA Math prior to the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. We welcome your involvement at E.B Frink Middle School. There are many ways to participate, including becoming a member of the Parent Teacher Organization, offering your input to the School Improvement Team, volunteering, and attending parent conferences with your child’s teacher(s), making sure that your child is prepared and attends school each day, and monitoring your child’s homework. E.B. Frink Middle School will have its annual meeting to develop our parent involvement policy and to review parent rights under Title I and other information on October 6, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. and again at 6:00 p.m. (in case the first meeting time is not convenient for you). The Title I district-wide parent involvement policy will be reviewed this fall and you may want to be a part of that review process. Receive Free Tutoring Services at E.B. Frink Middle School The free tutoring program for students who receive free or reduced-price lunch will be offered two days per week after school by a provider chosen by you from a list of approved providers. Only students who receive free or reduced-price lunch are eligible for free tutoring. If your child receives free or reduced-price lunch, you will be notified early in the school year by separate letter of an upcoming parent meeting to provide information and answer questions that you may have about the free tutoring services.
