Connecting with Canadians
SASKATOON - Surveys show 80
percent of Canadians say they are
“something” (as in, “I’m Lutheran”),
yet only 20 percent of them can
be found in church on any given
Sunday. Hence the question: What’s
up with that?
Almost fifty people gathered
at Faith Lutheran Church for an
interactive workshop/seminar
entitled What’s Up With That?,
sponsored by Central District’s
Saskatoon Circuit, Saturday,
February 24.
Presentations dealt with diverse
subjects such as bringing the Good
News of God’s love to postmodern
people; what people mean by the
word “spirituality” today; how people
see faith and life interacting; and
understanding that presenting the
incarnate Christ to the world through
Word and Sacrament ministry being
the place we begin as we proclaim
Christ and Him crucified to all
generations.
Presenters included Pastors James
Dimitroff (Grace, Saskatoon) and
Rudy Pastucha (Faith, Saskatoon).
Pastor Dimitroff spoke about The
Last Christian Generation and ways
in which we can be challenged to
bring them the Good News. The
intersection of our Canadian culture
in the early 21 st century with the
Good News of God’s love, and our
WINNIPEG - Grandparents Day, held February 28 at
Beautiful Savior Lutheran School (BSLS) was a huge
success for the students and their grandparents.
After the chapel service, the grandparents
circulated around the classes and spent time with
each of their grandchildren. The morning ended with
a short tea party.
Thanks go to Pastor Fritsche for organizing the
event, Ms. Woods and the grades 5-8 band students
for performing and to the teachers and parents for
setting up the refreshments.
need to adopt missionary “eyes” as
we proclaim Christ to a Canadian
culture of “affiliates” were conveyed
by Pastor Pastucha through two
presentations.
Highlighting the day were brief
presentations from several lay
people who shared with the large
group their service involvement
in local congregations and beyond:
J u l i e T wo rd i c k ( I n t e g ra t e d
Participants came from LCC
congregations across the Saskatoon
region and were encouraged to have
lunch with someone they didn’t
know. Attendees later reported that
this was an important aspect of the
seminar.
At the end of the afternoon, the
participants met in two small group
sessions. The first, organized by areas
of service in their congregation, was
to share ideas about what is working
and to encourage each other about
the things that are challenging. The
second small group session gathered
people from the same congregation
to share what they learned during
the seminar and to come up with
at least three ideas they would
commit to further discussion and
implementation within 90 days.
Much good fellowship, discussion
and relationship building occurred
throughout the circuit. Plans are
underway to gather again in the fall
and to have congregations share with
each other what they have learned,
discussed and implemented since the
workshop.
Hands trace congregation’s history
CHURCHBRIDGE, Sask. - To
commemorate their congregation’s
60 th anniversary in 2006, the Sunday
school children of Trinity prepared
a quilted wall hanging which is now
displayed in the parish hall.
Each child stamped their hand
print on fabric squares which
member Wanda Kitz skillfully
sewed together. Many of the family
names on the quilt reflect ancestors
from the individual congregations
which combined to form Trinity
Camp program goes green
PASQUA LAKE,
Sask. – In its 75 th year
of ministry, Camp
Lutherland on the
north shore of Pasqua
Lake has chosen Take
Care Out There as this
year’s theme. With
the environment so
much in the news
and on our minds,
campers will look
at the green issues
before them and learn
how to become more
responsible caregivers
of the good earth
God has given as our
temporal home.
Youth Camp, for ages 11-13, meets
July 15-19; Kid’s Camp, for ages 8-10,
follows from July 22-26. Another
summer CREW Ministries team will
lead singing and help make the camp
Ponderings
from the president
new experience for me since
A becoming a district president
has been interviewing then hiring someone for a staff
position. As I write, I am preparing to go through this
process for the fourth time.
The last time I interviewed people I thought of
those times at school or while playing street hockey
when two individuals (usually the best at the sport)
were chosen to be the captains. They then took turns
choosing their team from the available players. While
my memory conveniently fails me, I don’t think I was
ever the last chosen, but usually I was drafted near the
last. One time I thought, “I’ll play so well that he will
regret choosing me among the last. I’ll show him!”
And then those times when I was chosen early I felt
under a lot of pressure not to let my teammates down.
My youthful uncertainty kept asking the question:
“Was I really that good that he would choose me
above the others?”
When interviewing people, it can be difficult to
choose the “right” individual for the job. Some have
truly special and memorable.
Please encourage the youth in
your church, your children and
grandchildren to attend this Christian
camp. The summer season provides
a unique opportunity to make new
friends, to learn and
grow in faith and
in God’s Word, all
in the wonderful
setting of God’s great
outdoors.
excellent computer skills or are good with numbers.
Others are well organized or are hard workers. Still
others have pleasant personalities, or they would be
willing go the extra mile to make the organization look
good. Often I would like to combine the personality
of one person with the skills of another to build the
“perfect” candidate.
But there is no perfect candidate. Even God knows
that, for when He chooses He looks at the heart and
not the outward abilities or potential. He sees only sin
in our heart, but continues to love us. Scripture tells
us that He chose us in Christ before the foundation of
the world (Ephesians 1:4). We may not understand
why He chose us—as weak and sinful as we are—but
He fashions us into His creation: “We are the clay, and
You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand”
(Isaiah 64:8). He uses what is foolish and weak to
shame the wise and the strong (1 Corinthians 1:27).
By His gracious choosing, what a joy to be on
God’s team!
was the guest speaker when four
circuits in southern Saskatchewan
held a joint Circuit Convocation
Saturday, March 24, at Mt. Olive
Lutheran Church.
The fifty people who attended
were enthralled by his energetic
presentation The New Testament
Riddle: The Book of Hebrews. Some
mentioned that the information
was “way above my head” but
the president’s engaging teaching
kept everyone on the edge of their
seats and made the morning and
afternoon sessions something not to
be missed.
