Meet the Broward County School Board Members

Letter From the Superintendent of Schools 

The Broward County Public School system is facing unprecedented reductions in the classroom due to state budget 

reductions. Broward schools face millions of dollars in cuts resulting in a close examination and review of all district and 

school based programs. From our first budget workshop through our public hearing process, the School Board of 

Broward County has stood steadfast in their support of the arts, specifically the Student Enrichment in the Arts (SEAS) 

program. The School Board of Broward County is committed to educate the total child. The arts are a critical component 

of our educational programming, kindergarten through twelfth grade. Through the SEAS program, students become 

appreciators and producers of the arts. SEAS is a national model and the leading arts in education program in the nation. 

The School Board of Broward County is proud to continue its investment in students by continuing the SEAS program. 

The SEAS program was formed through a collaboration between Broward County Public Schools 

and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in March 1990. Through this partnership, the school 

system has exclusive use of the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater during the day throughout the 

school year. The SEAS program offers a visual style of learning by integrating arts such as music, 

dance and drama into the students’ education. 

More than 125,000 students are transported each school year to the Broward Center to attend 

SEAS programs. What makes the SEAS program truly unique is our commitment to provide artistic 

opportunities to all students free of charge. Regardless of socio-economic standing, the SEAS 

program is available to all schools, teachers and students. This ensures that all students have 

the opportunity to become appreciators and producers of the arts. 

The Broward County Public School system and Broward Center for the Performing Arts continue to be on the 

cutting edge of education. To complement SEAS, the Reading Residency program was designed to improve reading and 

verbal understanding for economically disadvantaged students. All Title I second and fourth grade students read either 

Stone Soup (grade 2) or Charlotte’s Web (grade 4) and attend a performance of the same titled book at the Broward 

Center. The Reading Residency program focuses on story sequencing, plot development and inferences. Study guides 

aligned with these three areas are designed to make connections for students between the performances and the 

book. Last school year approximately 20,000 Title I students participated in the Reading Residency programs. 

The Broward County Public School system is further committed to assist students in developing their artistic talent in 

post-secondary institutions. The Arts for the Future Scholarship Fund is a community-wide initiative to promote artistic 

career opportunities for graduating high school seniors. Over the past ten years, more than $515,000 in scholarships 

have been awarded to students pursuing education in the arts. Arts for the Future is the largest scholarship program 

devoted to the arts in the state of Florida. 

This year’s season of high quality shows covers a wide spectrum including history and diversity, which are targeted 

to improve reading and literacy. We are pleased to kick off our 2009-2010 season with the national tour of 

Sesame Street, which has assisted students in reading, math and life skills for decades.

10 Years of Success 

Supporting Stars of Tomorrow 

The Arts for the Future Scholarship Fund celebrated its ten year 

anniversary this year by awarding scholarships to 58 talented 

seniors from 28 Broward County high schools. 

Founded in 1999 by the School Board of Broward County, 

Sharon Brooks, Director of Education at the Broward Center, 

and public relations executive Elaine Azen-Lampl, this communitywide 

initiative was created to provide funding for gifted and 

deserving high school seniors who wish to continue their 

studies in the performing, visual and technical arts. 

Since its inception, the Arts for the Future Scholarship Fund has 

grown into the largest scholarship program of its kind in Florida, 

with over 500 scholarships granted to students to date. 

The milestone tenth anniversary celebration featured a number 

of special events including a performance of The Nutcracker 

performed by the Miami City Ballet, a Valentine’s Day Tea at the 

Riverside Hotel, and a shipboard luncheon hosted by the Holland 

America Line aboard the ms Maasdam. Ten Arts For the Future 

Community Leadership recipients were recognized as 

long-time supporters of the program, and guests were treated 

to performances by several scholarship awardees.

giving so many students with potential the final push they need to make it.”

Dear Educators, 

I am delighted to welcome you and your students to another exciting season of educational programs and 

performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. As many of you know, busloads of students 

arrive here nearly every school day as part of the SEAS program, an award-winning educational partnership 

with Broward County Public Schools. As we enter our 19th season, we hope that you will find once again 

that the offerings of the SEAS program will give your students unique learning opportunities that enrich 

and enhance their experiences in the classroom. 

Literature-based shows. Science and math productions. Dramatizations 

of key historical events. An immersion into the music, dance and traditions 

of different cultures. Our SEAS program offers vibrant shows covering 

themes that reinforce classroom learning, directly aligned with FCAT topics 

and the core curriculum. You’ll find that reading-based performances are 

highlighted throughout the year, as the SEAS program brings literature 

to life on stage. 

Each year, we also offer a wide variety of professional development 

opportunities for educators designed to complement and reinforce teaching 

techniques, including Cultural Adventures for Teachers, Workshops-to-Go, 

Discover Broadway, SEAS Plus and Teachers’ Lounge. We hope you’ll 

take advantage of these engaging workshops and master classes. 

In May 2009, the SEAS partnership was recognized by the Broward Alliance with its prestigious “Educational 

Excellence Builds Business Partnership Award” for integrating arts, drama and a visual style of learning into 

our students’ lives and their education. A growing body of research demonstrates that learning through the arts 

helps our students to achieve at higher levels, giving them valuable skills to succeed, from creativity and improved 

literacy to higher levels of motivation and enhanced cognitive development. Whether learning science concepts 

or multi-cultural traditions, SEAS performances help to make learning fun. Connecting the arts to academic 

lessons is a proven strategy that helps close the achievement gap and bring learning to life, advancing our 

shared goal to “educate the whole child”. 

As President/CEO of the Broward Center, and as the father of three, I’ve had the opportunity to witness 

firsthand the significant impact of our education programs on our students, teachers and the community. 

In these challenging economic times, I am especially pleased that this partnership continues to flourish. 

We hope you will take advantage of these unique learning tools by making the SEAS program part of your 

lesson plan in the coming year. Together, we will continue to invest in our students as the innovators

Your SEAS Team 

Dear Educator: 

In 1991, the “Student Enrichment in the Arts” (SEAS) program was founded by the School Board of Broward 

County in a unique partnership with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, it has flourished 

into one of the top “Arts-In-Education” programs in the nation. Selected as a member of the John F. Kennedy 

Center: Partners in Education team in Washington D C, the school district is committed to assessing and implementing 

programs that increase engaged learning, and ultimately achieving the goal of educational success for all. 

The SEAS Department is proud to be able to serve and assist you with study guides, 

lesson plans, FCAT topics and classroom curriculum which are aligned with the Sunshine 

State Standards. There is no better way to improve student achievement than by challenging 

students academically through the arts. 

The arts provide educational connections with a touch of style and grace that cannot be 

replicated anywhere else but at the theater. Students have the opportunity to learn about a 

variety of subject matter prior to each show through study guides sent to teachers. All will then 

experience live performances that support the classroom curriculum like no other. More than 

250 performances and workshops are provided each year for students and educators. 

As you look through our 2009-2010 SEAS catalogue, we are confident that you will find 

everything you need for an enriching year of learning through the arts.

DEAR EDUCATOR: 

WELCOME TO OUR EXCITING 19 th SEASON. In 1991, we began the Student 

Enrichment in the Arts (SEAS) program. What a difference those 18 years have made. 

MORE THAN 2 MILLION STUDENTS have attended professional, world-class performances that 

are FREE to all Broward County Public School students K-12, including those with special needs. 

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT’S READING INITIATIVE FOR 2009-2010 will be the focus of SEAS 

programming this year. The performances will integrate Reading, Literature and Language Arts 

with the Florida Sunshine State Standards curriculum connections and the FCAT Reading Topics.

STUDY GUIDES AND RESOURCE MATERIALS are distributed to each teacher prior to 

attending performances with their students. 

EVALUATION FORMS are distributed at each performance. Narratives on how a 

performance was integrated within the classroom curriculum are requested. 

TRANSPORTATION COSTS are partially subsidized by the school district. Schools are 

responsible for 50 percent of transportation costs with the support of their community 

partnerships and parent organizations.

VSA ARTS – BROWARD, THE ANNUAL VERY SPECIAL ARTS FESTIVAL, will again be 

presented by the SEAS program, bringing together students with, and without, disabilities 

to work and learn through the arts. 

BANK OF AMERICA CULTURAL ADVENTURES FOR TEACHERS are bringing new 

levels of teamwork and creativity into the classroom to help use the arts as learning tools 

for student achievement. 

THE ARTS FOR THE FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides scholarships to graduating 

seniors in Broward County Public Schools. Each year over $60,000 is awarded to students who 

will pursue the arts in their post secondary education. 

SEAS READING RESIDENCIES ensures that all Title One second and fourth grade students in 

Broward County Schools will attend performances of selected stories from the district Basal 

Reading Curriculum. The Reading Curriculum Trainers, Reading Resource Specialists and classroom 

teachers at each elementary school will use the performance to improve plot development, 

story sequencing, and inference skills for reading achievement. 

SEAS PLUS, through the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District, will provide expanded opportunities 

for students attending SEAS performances at the Broward Center. Students will have the opportunity 

to visit the cultural sites along the Riverwalk either before or after the SEAS performance. This will 

enable them to spend an entire school day learning through the arts in many different ways.

Florida Sunshine State Standards 

The Sunshine State Standards are high levels of expectations for student achievement in Florida. These standards identify what students should 

know and be able to do after they complete grades PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The subject areas included are language arts, mathematics, 

science, social studies, the arts, health and physical education, and foreign languages. Sunshine State Standards are organized by strands, 

standards and benchmarks. For easy reference, each of these is assigned a unique identification code, e.g. 

LA. A. 1. 1. 1. 

STRAND: a label for a category of knowledge, such as 

reading, writing, measurement or economics.

The 2010 Barber of Seville Student Outreach Initiative utilizes an opera’s plot, characters and storyline to deepen the understanding of academics and 

promote character development. This project involves experiential learning activities that provide students with in-school support from performers 

in FGO’s Young Artist Studio, online resources, and an opportunity to attend a performance at the Broward Center. The In-School Opera 

Program meets Sunshine State Standards for Music in grades 9-12, especially in the areas of (C) Cultural and Historical Connections (the student 

understands music in relation to culture and history), and (D) Aesthetic and Critical Analysis (the student listens to, analyzes, describes and

must accept people as they are, overcome obstacles and celebrate the uniqueness of us all.

SEAS Plus is an educational collaboration between the Broward County Public Schools, the Broward Center 

for the Performing Arts, and offered at the following Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District cultural sites only:

Each cultural site provides school day learning opportunities for students that are aligned with 

Florida’s Sunshine State Standards, FCAT strategies, and the school district’s number one priority, reading. 

IMPORTANT!! SEAS Plus consists of a trip to a SEAS show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts as well as a visit 

to one of the venues listed above which are within walking distance of the Broward Center. All trips must be approved 

through the SEAS office and ONLY the venues listed above may be considered for SEAS Plus trips.

While there is never a charge to attend a SEAS performance, you are responsible for paying for your admission to

Imagine the excitement a young boy would find along Fort Lauderdale’s New 

River at the turn of the last century! Frank Stranahan’s trading post (circa 1901) 

on the northern bank was the hub of activity. While Seminoles gathered on 

the shady porches to trade their otter hides and gator eggs, Frank’s wife, Ivy (the area’s first school teacher), taught the young Seminole 

children to read. Storytelling: Mitchell’s Magical Day with Frank & Ivy Stranahan brings the colorful history of Fort Lauderdale to life for 

young readers through tales of historical fiction. Participants will tour the Stranahan House Museum, have ‘hands on’ experiences and 

will engage in interactive storytelling using the book, Mitchell’s Magical Day with Frank & Ivy Stranahan. Broward County Public Schools 

elementary sites use these books as a supplement to the social studies curriculum; copies of the text were provided to elementary 

schools as a gift from Stranahan House through state and local grants.

Program (Cappies) in 1999. Cappies celebrates high school 

theater and journalism while fostering a greater sense 

of community among schools’ theater programs. 

The South Florida Cappies started in the 2002-2003 school 

year with five schools. Now 27 public and private schools 

from Broward and Palm Beach counties participate, and there 

are three chapters in the State of Florida. Cappies student 

critics attend and review each other's shows, 

which are then submitted to local newspapers.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT 

ART HISTORY: BEST PRACTICES 

Participants will engage in two 3-hour trainings designed for high 

school Advanced Placement Art History teachers. Participants 

will explore strategies to help students succeed in understanding 

knowledge of architecture, sculpture, painting and other art forms 

within diverse historical, ethnic and cultural contexts. They will share 

best practices for examining and critically analyzing in written and 

oral form major forms of artistic expression from the past and 

present from a variety of cultures. 

Participants must attend both sessions and complete follow up 

assignments to be awarded points. Teachers must be teaching or 

aspiring to teach High School Advanced Placement Art History.

Ceramic Techniques will offer participants a variety of basic approaches 

in designing, creating and understanding the ceramic process. Participants 

will explore a variety of tools and ways to work with clay in the art 

classroom. The workshop will include an overview of the different 

types and stages of clay as participants manipulate, form and shape 

the medium. Glazing and kiln firing tips will also be shared in this 

exciting training. 

Participants must have access to ceramic clay and a kiln to implement 

strategies learned in the delivery of instruction. Participants must attend

education specialist from Sawgrass Springs Middle School. This will be a great opportunity for all music teachers to expand their knowledge and 

give themselves the added tools needed to reach more students through music. There will be two parts to this workshop. String instruments will

MaskPower teaches simple methods of constructing half-masks for increasing vocabulary, comprehension and presentation skills. Masks 

become a stimulus for creating stories, poems and short plays and are a fun and easy way for building FCAT skills.

work, food, transportation, etc., of their times, which will serve as springboards to demonstrate how students can read, research, 

write and retell the stories in vignettes, plays and monologues that turn “then” into “now.”

FCATS, yet, unlike taking a test, it becomes a fun, challenging activity that integrates listening, rhyming, speaking, rhythmic and vocabulary

Susan Anderson 

National Board Certified Teacher, 

Early Adolescence through Young Adult Art 

J.P. Taravella High School 

Susan Anderson holds a bachelor of fine arts in education/ 

ceramics from Florida Atlantic University; is a studio art major 

from the School of Visual Arts in New York City; and is board 

certified in Early Adolescence through Young Adult Art with the 

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She has taught 

at J.P. Taravella High School for more than 15 years and has 

worked as a summer instructor with art programs at both the 

Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern 

University and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. 

“I guide students to work through their troubles by producing art. 

I hold a fundamental belief in the education of the whole child,” says 

Anderson, who holds professional memberships from Florida Arts 

Educators Association; Broward County Teacher’s Guild; National 

Arts Educator’s Association; Broward Art Guild; Broward Art 

Educator Association and Palm Beach Photographic Society. She has 

promoted and instituted many innovative activities and projects at 

J.P. Taravella High School including, Pinwheels for Peace, Think Art, 

and Shared Inspirations, just to name a few. Anderson says, 

“opening minds to new information and ideas, while opening 

hearts to creative expression is one of my major goals.”

THE EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY 

DEVELOPMENT (ECD) GRANT PROGRAM 

A grant program of up to $30,000 awarded annually to cities, 

organizations and artists to implement after-school and summer 

arts education projects throughout Broward County. 

ARTS EDUCATION ONLINE DIRECTORY 

This directory is a resource for the community listing information about 

teaching artists that provide outreach arts services in Broward County. 

FAMILY ARTS AND RIDE GUIDE 

This partnership publication between Broward Cultural Division and 

the Office of Transportation is a comprehensive listing of organizations 

that offer arts programming for families, listed by name, location, phone 

number and website. A full-scale map is also available that has bus 

fares plotted and major thoroughfares, as well as cultural facilities 

that offer family arts programming. 

ARTS TEACHER OF THE YEAR PROGRAM 

Each year, one outstanding arts educator is honored at a gala award 

ceremony and performance at the Broward Center for the Performing 

Arts. This program was created in 1985 to publicly recognize the role 

of arts teachers in Broward County schools and is funded by the 

Cultural Foundation of Broward. 

ANNUAL ARTS INTEGRATION PROGRAM 

This program is a multi-collaborative conference of the Broward 

Cultural Division, Dillard Center for the Arts, The School Board of 

Broward County, FL, Broward Center for the Performing Arts and 

the Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education Program. Each year more 

than seventeen arts integration workshops are presented to artists, 

classroom teachers, principals, and community arts providers. 

The presenters are highly-skilled, nationally-recognized arts integration 

experts from Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ roster, along 

with local teaching artists and university faculty. Studying with them in 

this “master class” format is a rare opportunity for Broward teachers.

tenth annual “Stars on Parade” was presented

ARTS FOR THE FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP FUND 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION 

On March 13, 2009, the Holland America Line hosted a “Celebration Luncheon” on board the ms Maasdam benefiting 

the Arts for the Future Scholarship fund. The scholarship program – the largest of its kind in Florida - has awarded scholarships 

to over 700 deserving high school seniors who have pursued the arts in college over the past ten years. At the luncheon, 

nine previously selected lifetime achievement and corporate community award winners came together to be recognized 

for their continued support of the program, including Rose Miniaci, a founding benefactor of the scholarship fund.
