for Canadian Studies in the UK through its Sustained Studies in Contemporary Canadian Issues fund. The project on “Theoris[ing] Multiculturalism and Social Cohesion in Canada and the UK: Lessons for Policy Implementation and Civic Engagement” has involved four SPRI staff (Hodgett, O’Connor, Aughey and Acheson). To this end Dr Susan Hodgett is working with Dr David Clark (LSE and Manchester) to develop a research methodology in the area of multiculturalism, immigration and human development within Canada. Within the last academic year they have spoken on immigrant well-being at the Universities of York, Surrey and the New School, New York City. Professor Sile O’Connor has contributed to this multiculturalism project through her research on Precarious Employment: Comparative Perspectives with Professor Leah Vosko, York University, Canada on a comparison of developments in eleven countries. This team of researchers’ is comparing perspectives on precarious employment while seeking to develop common understandings across space, scale and social location. Professor O’Connor has also been busy reviewing key Canadian multiculturalism policy and submissions to the Bouchard-Taylor Commission in Quebec as part of an analysis of the policy relevant to Ireland north and south. Professor Arthur Aughey has been using the project to explore UK policy on Multiculturalism and influences from the Canadian policy experience. His study traces the references within that debate to the Canadian experience on multiculturalism. At the same time Dr Nick Acheson is working on an examination of the role of the Voluntary Sector in Ireland and Canada with colleagues from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. Both Acheson and Hodgett published with the University of Ottawa in their widely circulated public sector management journal Optimum Online this year. Other SPRI members continue to pursue their research on Canada. For example, Professor Bob Osborne (& Professor Carol Agocs University of Western Ontario) have papers in progress on Employment Equity and Equality in a comparative context in Canada and Northern Ireland. While Dr Roger Austin, in the School of Education, has been researching the use of ICT within Canadian education and is interested in its uses in diverse societies with Professor Bill Hunter, University of Ontario, Institute of Education. In the last academic year we have arranged several Canadian Studies events open to students, staff and the general public. In September 2007, the annual conference of the Public Administration Committee of the Joint University Council UK was hosted and organized by the SPRI in conjunction with the School of Policy Studies at University of Ulster. Speakers included Mr Eddie Goldenberg, former senior policy advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada. An influential conference was held in May 08 supported by SPRI, the Community Relations Council NI and the Province of Ontario on Managing Diversity and Respecting Our Differences: Contributions from Canada and Ireland. Speakers included Professor Will Kymlicka (Queens University Kingston), Ms Joan Andrew, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, Ontario and Robert Orr, Minister (Immigration), Canadian High Commission, London. Local speakers included Duncan Morrow, Chief Executive, Community Relations Council Northern Ireland and Philip Watt, Director of the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism, Dublin. Anna Lo, MLA and Patrick Yu, Executive Director, Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities also addressed this event. Diversity within education was the subject of Professor Bill Hunter’s seminar to the institute on education structures in Newfoundland. While Alan Trench, Edinburgh University, contributed to our Canadian seminars by outlining how federal Government actually operates in Canadian intergovernmental relations. In February, a colloquium was held with Queen’s University Belfast to discuss Governance, Administration and Democracy in Canada. Speakers for this event included Professors David Johnson and Andrew Malloy from Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia and Professor Ivan Townshend (University of Lethbridge). For a second year, our work with the Eccles Centre at the British Library has continued and its Director Professor Philip Davies contributed to our Canadian Studies Seminar Series last year. Also worthy of note in 2008, Ulster Director of Canadian Studies, Dr. Susan Hodgett, took over the role as President of the British Association for Canadian Studies and ex officio a seat on the Board of Directors, of the International Council for Canadian Studies in Ottawa. The highlight of the year however was award of an honorary degree in the July 2008 graduations to the High Commissioner to the UK, Mr James Wright, in recognition of his, and Canada’s, important contribution to the social and economic development of Northern Ireland. 6
