The <strong>Airlift</strong>/<strong>Tanker</strong> <strong>Association</strong> Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen Award<br />
is presented annually to an outstanding Air Transportation (2T2XX)<br />
individual for sustained excellence in aerial port operations.<br />
Master Sergeant Scott G. Winchell<br />
Master Sergeant Scott G. Winchell is a Superintendent, Air<br />
Freight, 62d Aerial Port Squadron, Joint Base Lewis-McChord,<br />
Washington. He holds his Associate in Applied<br />
Science in Transportation Management from the<br />
Community College of the Air Force.<br />
Upon completion of Basic Military Training in<br />
January 1994, Sergeant Winchell began technical<br />
training as an air transportation apprentice,<br />
where he graduated July 1994. He was then assigned<br />
to the 37th <strong>Airlift</strong> Squadron at Ramstein<br />
AB, Germany, after working 4 years between<br />
Aerial Delivery, Air Freight, and the newly established<br />
Contingency Response Group; he was<br />
transferred to the 314th Logistics Readiness<br />
Squadron at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas.<br />
Sergeant Winchell spent the next 2 years in<br />
Aircraft Services coupled with a 4-month deployment<br />
in support of Kosovo operations. Sergeant<br />
Winchell then PCS’d back to Germany, where he<br />
became a 723d Air Mobility Squadron member.<br />
The next 3 years, Sergeant Winchell led Ramp Services and Load<br />
Planning teams through the beginning of 9/11 operations and<br />
the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Three years later he arrived at the 62d<br />
Aerial Port Squadron, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington,<br />
where he has led many sections, RODEO and<br />
ORI teams, and led numerous deployment teams<br />
worldwide.<br />
Sergeant has two children, a daughter Ashlee,<br />
and son Aiden. Master Sergeant Winchell’s community<br />
involvement includes the Air Force Sergeant’s<br />
<strong>Association</strong>, <strong>Airlift</strong> <strong>Tanker</strong> <strong>Association</strong>,<br />
and his local Top 3 professional organization.<br />
Additionally, he is extensively involved with his<br />
children’s elementary school.<br />
Master Sergeant’s Winchell’s prior achievements<br />
include being named the 62d AW SNCO<br />
of the Quarter (2d Quarter 2011), 62 AW Transportation<br />
SNCO of the Year (2011), and AMC’s<br />
Expeditionary Warrior of the Year, 2006 & 2008.<br />
Among his awards are the Bronze Star Medal,<br />
the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force<br />
Commendation Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters,<br />
the Air Force Achievement Medal with 5 oak leaf clusters, and the<br />
Army Achievement Medal.<br />
