Low Visual Signature Luminaire
WARP9 is a new concept in luminaire design – visual stealth. Typical site lighting attempts to
embellish, decorate, or adorn, often beyond the original architectural intent. WARP9 was
conceived and developed with an entirely different directive. WARP9 was designed to disappear
from the site, camouflage itself within its surroundings, and avoid detection from daytime visual
perception. WARP9 is the antithesis of massive, showy, recognizable, and ornamental design,
allowing architecture to remain visually dominant as it was originally intended. WARP9
is a concept that is long overdue, yet one that is light years ahead of its time.
The Complete Design Solution
From Parking Lot to Building • Proper Scale • Coordinated Design
Site/Roadway Zone
Parking lots and roadways require luminaires on
20'-40' poles to efficiently light these large areas.
Therefore, this lighting sets the design style for all
other lighting zones as you progress towards the
building. Select WARP9L large version luminaires
with round poles for this zone.
Pedestrian Zone
As an observer leaves the parking lot and transitions
to pedestrian areas, poles should decrease in height to
10' – 16'. In addition, luminaires should decrease in
scale, as human perception of proportion is keen at
this level. Select WARP9’s small version luminaires for
this zone, and select a finish that will integrate well
with the fixture’s primary background elements.
2 KIM LIGHTING

WARP9 TM
Landscape/Pathway Zone
Near the building, luminaires should continue to
disappear, blending into the landscape and hardscape
elements. Select from a wide range of low voltage, line
voltage, and LED landscape luminaires, or Kim Lighting’s
VRB and GEM bollard series to integrate
with WARP9’s curvilinear form.
Building/Perimeter Zone
Avoid installing pole-mounted luminaires close to the
building, as they tend to dominate the architecture.
However, if required, WARP9 is the best solution to
integrate with architectural proximity. Kim Lighting
suggests WARP9 wall mounted luminaires to reduce
daytime detection of building mounted equipment.
WARP9 TM
A Concealment Approach
WARP9’s efficient and low profile compound curve design results in a close
synergy between aerodynamic performance, illumination performance, and its
ability to limit cross section visibility. When installed with the right scale,
finish and placement, WARP9’s sophisticated and complex camouflage scheme
achieves a unique level of concealment and subtle presence never before
offered in an architectural luminaire.
Product Overview:
Kim Lighting’s WARP9 series offers a complete package of luminaire sizes
and options to integrate seamlessly into any environment, natural or
man-made. Choose from two housing sizes in electronic or magnetic
ballasted versions, and select one of four distinct light distributions and a
wide variety of mounting, fixture, and finish options to complete your
WARP9 visual stealth concept.
Low Visual Signature Technology
DESIGN LOGIC:
The Disappearing Act
Modern technology produced Kim Lighting’s
new WARP9 luminaires, but the camouflage
principles behind it were learned instinctively
from nature thousands of years ago. WARP9’s
fundamental approach is the same as those
used by wildlife and hunters for millennia:
hide, blend, and deceive.
There are two basic elements of camouflage:
shape and color.
WARP9 capitalizes on both of these
principles in unique ways to reduce
perceptual attraction and luminaire detection.
First, WARP9 utilizes a computer generated
low-profile compound curve design to create
a natural compact top arc that reflects the
sky from normal viewing angles. This breaks
up the luminaire’s outline, disrupting its
silhouette and evening out its 3-dimensional
surface, making it more difficult to see as one
object. This reduces visual mass, and allows
the viewer to envision the entire site without
disruptive and massive luminaire shapes to
draw attention away from architecture and
landscape. Second, WARP9 utilizes a hollow
mounting arm that gracefully blends with the
housing, and minimizes its visual signature.
Kim Lighting has also developed a unique
color scheme to further reduce the
luminaire’s visual signature.
VISUAL STEALTH TECHNOLOGY :
New Stealth Gray Finish
Color is essential to camouflage, as its similarity to
the primary background will tend to break up that
area of the outline and blend the shape away from
normal detection. Over 100 painted samples were
tested and reviewed to determine how well they
matched the predominant colors of contemporary
architecture, typical horizons, and northern
hemisphere skies. These were then narrowed down
to a few prototype samples that were field tested
for visual acuity, perception attraction, and detection
reduction. The result is Kim Lighting’s new Stealth
Gray finish option featuring a light gray hue
suitable for any outdoor environment. However,
designers can select from a wide variety of standard
and custom finishes depending on application and
immediate background surface coloration.
AERODYNAMICS:
Small Size • Low EPA
Specify Kim Lighting’s new Stealth Gray finish to
further reduce the fixture’s visual signature.
Featuring a light gray semi-gloss surface, Stealth
Gray is a result of an extensive study of finishes
and paints for typical application scenarios in
natural or architectural environments.
A welcomed result of WARP9’s thin design is a
very low EPA rating, suitable for installation in
almost any environment, including high wind,
coastal, and hurricane prone locations. Kim Lighting
recommends mounting WARP9 luminaires on
round poles to further improve aerodynamics
and lend to the fixture’s camouflaged appearance.
Round poles have less visual signature than
square poles.
WARP9 Small Housing and Arm EPA (WP9SE): 0.52
WARP9 Large Housing and Arm EPA (WP9LE): 0.95
Note: Pole selection and height will also
determine final EPA allowance for your application.
Advanced Performance Features
High Performance • Low Profile
WARP9’s super low profile housing does not
mean a compromise in illumination performance.
In fact, an entire new series of reflector systems
was specifically developed through a highly
detailed computer study of efficiency and lamp
output maximization. These new systems feature
highly specular 95% reflective Alzak finishing,
tooled and assembled by hand at Kim Lighting’s
California facilities to maintain the highest quality
and performance standards. Choose from IES
Type II, III, IV, and V Sq distributions, rotatable for
any application or distribution requirement.
Full Cutoff: StarView Compliant
Kim Lighting's StarView products meet IES
and IDA full cutoff requirements for use where
light pollution or light trespass may be a concern,
and to promote the enjoyment of celestial
visibility at night.
WARP9 utilizes a horizontal lamp orientation
with a flat glass lens to produce full cutoff with
zero light above 90° horizontal. Therefore, all
WARP9 fixtures are StarView compliant and
are approved for full cutoff applications in
any jurisdiction.
WARP9 also offers a house-side shield option
where light trespass and control of spill light
onto adjacent property may be a concern.
Optical Design Features
Advanced Heat Management
WARP9’s die-cast housing is a homogeneous
component in which every feature has a
functional purpose. HID lamps produce significant
heat, yet are operated by temperature sensitive
electrical components. Because of its compact,
low profile size, new methods of controlling heat
were required for WARP9. A combination of
cooling ribs, ventilation, and a solid barrier wall
between the optical chamber and the ballast
compartment are employed to control operating
temperatures for maximum component life.
Rotatable Optics
All WARP9 reflectors are field rotatable in 90°
increments. This allows design flexibility in
producing very high illumination levels for special
applications, or for maintaining a consistent fixture
orientation throughout the site. Each reflector is
labeled to show the orientation of the light
pattern, and can be field adjusted after
initial installation.
For applications requiring high light levels, such as
sports facilities, auto dealerships, or service
stations, reflectors can be aimed in parallel to
double illumination levels.
Unique Frameless Lens
WARP9 employs a unique frameless lens for
several purposes. For improved camouflaging, the
frameless lens lends to the sleek profile and
reduced mass of the housing envelope, also
reducing the amount of geometrical and straight
lines that tend to attract the human eye. Second,
the frameless lens allows for a consistent and
positive gasket seal to completely isolate the
optical chamber from moisture, air, and insect
entry. Finally, fewer component pieces reduce
overall fixture weight and improve allowable EPA.
Installation & Maintenance Features
Easy Installation and Set-Up
No-Tool Maintenance
The attachment of lighting fixtures to poles is often a
neglected detail that ruins a clean design with boxy
armatures and exposed nuts, bolts, or screws. WARP9’s
arm connection naturally integrates and blends with the
fixture head for a clean, strong appearance without
exposed hardware or attachments. WARP9 also utilizes
an internal mounting-bolt system concealed within the
arm, fixture, and pole for maximum rigidity and
assured coupling.
Inside the pole top, a reinforcing plate receives the mounting
bolts. A strain relief is provided on the reinforcing plate
for securing the field wires. The cast-aluminum arm has
concealed mounting bolts accessible through a flush cover
that blends with the arm pre-assembled at Kim Lighting.
The arm is configured to complement the fixture design
and make the fixture-to-pole connection look natural,
logical, and homogeneous.
Ease of maintenance is a feature that distinguishes a
lifetime product from an inferior substitution. WARP9
utilizes modular construction for easy installation and
maintenance, and to allow for upgrading as lamp
technology advances.
To reduce expensive lift-truck rental time, relamping can
be quickly accomplished without tools. A single latch on
the nose of the fixture opens the hinged frameless lens. If
ballast replacement is required, the entire electrical
module is accessed through a separate latched door on
the underside of the fixture, and includes quick-disconnect
plugs on all wiring. A spare electrical module can be
quickly inserted to eliminate downtime, while the old
module can be repaired and stored for future use.
