Rogue Scholar helps children understand math in a new and dynamic way
When Jarrod Goode was in the third grade, he took a field trip to the University
of California at Davis. His teacher and later mentor, Mary Seawright, asked the
class to write a book about their visit. The first line of Jarrod’s book read, “I want
to go to college.”
Now a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Jarrod, his wife Tiffany and
their three children make their home in Murphy. He joined the military to
support his family; after he was discharged, Jarrod worked with his father in
construction. Although he knew he wanted to go to college, Jarrod didn’t want
to start until it became clear exactly what he really wanted to do. When he
realized his passion was for teaching, he knew he was ready to return to school.
When asked about his future, Jarrod does not miss a beat: “I want to be a fifth
grade teacher with a specialty in math.” His determination and enthusiasm are
apparent as he discusses the book he is writing in collaboration with his math
professor, Charlotte Hutt.
Jarrod Goode
“We’re working on a program that integrates learning mathematics with computers and helps children in
kindergarten through sixth grade classes,” Goode says, his eyes lighting up. He loves helping children learn
about a subject that he himself is passionate about. As Jarrod pulls out his computer to explain the math
programs he is working on, you cannot help but become excited about the achievements this man is going to
accomplish for children.
Not only is Jarrod an accomplished student, he is currently working on a capstone project with the National
Association for the Education of Young Children and chartering a student association chapter at RCC. He is
passionate about teaching children and helping them develop confidence in their capabilities.
Goode will be completing his final year at Rogue Community College this spring. He is currently dual
enrolled at RCC and Southern Oregon University, has already been accepted into SOU’s School of Education,
and will continue at RCC to complete his minor in mathematics.
The Rogue Scholarship has allowed Jarrod to focus on school and expand his education to include a foreign
language and math minor. He feels it has opened many doors to him and introduced him to community
members who also have a passion for education. Meeting people who contribute to the success of students
has inspired him. They are the role models for what he would like to become in the future.
2 The Rogue Scholarship is funded entirely by the RCC Foundation Board of Directors.
