A Year for Celebration
Thank you for being such generous partners in contributing your resources to support our students and
programs at Rogue Community College. RCC provided classes and specialized training to over 19,000 students
in southern Oregon this year. Our campuses serve as vital educational centers in Medford, Grants Pass, and
White City.
Celebration was the theme in 2008. A new milestone was reached with the
awarding of over $780,000 in scholarships to deserving and motivated students.
The RCC Foundation rates among the top Oregon community college foundations
in the amount of scholarships awarded to students, and your support has been
instrumental in that rating.
We also celebrated the innovative spirit of our faculty and staff through our project
grants by supporting their dreams to expand and improve programs, services, and
facilities. Your gifts have allowed students and staff to thrive, and our region will
benefit from their success.
The new RCC/SOU Higher Education Center in Medford opened in September
with a wonderful community celebration. This state-of-the-art facility, shared by
students and faculty from both RCC and SOU, is the first of its kind in Oregon. In
addition to representing the visionary partnership of both schools with state and
local governments and business, the center stands for environmental stewardship and
incorporates sustainable green technology.
Barbara Patridge
The success of our students, who, for the fourth consecutive year, have earned the distinction of maintaining
the highest grade-point averages as transfer students in the Oregon University System, is an accomplishment
worth celebrating, and we are so proud of them.
Finally, we celebrate you – our donors – for your partnership with the RCC Foundation. We appreciate having
you as advisors, committee members, scholarship readers, and friends. We are grateful for your continued
support of our educational mission.
With best regards!
Rogue Scholar helps children understand math in a new and dynamic way
When Jarrod Goode was in the third grade, he took a field trip to the University
of California at Davis. His teacher and later mentor, Mary Seawright, asked the
class to write a book about their visit. The first line of Jarrod’s book read, “I want
to go to college.”
Now a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Jarrod, his wife Tiffany and
their three children make their home in Murphy. He joined the military to
support his family; after he was discharged, Jarrod worked with his father in
construction. Although he knew he wanted to go to college, Jarrod didn’t want
to start until it became clear exactly what he really wanted to do. When he
realized his passion was for teaching, he knew he was ready to return to school.
When asked about his future, Jarrod does not miss a beat: “I want to be a fifth
grade teacher with a specialty in math.” His determination and enthusiasm are
apparent as he discusses the book he is writing in collaboration with his math
professor, Charlotte Hutt.
Jarrod Goode
“We’re working on a program that integrates learning mathematics with computers and helps children in
kindergarten through sixth grade classes,” Goode says, his eyes lighting up. He loves helping children learn
about a subject that he himself is passionate about. As Jarrod pulls out his computer to explain the math
programs he is working on, you cannot help but become excited about the achievements this man is going to
accomplish for children.
Not only is Jarrod an accomplished student, he is currently working on a capstone project with the National
Association for the Education of Young Children and chartering a student association chapter at RCC. He is
passionate about teaching children and helping them develop confidence in their capabilities.
Goode will be completing his final year at Rogue Community College this spring. He is currently dual
enrolled at RCC and Southern Oregon University, has already been accepted into SOU’s School of Education,
and will continue at RCC to complete his minor in mathematics.
The Rogue Scholarship has allowed Jarrod to focus on school and expand his education to include a foreign
language and math minor. He feels it has opened many doors to him and introduced him to community
members who also have a passion for education. Meeting people who contribute to the success of students
has inspired him. They are the role models for what he would like to become in the future.
2 The Rogue Scholarship is funded entirely by the RCC Foundation Board of Directors.

I am a single mom of two active boys 12 and 14 years old. I have been raising them entirely on my own for the past 10 years. What a blessing
to have your support! It’s not only the financial support that I appreciate, but it is also the fact that you saw something in me that led you
to believe that I will be successful. So thank you again for supporting me, my family, and our community.
– Lisa Taboada,
Carpenter Foundation Scholarship Recipient

Daniel Stephens
In 1999 Daniel Stephens was a happily married father of two boys and had been
promoted to senior engineer with a cellular phone company. Soon afterward,
however, his life began to change drastically into a downward spiral. Seven years later
he was alone, homeless, and addicted to drugs.
Dan, sober now for two years, is currently completing his associate’s degree in general
studies at RCC. He intends to transfer to Wayland Baptist University where he will
pursue a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Engineering with a specialization in Electronics
Systems Engineering and a minor in Management.
As a graduate of RCC’s Moving On program for students in transition, Dan now
volunteers his time as a math mentor. He credits “Moving On” not only for providing
the turning point in his life that helped him through the early stages of recovery, but
also for reinforcing the importance of his returning to school at a time when he wasn’t
sure if he could handle it emotionally.
“Magic happens in Moving On,” he said. Now Dan loves watching and helping others
bloom in the program the way he did.
His plans are big, but when you talk to him it becomes clear that he will accomplish whatever goals he sets
his mind to reach. Living in his car when he began at RCC, Dan is now a proud member of the Phi Theta
Kappa Honor Society, on track to complete his associate’s and bachelor’s degrees by fall of 2009, and he no
longer lives in his car but in an apartment.
“Receiving a scholarship removed so much of the stress of attending school,” he said. His loan amounts have
decreased, and the subsidized loans were eliminated almost entirely. Dan expresses appreciation for the
help he received from donors who invested in his education and even deeper gratitude for the fact that
others would invest in a person they didn’t know.
“These contributions will ensure families and future generations will enjoy life in this valley and on this
planet,” he added.
Daniel Stephens
As a first generation college student, he is moved by hearing the plans his two sons, now 13 and 15, are
already making for their college careers. Dan feels this is confirmation of what he has learned over the last
year and a half, “that with time and patience, things just keep getting better and better.”
Thanks to generous people and organizations like you, many kids who would otherwise have no means of funding their education now
have a fighting chance.
Electronics Program and the RCC Foundation – David McKeen, Department Head
Supporting Electronics Students
In 2006, after a transition from Redwood Campus in Grants Pass to Table Rock Campus in White City, a
sudden decline in enrollment threatened the existence of the RCC Electronics program. Due to the drastic
decrease, the AAS Electronics degree was scheduled to be cut entirely. However, through the support of
the RCC Foundation, the Electronics program is not only thriving now, but the foundation has made it
possible for the program to meet the needs of increasing numbers of students. This year the RCC
Electronics program will serve more students than ever before.
Through the support of the RCC Foundation, the majority of electronics students are working on their
degrees with the assistance of scholarships. Nearly every request by the department has resulted in
financial support, making it possible for students to focus more on their educational goals and avoiding
tuition increases. Additionally, the foundation has identified significant funding which has supported the
high school dual enrollment program, which enables students from local high schools to train at RCC,
earning credits toward their AAS degree before even receiving their high school diploma.
In year two of an important partnership, the RCC Foundation and the Morris Family Foundation are
currently supporting 48 dual enrolled high school students as they complete their first term in the
Electronics program. Additionally, 12 students have returned to RCC after completing the program last
year and are now, as freshmen, enrolled in second-year AAS Electronics courses already nearing degree
completion. Recently Liz Sweeney, whose son is in his second year of the program said, “I am very pleased
with the program Ryan is in. He has shown a lot of enthusiasm for what he is learning and his future that he
did not have before. Another great experience for Ryan has been learning algebra. In high school…he felt
it was useless to try. At RCC he was able to make sense out of it because he was no longer solving for an
unknown…it made sense to him in a new way. “
Renewable Energy Grant
This year the Electronics program was awarded a $10,000 project grant by the RCC Foundation to help
implement a new alternative energy strand. This two-part project will purchase new equipment, enabling
the department to offer a new alternative energy course to RCC students in 2009-10 and will build a solar
powered renewable energy system, both designed and built by program students.
The new course, Introduction to Renewable Energy Systems, will include topics of solar, hydro, fuel cell,
wind, and the related control and conversion systems. The equipment purchased by the RCC Foundation
will be used to provide experiential hands-on activities using the various sustainable systems while also
reinforcing math and science concepts tied to each experiment and project. This state-of-the-art program
will serve several populations: community members interested in alternative energy resources and systems;
current learners in the various program areas interested in learning about the various renewable energies
and control/conversion systems; and targeted workforce training for employees who need to upgrade skills
to include renewable energy resources and systems.
The second portion of the foundation grant dollars will provide the resources for students to create a solar
display system, which uses solar energy to charge deep-cycle batteries. Converters will use the stored
battery power to completely supply power to several workstations at the TRC-174 electronics lab. These
‘green’ stations, which will be entirely off the grid, will continue to be used and maintained by AAS
electronics students.
The college has plans to build on these sustainable technologies, which the RCC Foundation has helped to
create. Within the next several years, Rogue Community College hopes to offer a certificate and/or AAS
degree program in renewable energy.
During economic difficulties, the RCC Foundation has been there for our students with scholarship dollars, and facility dollars to help our
students’ learning environment be the best that it can be. The Art Department has benefited in Medford with the remodel of a room that
makes so much difference to our students. Most recently, we were able to retrofit a building on the Redwood Campus to improve our
workspace for our sculpture and jewelry classes. We can’t thank the foundation enough for being there for our students.
