News & Notes
by Lynn Thaxton,
Executive Director
I learned early on that one of the best
coping mechanism for me, personally, to be
able to deal with the stressors of the day is
laughter. The busier and more ridiculous my
day becomes, the more I try to find ways to
laugh at my situation. Laughter has never let
me down in my life. It always picks me up
and makes me feel better. The other fantastic
thing about laughter is that it is absolutely
free and everyone knows how to do it.
Sunday, May 6th, is World Laughter
Day. It was founded by Dr. Kataria in
Wellness Corner
by
Janice Weissing,
RN
At first, when a mate passes, there is a
firestorm of paperwork and activities that
keep a person occupied and family and
friends are usually around with a myriad of
activities. Then things quiet down and
people typically involve themselves in things
that were neglected such as replacing light
bulbs, cleaning drawers, and doing
household and car maintenance. At last,
some feel vulnerable and adrift. This is when
it helps to talk to a friend or therapist.
In a book called “Healthy Living at 100”
by John Robbins, there is a large section
devoted to relationships and the importance
of others in our lives. The “me generation”
that touts self absorption is not working so
well for people. In a study on heart disease
in men, the first-person pronouns “I,” “me,”
“mine” and “my things” were associated with
severe heart disease and severe heart attacks.
The book advises: “Listen when others talk,
let others have their way, do things for
people even when it does not directly
benefit you.” Robbins also recommends that
side of life this month. Check out our
ever happened to you. Your story could earn
Social Connections are Life Savers to
Seniors Who Want to Live Happier Lives
Bringing your friends closer has never
been easier and more rewarding! With our
Send-A-Friend Program, both you and your
friends can find more of what you need here
at Five Star Premier Residences of Boca Raton.
If you are a current resident or a resident’s
family member, just submit the name of someone
you feel would benefit from senior living
it may be time to get out of yourself and to
promote a greater cause. For example,
worthy goals might include contributing time
to Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, Veterans
causes, museums or other organizations.
Also, trying to connect more personally to
others by listening when they are ill, have
loved ones who are ill or problems with
children. This tends to make a person feel
connected to life. Some people almost
become self-appointed counselors or
ambassadors in a community of independent
living. Some are liaisons for religious services
and some choose to provide more artistic
assistance by arranging flowers. It would be
beneficial if everyone from artists, readers,
story tellers, religious persons, veterans,
gardeners would all find a way to share and
enrich the community with their talents.
The days of families living together or
close knit multi-generational lifestyles are
sadly gone and with it there is an impending
loneliness that can be a fatal disease. DO
