From the Supervisor
“Things do not change; we change.”
– Henry David Thoreau
Unless, of course, you are
referring to the Chili Town
Newsletter. Over the past
two years, what was once the
Recreation/ Senior Center brochure
has evolved into a Town Newsletter.
Our newsletter now includes news
and events from the Library, Highway,
our Historian and so much more.
With all these changes, it’s time for
a makeover. I am pleased to present
a new look to our town newsletter.
I hope you will take the time to
look inside to see the programs
and services provided by the Town
of Chili. I strive
to provide our
residents with
as much information as I can, so if
there is something you would like
to see included in our newsletter,
please contact me at ddunning@
townofchili.org or 585.889.6111.
I am humbled to have the pleasure
of serving as your Town Supervisor,
and look forward to serving you -- the
residents of the Town of Chili.
Sincerely,
Supervisor Dunning

Re-name the
Park Contest
The Town of Chili is giving all Chili residents the chance to leave a mark on the community
which will last for years to come. As part of the ongoing park improvement project at “Baker
Park,” the Town Board decided it was now time to give the park a proper name.
Some Background First
“Baker Park” was purchased by the Town of Chili
in 1989 from the Baker family for the purpose of
a creating a town park. Over the years the park
has been used for many things, including scout
camping, the Recreation Department’s haunted
hayrides and the Boy Scout’s Haunted Barn, but
most notably the park became home to the Chili
Disc Golf course. The Chili Disc Golf course is considered
by many people to be one of the finest
courses in New York State and has hosted many
tournaments including the 1999 World Disc Golf Championships.
The park has recently seen the completion of Phase I
of an improvement project which includes a new picnic shelter,
restroom facility, and a new parking area. With the help of
County Executive Maggie Brooks and Supervisor David Dunning,
the Town of Chili was able to secure a grant for $145,000
to complete Phase II which will include amenities such as hiking
trails and a butterfly garden.
Why Re-name the Park?
When the Town of Chili purchased the property from the Baker
family, the land was never formally dedicated a park by the
Entry Form
Town Board, or even named for that matter. Over
the years the property has been called everything
from “Baker Property”, “Baker Farm Park”, “Chili
Disc Golf Course Park”, and most recently “Baker
Park”. With Phase I of the improvement project
completed and Phase II slated to begin work in
early 2010, Supervisor Dunning and the Town
Board felt it was the perfect time to rename the
park and formally dedicate it as such.
How the Contest Will Work
Chili residents of all ages are invited to submit names for the
park along with a detailed explanation including any historical
or significant reasons for the park name. A committee
will review all entries and then narrow the list to the top three
names. The three selected names will then be presented to
the Chili Town Board for final approval. The person who submits
the winning park name will receive the Grand Prize, which
is TBD. If more than one person submits the winning park
name, a random drawing of the duplicate entries will determine
the Grand Prize winner. Upon completion of Phase II of
the improvement project, the park’s new name will be unveiled
at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
Instructions:
All completed entries must be
returned by March 5 to:
information as the form.
Mailboxes
The Highway Department
asks that residents keep
their mailboxes in good condition
throughout the year.
Mailboxes that are neglected
will surely be affected by
our plows due to the heavy
snow from our wing plows.
Our drivers take extra measures
to avoid mailboxes,
but sometimes weather conditions
restrict the driver’s
ability to avoid them. If your
mailbox is damaged during
snow removal, a post/stake
and a standard size metal
mailbox are the only replacements,
regardless of what
you had previously installed.
The highway crew will repair
any mailbox they damage, to
necessarily a new mailbox.
From the Historian’s Perch
Early
Roads in
Chili
(and what we
first called
them)
Bonnie Moore
Chili Historian
Town Historian
Do you know what early
route in Chili was originally
called “Sawmill Road”?
You can probably guess that it
lead to a sawmill, but where.
Today, thousands travel that
road every day and it may
have some of the heaviest
traffic in town. It cuts across
Chili in an east-west direction
from Rochester through
Riga. The early settlers in
1800 called this Indian trail
Sawmill Road because it led
to Samuel Baldwin’s thriving
lumber business. Today
we call it Chili Avenue.
There was also a well-traveled
Indian trail that they
called “Path to Big Water”.
It made its way from south
Chili northward to Lake Ontario.
It provided a direct
route to great fishing expeditions
for the natives.
Settlers, however, changed
the name to Braddock’s
Bay Road and it retained
that name throughout the
1800s. Today that road is
quite busy with ramps feeding
from the 490 Expressway.
We now call it by a less
colorful name-Union Street.
No one in early Chili would
mistake what route was
called the River Road. The
trail would meander on the
west side of the Genesee
River which would regularly
challenge the path with its
raging flooding in the
spring. The path would
disappear from time to
time as the angry water
claimed the land around
it. Peter Jr and Jacob
Sheffer attempted to survey
and construct a road
that could be used by
horses and wagons. (Their
father was the first landowner
in Chili.)Many generations
that followed also
tried to tame the wrath of
the Genesee with little success,
that is, until the construction
of the Mt. Morris
Dam. Today we call this scenic
route Scottsville Road.
Stage Road was the name
of a branch in 1805 in Chili
Center that left Chili Avenue
(then known as Rochester
Road) and traveled
south where the present
ball fields are. From there
it found its way past Beaver
Road, snaking its path
to Stottle Road. Today we
call it Chili-Scottsville Road.
Why it claimed itself as
a stage road when so
many other routes carried
stages, we don’t know.
Another early road moniker
was Sand Hill Road. If we
mentioned that along this
path was a cemetery, a Presbyterian
Church, a school and
the southern dogleg leading
to Chili Avenue and the northern
part of Stottle Road, you
would guess Chestnut Ridge
Road. You would be correct.
Another very early route was
Paul Road. It was so named
for the Paul brothers, Lemuel
and Zebulon. They built
their homestead in 1811
at the eastern end, well
before the railroad tracks.
The Pauls were farmers
from Massachusetts and
businessmen. Lemuel
had hoped to tap into the
business trade when the
canal came through Chili.
Yes, indeed, there was a
canal here that joined the
Genesee Canal on its way to
Pennsylvania. Next newsletter,
we’ll tackle that subject.
Many thanks to Sue Fuhrman
who lives presently in the
Paul house for her extensive
information on the Paul family
and the homestead.
SPORT SAFETY WORKSHOP
Each year more than five million children visit
Most of these injuries are preventable.
Developed in partnership with the U.S. Olympic
SPORTS SAFETY FOUNDATION, INC. (NYSSF),
Sports Related Concussion Seminar
for Youth Coaches. Teachers
and Parents
Research on sports-related concussions has
significantly increased in past years as a
growing number of professional and amateur
athletes have left sports due to head concussions.
Traditional concussion assessment
techniques such as asking athletes “Where
are you?” or “How many fingers am I holding
up?” no longer are deemed comprehensive
enough to diagnose a concussion or make
sound decisions regarding an athlete’s return
to competition.
The Brain Injury Association of New York
State (BIANYS) and the Town of Chili will host
a free sports concussion management seminar
geared toward teachers and youth sports
coaches, but the information presented is
also useful for parents and teachers as well.
Call 889-4680 to pre-register.
Topics will include:
• Prevalence of concussions in athletics
• Symptoms related to acute and post-concussion
syndromes
• Mechanics of a concussion
• Risk of second impact syndrome
• Traditional vs. contemporary concussion
management and return-to-play guidelines
• Off-field effects of sports concussions
• Introduction of the ImPACT concussion assessment
tool
Wii
Wii was designed as an innovative, next generation
video game. The Nintendo Wii has garnered
an unexpected audience. Many seniors
who were active in sports when they were
younger have been forced into a more sedentary
lifestyle after developing hip pain, shoulder
pain, and knee pain. The limited mobility
that comes with arthritis pain forced them to
give up athletics and become spectators. Now,
seniors are lining up at senior community centers
to play and compete against each other
on the Nintendo Wii sports games. The Chili
Seniors have a Wii, we use it on a large screen
TV and we want you to come and join the fun!
Check the calendar at the center to see when
you can come in and play! Get your friends together
for a little friendly competition!
Healthy
Eating on
the Run:
20 Tips
From the American
Dietetic Association
Senior Center
Many people are looking for fast, easy and good-tasting foods
to fit a busy lifestyle. Whether it’s carry-out, food court, office
cafeteria or sit-down restaurant, there are smart choices
everywhere. Here are 20 tips to help you eat healthy when
eating out.
Think ahead and plan
1where you will eat. Consider
what meal options are
available. Look for restaurants
or carry-out with a wide range
of menu items.
2Take time to look over the
menu and make careful
selections. Some restaurants
may have a special section for
“healthier” choices.
3Read restaurant menus
carefully for clues to fat
and calorie content. Menu
terms that can mean less fat
and calories: baked, braised,
broiled, grilled, poached, roasted,
steamed.
4Menu terms that can mean
more fat and calories: batter-fried,
pan-fried, buttered,
creamed, crispy, breaded.
Choose these foods only occasionally
and in small portions.
5Order the regular or childsize
portions. Mega-sized
servings are probably more
than you need. For a lighter
meal, order an appetizer in
place of a main course.
6It’s OK to make special
requests, just keep them
simple. For example, ask for a
baked potato or side salad in
place of French fries.
7Hunger can drive you to eat
too much bread before your
meal arrives. Hold the bread or
chips until your meal is served.
Out of sight, our of mind.
8Think about your good
choices for the entire day. If
you’re planning a special restaurant
meal in the evening,
have a light breakfast and
lunch.
9Limit the amount of alcohol
you drink. No more
than one drink for women and
two for men. Alcohol tends to
increase your appetite and
provides calories without any
nutrients.
Tempted by sweet,
10creamy desserts? Order
one dessert with enough forks
for everyone at the table to
have a bite.
Split your order. Share
11an extra large sandwich
or main course with a friend
or take half home for another
meal.
Boost the nutrition in all
12types of sandwiches by
adding tomato, lettuce, peppers
or other vegetables.
A baked potato offers
13more fiber, fewer calories
and less fat than fries if
you skip the sour cream and
butter. Top your potato with
broccoli and a sprinkle of
cheese or salsa.
At the sandwich shop,
14choose lean beef, ham,
turkey or chicken on whole
grain bread. Ask for mustard,
ketchup, salsa or low-fat
spreads. And don’t forget the
veggies.
Try a smoothie made
15with juice, fruit and yogurt
for a light lunch or snack.
Enjoy ethnic food such
16as Chinese stir-fry, vegetable-stuffed
pits or Mexican
fajitas. Go easy on the sour
cream, cheese and guacamole.
At the salad bar, pile on
17the dark leafy greens,
carrots, peppers and other
fresh vegetables. Lighten up
on the mayonnaise-based salad
dressings. Enjoy fresh fruit
as your dessert.
Eat your lower calorie
18food first. Soup or salad
Soup or salad is a good choice.
Follow up with a light main
course.
Ask for sauces, dress-
and toppings to be 19ings
served “on the side.” Then you
control how much you eat.
Pass up all-you-can-eat
20specials, buffets, and
salad bars if you tend to eat
too much.
The Big Read is coming to
town January and February!
This year’s Big Read
book is The Call of the Wild
by Jack London. The story
is about Buck, a dog that
is kidnapped from his easy
life in sunny California and
shipped to the gold fields of
the Yukon Territory during the
Klondike Gold Rush of the
late 1800s. Buck learns a
civilized dog may not survive
in this harsh environment
and he discovers his true
wild nature. The Big Read is
an initiative of the National
Endowment for the Arts, designed
to restore reading to
the center of American culture.
It provides citizens with
the opportunity to read and
discuss a single book within
their communities. Our hope
is that you join us and take
part in the Big Read programs
offered by the library.
Read the book and share
your thoughts with us, your
