2008 San Diego Nominations G O L D A N D S I L V E R C I R C L E Announcing San Diego Gold and Silver Circle Honorees Bonita Golf Club 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2008 This year’s San Diego Gold and Silver Circle will be held on Saturday, August 2nd at the Bonita Golf Club, 5540 Sweetwater Road, Bonita, CA 91920. The Gold Circle honors individuals who began their careers in television at least 50 years ago and the Silver Circle at least 25 years ago, either in a performing, creative, technical or administrative role within the industry or in an area related to television such as TV journalism education, advertising, promotion, and public relations. The inductees must also have made a significant contribution to Pacific Southwest television for at least part of their career. Only current residents of the Pacific Southwest region are eligible. Candidates are selected for evaluation and selection by a special Gold and Silver Circle Committee. 2008 San Diego Inductees G O L D A N D S I L V E R C I R C L E John Coleman Gold Circle Inductee John Coleman is an American news weathercaster. He founded The Weather Channel (but is no longer affiliated with it), and presently works as an on-camera weathercaster at KUSI in San Diego. Coleman started his career at WCIA in Champaign, Illinois, doing the early evening weathercast and a local bandstand show called At The Hop while he was a student at University of Illinois. After receiving his degree in 1957, he became the weather anchor for WCIA’s sister station WMBD in Peoria, Illinois. Coleman was also a weather anchor for KETV in Omaha, WISN in Milwaukee, WBBM and WLS in Chicago. At WLS, Coleman was teamed with Fahey Flynn, Joel Daly and Bill Frink to form the Eyewitness News Team, creating a news brand name and establishing a highly successful new local news format dubbed “happy talk” by a local television columnist. This style of local news has been widely copied. The team dominated Chicago television news ratings for more than a decade. During his time at Chicago’s WLS, Coleman was one of Chicago’s most popular weathercasters, famous for his amusing and irreverent style. It was then that Coleman became the original weathercaster on what was then the brand-new ABC network morning program, Good Morning America. He stayed seven years with this top-rated program anchored by David Hartman and Joan Lunden. He then founded The Weather Channel, serving as its CEO and President during the startup and its first year of operation. After being forced out at TWC, Coleman became weather anchor at WCBS in New York and then at WMAQ in Chicago, before moving to Southern California to join the independent television station, KUSI in San Diego, in what Coleman fondly calls, “his retirement job”. Coleman was born in 1934 in Alpine, Texas, the fifth child of a college professor and his math teacher wife, Claude and Hazel Coleman. He is married to Linda Coleman, and lives in a retirement community in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Bernardo. Robert D. Gardner Gold Circle Inductee WWW.NATASPSW.ORG Robert D. Gardner started in TV with XETV-6 in 1957 and at San Diego State as a Physics Major. XETV started a news program with Lionel Van Deerlin and a staff of five. The B&W news film and scripts were smuggled into Mexico every day for broadcast. Gardner was hired by KFMB-Ch 8 and was the only photographer for the 11pm news in 1959. During his 17 years at KFMB, he was a news photographer, broadcast engineer, documentary producer, and director of the commercial production department. At age 24, he was the youngest Director of Photography of a full CBS Network Television show, Zoorama. JFK spoke at his commencement from SDSU in 1963. At KFMB he filmed many dramatic news stories, including the only person to shoot the Blue Angel crashing at Miramar in 1978. In 1979, Gardner formed an advertising agency, Gardner & Assoc., Inc. and went on to garner 30 Emmys in seven different categories. Bob is a charter member of NATAS and the Silver Circle and has been on the Board of Governors for over 35 years. He has served as President, Alternate Trustee and National Trustee. Gardner received many awards, including the only person to receive the prestigious NATAS San Diego Award for Outstanding Achievement in 1978. Others include the AP Award for Best News Film of 1978 and Third Place in the world in the Nikon International Photo Contest. His work has ranged from skydiving, to underwater, to flying with the Blue Angeles. He has been partial to restoring and racing old British race cars. He has also won awards for his red wines, made with a small group of friends. Bob is very involved in the community. He has worked with Father Joe from his early days, and is a member of the Founding Board of Directors of the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park, and a former Board member of Bayside Settlement House. He has had his own Video production company, Gardner Productions for over 30 years.
