SOCIAL SIDE OF INTEGRATED MEDIA
Consumers are becoming increasingly techsavvy
and knowledgeable about products as
more information is shared online. Marketers
face the daunting task of engaging and
capturing the attention of these consumers
in an overcrowded world of advertisements
and campaigns. How are marketers changing
their strategies to keep up with these trends?
And, in particular, how is social media
affecting a marketer’s approach to integrated
communications? Is this the solution
marketers have been dreaming of? Matt
Eaton, group editor of Marketing magazine,
sat down with some of Hong Kong’s top
marketers to find out.
This Marketing Roundtable was
sponsored by Waggener Edstrom
Matt Eaton, Marketing: I’ll start the
discussion with a broad question. We have to
deal with such a massive collection of media
now, especially online, where it’s diversifying
and fragmenting. What does integrated media
mean to you and your brand?
Rose Yeung, 7-Eleven: In the old days, it
was much simpler. We had three major pillars
– TV commercials, press and radio. Today
marketing has become more complicated.
Julie Jackson, The Langham: The hospitality
industry is more traditional in the way it is
structured because we tend to work in silos.
The lines of responsibility are also blurred.
Does integrated media come under marketing
communications or e-business? We also need
to have people in operations involved because
they interact with clients and have the power
to change things.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: With so many
different teams involved in the new process,
are they all empowered to use social media
tools?
Michael Hobson, Mandarin Oriental Hotel:
We’ve written a set of rules in terms of how we
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
Rose Yeung, 7-Eleven:
Julie Jackson,
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
Michael Hobson
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
manage our social media around the group. I
think keeping consistency across all time
zones across the world, with a disparate group
of people, is something one has to manage
carefully.
David Ko, Waggener Edstrom: Your digital
content is like radio waves in the air, available to
all, and listeners tune into a specific frequency
that resonates with them. So content is king.
It’s all about how you tailor it to capture the
demographic you want to reach.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: I think it’s interesting
to hear from industries such as fashion and
hospitality. But is social media limited to a
particular industry? Does it work best for one
industry? Bonnie, would LG launch something
first on social media before taking it into the
traditional media space?
Bonnie Chan, LG Electronics: In our field,
social media is becoming very important.
Most of our customers look for comments
and discussions before they make purchases.
So we’re treating it as a loyalty building
programme. We have so many products
launched each month and whenever we have
new products, we will feed news to customers.
At the same time, we feed them industry news,
so they will follow us consistently. We’re only
at the first stage of social media, hence we rely
more on agencies.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Jane, do you have
anything to share from the tourism side of the
industry?
Jane Fong, VisitBritain: We have to try to
push the image of a country, however, often
we can’t control the image. For example,
Groupon sold a trip to London last week, and
we have to monitor the response, and see how
it is projecting London’s image. Managing this
volume of interaction is a challenge. People
actually use Facebook to ask about the
weather in Britain and if they should bring an
umbrella. You can imagine other Facebook
users might want to chip in.
Danny Yeung, Groupon: There are many
types of responses to the same questions,
and it can be positive or negative.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Joseph, you guys
do a lot of event marketing. How do you
prioritise your spend across the marketing
Bonnie Chan, LG Electronics:
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Jane,
Jane Fong,
Danny Yeung, Groupon:
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Joseph,
Joseph Chang,
mix, especially with social media being such a
new item in marketing budgets?
Joseph Chang, Moët Hennessey Diageo:
In our case, we only had to shift the budgets
a little because many of the events and
digital campaigns are actually below-the-line
campaigns, and they’re all related. In terms of
Facebook-building, it’s all about the content.
We have a wide range of products, but you
can’t talk about the product all the time. So
the challenge is to build the content. We’re
working with a dedicated digital media agency
on a retainer basis to maintain the content for
us, and to build on our PR events as well.
Winnie Lai, Waggener Edstrom: I think on
Facebook, the conversation is often one way,
with the company telling the audience what
they have to sell – and that is not audience
engagement. With social media, it’s all about
the content, the audience we’re talking to and
the relevance to them. So what I really liked
with Visit Britain is that people were asking
about the weather. That means people trust
and like your brand to ask you these things.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Angelina, how
is social media affecting your loyalty
programmes?
Angelina Wong, Virgin Atlantic Airways:
We see our loyalty members tend to group
together to form and share within a community.
They talk about their experiences, how they
redeem miles and what their experiences are
like. When we promoted New South Wales,
we found a group of people who like self-drive
tours on travel portals. We decided to use these
travel portals to build more information about
it. Over time, we found self-drive travellers do
visit the site to share experiences, and they
are able to leave their content with us. People
warmed up to this in a slower way, but I’d say
it’s a higher yield customer for us.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: The other thing we
haven’t talked about is demographics. What
does demographics mean to you in social
media?
Adrian Toy, Puma: I think demographics
reach back into the idea of social media in the
retail experience, rather than the advertising
experience. Through customer engagement,
we know who our loyal and non-loyal
customers are. We can also identify if there is
a luxury demographic. I think the idea of what
a demographic is needs to change because
it’s more about their purchasing purpose than
their age or gender.
Paul Cadman, Ferragamo: Most people who
buy luxury goods in HK are mainland Chinese
consumers who are not yet exposed to all
types and forms of social media. We are hiring
Chinese language staff in our retail stores in
Paris, London and Rome, but the amount of
travellers who are travelling over there have
not and will not connect to Facebook, unless
they have a mobile device. Hence, they’re still
in the traditional media phase. Furthermore,
the internet sites they can access are still
really slow and not really integrated with social
media CRM data.
Facebook
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Angelina,
Angelina Wong,
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
Adrian Toy,
Paul Cadman, Ferragamo:
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Rose,
Rose Yeung, 7-Eleven:
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
Dirk Dalichau, Miramar Group:
Facebook。
MARKETING EVENTS
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Rose, how are you
integrating digital media with social media?
Rose Yeung, 7-Eleven: When we use digital
media and social media, we try to blend in
what’s on our minds and current happenings
in our stores. Hence, there will be a lot of
conversations on corporate promotions and
redemptions and we will try to engage people
in those conversations.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: So what does it
take to engage someone who is everywhere
all the time?
Dirk Dalichau, Miramar Group: We often
forget that social media is not just Facebook.
It’s TripAdvisor, discussion forums, expat
forums. I think a Facebook campaign only
works when it takes on a life of its own. You
have to create a community that buys into your
idea and brand, and you use that opportunity
to interact with them.
Michael Hobson, Mandarin Oriental Hotel:
We have something new every week. How are
you supposed to maintain presence in all these
platforms? You can’t, you just have to choose
one. The hardest thing isn’t keeping tabs on
the technology, it’s the focus. Consumers
move as well, so the biggest challenge is
really, the consumer.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: There’s no single
metric and if you put money all over the place,
how do you tell people what to look for, and
what you want?
David Ko, Waggener Edstrom: The
outcomes that clients define as success
metrics vary from campaign to campaign. We
probably have five or six different software
tools that measure the outcome and ROIs of
marketing campaigns in different ways. They
are specific configurations for each client, and
that’s the reality of the situation today.
Michael Hobson, Mandarin Oriental Hotel:
There are certain things we can measure, and
some we can’t. We can measure Facebook
fans and Twitter followers as well as the return
of that particular site, but of course there are
some issues. We just try to manage it as well
as we can.
Matt Eaton, Marketing: So where are things
going from here?
David Ko, Waggener Edstrom: We are
thinking a lot about mobile devices as a
social media platform. We think about device
specificity, in the delivery of that content.
That’s where the industry is going, at least for
the next year.
Adrian Toy, Puma: I guess for us in retail,
there’s just so much technology. We are
getting close to the point where we can start
measuring from the moment a customer steps
into the store, whether or not the customer is
male or female. And then we can trace the
steps the customer takes, and measure the
time a customer picks up a shoe, puts it down
and the kind of shoe the customer picks up
next. Everything can be measured. We have
too much data!
Matt Eaton, Marketing: It’s clear media
integration is a very important area and I wish
you luck in all your business ventures moving
forward. Thanks to everyone for taking the
time to be here, and thanks to Waggener
Edstrom for hosting this session.
Michael Hobson,
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
Michael Hobson,
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
Matt Eaton, Marketing: Groupon
Adrian Toy, Puma:
Matt Eaton, Marketing:
