1. Foreword by the Pro Vice Chancellor
(Research and Innovation)
I am delighted to welcome readers to our annual reports
from University of Ulster Research Institutes. We have
had an excellent year marked by great achievements in
recruiting superb researchers to academic and research
posts, attracting external income and completing work
that has led to highly prestigious papers, books and
other outputs. There has been a very strong flow of
research findings as new disclosures to our Office of
Innovation. These are being managed as promising
new intellectual property and that Office also ensures
that the expertise of our staff is accessed by external
organisations through consultancy contracts. Overall our Institutes provide high
quality research environments that are strongly supportive of research. Our
achievements point to improved research capacity and capability amongst the
University’s staff – the best possible training environments for our increasing
number of research students. We are very proud of every student who graduates
with a doctoral degree and delighted that our statistics for successful completion
rank very highly in UK national comparisons.
This past year was marked by final preparations for the forthcoming UK Research
Assessment Exercise (RAE). The work to be submitted for RAE has been underway
since 2001, so some of it is detailed in the current Annual Reports. The University
is proud of the quality of its RAE submission and looks forward confidently to the
announcement of outcomes at the end of 2008.
The enhanced research performance of recent years is in line with that planned
for in our Strategy and Action Plan for Research, Research Training and Innovation,
entitled SUPPORTIVe 1 . Developed through comprehensive, university-wide
consultation, SUPPORTIVe articulates our commitment to ensuring that research
at the University of Ulster fully supports our goals summarized as ‘excellence,
innovation and regional engagement’.
I commend this report to you as a demonstration that University of Ulster
research ranks proudly amongst UK institutions; documents, analyses and shapes
the modern Northern Ireland and attracts international recognition and awards.
2. Foreword by the
Research Institute Director
Over the past year, the Research Institute Art and Design has further grown with
the membership of five early career researchers recruited to the University of
Ulster including the first of two RCUK Fellows for the Digital Human project
led by Justin Magee. Three research contracts have been made permanent as
Research Lecturers in Fine Art (Chan, Shipsides) and a Senior Research Fellow in
Textile / Digital Print (Belford) respectively.
Our researchers’ excellence and capacity for innovation has received international
recognition through participation in a number of prestigious exhibitions, amongst
them New Art from Northern Ireland at Katzen Arts Center, and the Made in
Northern Ireland: a dynamic change exposition at the S Dillon Ripley Center,
both in Washington DC in Spring and Summer 2006, as well as at the Regina
Gouger Miller Gallery in Pittsburgh, USA, in January 2007. Art and design works
by individual researchers were successfully displayed in many art institutions
and contexts internationally and in Northern Ireland. Equally important were
the challenging and invigorating interventions in the public domain, in which
researchers have engaged creatively with a range of communities and contexts
to address politics of place, neighbourhood renewal and civil transformation
processes.
Interface: Research in Art, Technologies and Design held a programmed series
of events titled: I confess, that I was there: Art, Archives and Locations, during
November and December 2006. Realised in collaboration with international
researchers these public events produced significant insights into ongoing
research processes facilitated in Interface.
The Research Institute’s strategy, which is encapsulated in the concept of ‘Engaged
Creativity’, received further vital impulses through the award of a number of
significant research grants in the area of fabric innovation and woven concrete,
complemented by project grants in Fine Art.
Continued and new substantial knowledge and technology exchange activities
underpin the Research Institute’s focus on user needs and benefits of its activities
for the creativity, well-being and wealth of society.
A range of high-level conference presentations, and participations in international
trade fairs have provided important showcases for research outputs in Art and
Design. The publication of articles in peer-reviewed journals and of authored and
edited books in the area of History and Theory of the Visual Arts has continued
to grow in scope, quality and impact.
This past year saw the successful hosting of the prestigious international conference
of the Association of Art Historians (12-14 April 2007), entitled ‘Contestations’,

which was attended by more than 300 delegates. This event indicates an important
strand of activities that will continue to grow over the next years with a number
of international gatherings currently in preparation.
The research culture and capacity has been further enhanced by an intake of
11 new PhD students who address issues of place, representation, identity and
value in their projects. Amongst the projects ranges an AHRC Collaborative
Doctoral Award with the Nerve Centre, Derry, the city’s digital hub for young
people. An AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Training Award with the University
of Sunderland and in association with Locus+, the Newcastle-upon-Tyne-based
public art agency, has stimulated and advanced both the research generic and
subject specific provision of training for this group of researchers and beyond.
