Exciting change
at Bishop Noll,
inside and out

Exciting change inside and
out at Noll
The 2009-2010 was a year of new
beginnings for Bishop Noll Institute.
All of the concepts, dreams, and
initiatives that were researched and
put into motion last year are just now
becoming visible. In partnership with
the Board of Limited Jurisdiction and
the incredible faculty and staff, the
Bishop Noll administrative team will
begin to bring the bold new vision and
mission of Bishop Noll to fruition in
2010-2011.
I would like to share with you
some of the successes Bishop Noll
Institute enjoyed in 2009-2010. The
Prep Academy made notable gains
in their ISTEP scores, particularly
in math. With a 13% gain over last
spring’s scores and 22% at Pass+, we are
confident that our 7th and 8th graders
are fully prepared for the rigors of our
high school program. This is why so
many Prep Academy graduates begin
high school taking typically sophomore
level courses, preparing them to
engage in as many college level courses
as possible during their junior and
senior years.
Another great success was the
inception of our ACP program for
our high school students. The ACP
program allows students to take Indiana
University courses at Bishop Noll with
adjunct IU faculty and earn college
credit that is accepted at universities
throughout the country. Students who
complete an ACP course at Bishop
Noll and then attend an IU campus can
also transfer their earned GPA. BNI
students were afforded the opportunity
to take ACP courses for the first time
during the 2009-2010 school year
and earned a total of 144 transferable
college credits. The program continues
this year.
Finally, one of the greatest
achievements last year came from the
graduating class of 2010. Not only
did Bishop Noll see our 10th Lilly
Scholar earn a full 4-year scholarship,
but the class of 2010 earned just over
1.5 million dollars in total college
scholarships. Antonia Collins, BNI’s
first African-American Lilly Scholar,
decided to apply her scholarship to
a Purdue University education. The
class of 2010 also boasted ACT scores
above the national average, and both
the African-American and Hispanic
populations have maintained SAT
scores above the national average for
their demographic groups.
As we embark on another year at
Bishop Noll, energy is high, successes
are already accumulating, and what lies
ahead in 2010-2011 shows amazing
promise! I look forward to being able
to report more exciting growth and
success in the coming year!
Thank you for your continued
interest and support of Bishop Noll
Institute. Bishop Noll is able to
celebrate its successes and look forward
to more growth and opportunities for
our students because of the strength
and support of our alumni, parents,
and friends. We are nothing without
our community!
May peace and God’s grace be with you,
A new look at Noll
2
The new school year at Bishop Noll brings with it
many changes, on the inside and the outside.
When you drive up to the school, you’ll see a beautiful
new entryway. The new entry serves not only to enhance the
look of our school, but also to help ensure the safety of all
who come through our doors.
The angled rooftop of the canopy will help keep the
pavement snow- and ice-free during the winters.
This new canopy creates a very welcoming sight to
everyone. Supporting the canopy are 12 columns made
of brick and decorative stone. Each column carries an
opportunity for alumni to create a lasting legacy on a
dedication plaque. Columns can be dedicated to a particular
graduating class, family, or organization. The donation for a
column dedication is $4,000. The columns are available on
a first come, first served basis. Several of the columns have
already been reserved, so don’t delay. Dedicate your column
today!
The construction of the entryway was made possible
by funds from the Diocese for capital improvements. The
beautification of the columns has been and will continue to
be made possible through donations from alumni and their
families.
Inside the building, the swimming pool has been filled.
Not with water, but with concrete. The pool area will now be
a multi-purpose room available to students, staff, and alumni.

Michael Whelan, Class of 1985, has generously donated the
funds to make this project possible. BNI is grateful for the
support of Michael and his family.
To coincide with the new class schedule, many new
features have been added to the building.
Now, each department has a department center. Each
center is designed for students and teachers to meet for
tutoring, homework help, and project work. Students will
have access to resources and computers in each department
center as well.
During their PRT (Personal Responsibility Time),
students can take advantage of the student commons areas
in the main lobby, the hallway outside the Media Center, and
also in the reading area inside the cafeteria.
These commons areas have been furnished through
generous donations from local retailers as well as BNI
families and alumni. Some of our faculty and students
built and varnished wooden benches and tables during the
summer. Many thanks go out to all who lent a hand with
these exciting renovations.
Faculty members are encouraged by these changes.
“I think the renovations are amazing and I believe it
benefits the BNI community to continue its mission,” says
Ms. Natalie Prkic, BNI alum (’96) and Business teacher.
Students are also excited about all the new happenings
at Noll. According to Nelson ( Josh) Velez, Class of 2012,
3

Inside BNI
(continued from page 3)
“The new furniture is really comfortable and looks good. I like the idea of
PRT time so that I can get homework done here and have more free time at
home with my family.”
So, please stop by soon to take a look at all the new and exciting
improvements taking place. You’ll be certain to be reminded that there’s “no
place like Noll”.
“Hats off ” to the Class of 2010
On June 4, 2010, Bishop Noll Institute became the
scene of a great accomplishment that the honorees had
long awaited. June 4th was graduation day for the Class
of 2010. However, receiving their diplomas did not
simply make them graduates. Their diplomas gave them
a place in the long and illustrious history of Bishop Noll
Institute. They became alumni.
In her address to the graduates, Colleen McCoy-Cejka,
Principal, asked students to remember the importance of
individuality. According to her, this request carried with
it some irony as the Class of 2010 all looked alike in their
caps and gowns. However, the sameness of their apparel
truly belied what was within each and every one of the
graduates.
Among the class of 2010 are leaders - some of whom
lead quietly and purposefully and some of whom lead by
getting out front and taking charge. They were our team
captains, student council officers, club officers, musicians,
actors, writers and editors – true trailblazers. Some of
the graduates have had to endure incredibly difficult and
trying circumstances – some that most adults will never
experience – and yet they remained strong and successful.
This group of graduates was fortunate to count among
its members stand-out non-conformists, young men and
women who are confident in who they are and unafraid to
express themselves.
Academically, the Class of 2010 achieved real
greatness. Some of them are attending Loyola, Marquette,
Purdue, Ball State, and countless other colleges and
universities. As a class, the graduates earned $1,538,200 in
scholarships, far exceeding the goal that was set for them.
Mrs. McCoy-Cejka said to the graduates, “If you
plan to make your way in this world and become what
God made you to be, then get ready to try hard, to fail,
and to find the strength within yourself to get up and try
again. You all have within you the power to do whatever
you choose.” BNI’s top two ranking students are doing
just that. David Mysliwy, Valedictorian, is attending
Marquette University. He is majoring in bio-medical
engineering. Tara Balcerzak, Salutatorian, is attending
Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. She is majoring
in non-profit organization management.
As the newest group of alumni move ahead to make
their marks on the world, BNI extends its most sincere
congratulations and warmest wishes for a bright and
bold future.
Collins receives Lilly
Endowment Community
Scholarship; Tenth for
Bishop Noll
Senior Antonia Collins, ’10, has been granted the
prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. The
scholarship provides full tuition and fees for four years to
any Indiana college or university. Antonia will be attending
Purdue University, West Lafayette, and is Noll’s 10th winner
of this prestigious award.
During her years at Noll, Antonia was involved in Student
Council and Student Ambassadors. She is a member of the
National Honor Society and the National Business Honor
Society. She was also a member of the track and field and
swimming teams. She served on the homecoming and prom
committees and was a member of the Multicultural Club.
“Antonia has accepted her award and accomplishment
with such grace and humility”, said BNI Principal Colleen
McCoy-Cejka. “She deserves the honor, and the entire
administration is extremely proud that Antonia is representing
BNI as our 10th Lilly Scholar.” Congratulations, Antonia!
Murphy
Ahern
Abbasy
Jadernak
Heridia
Schmiedl
Christen Murphy joins the English Department
this year. She received her Bachelor of
Arts in English and a Bachelor of Science in
Secondary Education from Calumet College
of St. Joseph. Christen looks forward to getting
to know the students and families that come
through Noll. So far, Christen shared that Noll
has been unlike any other school she’s taught at
or attended. “It is more community- and family-oriented,
and I am looking forward to being
a part of the BNI family,” Murphy said. Her
hobbies include going to the movies, watching
television, and playing all kinds of board games
with her family.
Christen has lived in Northwest Indiana for
the past two years and is originally from Fort
Wayne where she attended Bishop Dwenger
High School. “You wouldn’t think that there is
much culture difference between the east and
west sides of Indiana, but I’m still getting used
to the aggressive driving and train stops.”
Kelly Ahern also joins our English Department
this year. She received her Bachelor of
Arts in English Education from Illinois State
University. Kelly said she is really excited to get
to know the faculty and students at BNI. “Everyone
has been so wonderful and I am very
happy to be here,” she commented. Her hobbies
include attending White Sox games, cooking,
trying new restaurants, movies, theater,
volleyball, and softball.
Lindsey Abbasy joins BNI as our new resource
teacher and will also assist in our guidance department.
She holds her Bachelor of Arts degree
in Psychology with a minor in Spanish
and is currently working on her Master of Arts
in School Counseling from Concordia University
Chicago and will graduate in May 2011.
Lindsey looks forward to getting to know the
students here at Bishop Noll. “These students
have impressed me already and I hope to get
to know as many of them as possible,” she said.
Lindsey’s hobbies include learning how to
cook (because she’s a newlywed), reading, and
being somewhat addicted to reality TV. Lindsey
has done a bit of traveling throughout
South America, and spends her summers in the
northwoods of Canada, fishing and relaxing.
Mary Jadernak joins the BNI faculty as our
new choir and music teacher. Mary previously
taught at the elementary level and is looking
forward to working with high school students.
She is also looking forward to working on the
fall musical with the BNI Theatre Department.
Her hobbies include, of course, everything
musical. “I have “the best” church choir at St.
Joe’s in Dyer and I also direct the “Noteables,”
the Lake County Extension Chorus,” she said.
Mary has four children and four grandchildren
and enjoys visiting her oldest daughter who
lives in Tucson, AZ.
Javier Heridia joins our Prep Academy team
as our Social Studies teacher. Javier has a Bachelor
of Science degree, and has attended Saint
Joseph’s, Calumet College, Ball State, and University
of Phoenix. Javier will also continue to
assist our high school boys basketball team.
Eric Schmiedl joins our high school Science
Department. Eric has a Bachelor of Science
degree in Zoology from University of Wisconsin
- Madison and a Masters in Secondary
Education from St. Xavier University.
BNI 2010 Golf
Invitational a
“Hole-in-One”
Success
BNI alumni and friends hit the greens again this summer
for the Annual Golf Outing. On July 19, 2010, graduates
took advantage of this opportunity to get together, catch
up, and engage in some friendly competition. The outing,
which took place at Innsbrook Country Club in Merrillville,
Indiana, began with a scramble start and saw 31 foursomes
join in the fun.
The day started with a pre-game lunch buffet as golfers
arrived to reconnect with old friends and to make new ones.
Golfers then began play in a scramble format and ended the
day with a cocktail hour and a delicious dinner.
To keep players on their toes, there was a “Hole in One”
contest on the 9th hole for a prize of $5,000. While there was
no official competition for the most alumni from one graduating
class present, the class of 1959 made a great showing
with 3 foursomes.
BNI is grateful to the 2010 committee members for volunteering
their time and efforts for this year’s outing. Along
A note from the Advancement Office: In an effort to
keep our records current we appreciate any and all
record updates. If there is someone you know that is
part of the Bishop Noll family that has passed away,
we appreciate you letting us know. You can call
Diane Arias at 219.932.9058, ext. 1002 or
e-mail at darias@bishopnoll.org. Thank you!
Already off to a good start!
With the beginning of each school year is the beginning
of the Annual Fund “Warrior Train.” This fund helps to
cover the shortfall between tuition and the cost of educating
each student in class. It covers the costs of school operating
expenses such as utilities and teachers’ salaries. Your support
is needed each year as we educate our student body of 485
students.
This year we have advanced our efforts in the area of
academics and capital improvements. Every dollar that you
contribute goes towards keeping Bishop Noll moving and its
traditions alive. At the time of this publication I am happy
to share that the Class of 1985 held their reunion and gave
our Annual Fund a nice boost with a contribution of $850.
We thank them for their contribution and hope their gift
inspires others to give as well.
Our goal this year is to raise $175,000 toward our operating
costs at Bishop Noll. You can contribute in a number of ways:
• Visit www.bishopnoll.org and click on “Giving to BNI”
• Mail check or credit card pledge in the enclosed envelope
• By phone: Call Matt Chico at 219-932-9058 x. 1005
Thank you in advance for your support!
Become part
of Bishop Noll history
You have an opportunity to become part of history. Over the course of the
last few decades, the canopy has taken some wear and tear. Just this September
we completed a retrofit of the canopy and column area.
To help fund the project, we are offering to Bishop Noll’s most dedicated
alumni and donors the first opportunity to fund a column as part of the project.
This will be on a first-come, first-served basis since there are only twelve
columns in the structure.
Each column has been wrapped in masonry and will have a limestone face
plate that will be engraved with the donors’ choice of up to 30 characters. A
donation of $4,000 will fund one column. Ask family members or classmates to
join you in our effort to make Noll an even more inviting place.
Contact Diane Arias (darias@bishopnoll.org) or Renee Nagdeman
(rnagdeman@bishopnoll.org) to receive more information on how to go about
funding a column. We thank you in advance for your support and look forward
to having all columns sold and engravings made by the time the Class of 2011
walks the stage.
Half of the columns have already been spoken
for...don’t delay!
