NOVIGRAD<br />
According to the 2001 population census the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Novigrad</strong> has 4.002 inhabitants.<br />
It is situated on a peninsula on the northwestern coast <strong>of</strong> Istria. It is 25 kn distant<br />
from the Slovenian border. The area has been populated since antiquity and there<br />
are numerous monuments and archaeological sites both in the city and in its<br />
surroundings testifying to that. Some <strong>of</strong> the most important cultural monuments are<br />
the parish church <strong>of</strong> St. Mary, Maximilian and Pelagius, the basilica <strong>of</strong> St. Pelagius<br />
and the three-nave church <strong>of</strong> St. Agatha. To the north <strong>of</strong> the city, on the peninsula<br />
<strong>of</strong> Krpinjan, are the remnants <strong>of</strong> a great historical estate with the late baroque palace<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Rigo family.
