17 NDAU 2011 Report – Retinopathy of Prematurity Screening
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) overall and by neonatal unit at which screening is expected
Of babies discharged from neonatal care in 2011,(to home or foster care), 12% (7,938/68,693) met
the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH)/Royal College of
Ophthalmologists(RCOphth) criteria for ROP screening (1). There were four possible screening
outcomes including ‘on time’ screening, ‘early’ screening, ‘late’ screening, and ‘no screening date.’
Each was determined as follow:
On time
Early
Late
No screening date
Time of ROP Screening
at least one ROP screening date took place within the RCPCH/RCOphth
screening window, of multiple ROP screening dates within the window of the
same baby then the first ‘on time’ ROP screening date was used for analysis
of that baby
- If a baby was discharged from neonatal care before screening
window began and screening occurred before the window began
then the ROP screening was classified ‘on time
the only ROP screening date recorded was before the screening window
began
the only ROP screening date recorded was after the screening window
closed, or the baby’s first known screening was recorded as happening after
their discharge from neonatal care.
there was no ROP screening date recorded.
Babies that did not feature in this analysis were excluded because they either (i) did not meet the
RCPCH/RCOphth criteria, (ii) were admitted after the RCPCH/RCOphth screening window closed,
or (iii) that died before the RCPCH/RCOphth screening window closed. See table 17a and figures
17a-c for the analysis.
