Above are this years Sports Day winning house - Pendennis, with Cornish Pirates rugby players Jack
Andrew and Rob Elloway
After falling foul to the weather the previous Friday, Sports Day 2014 went down as
one of the best ever. It all happened on the day: from torrential rain showers during
the 800 metres, to dead heats, photo finishes and even the world’s biggest ever Macarena!
Students were greeted by professional rugby players during the afternoon in
the shape of Cornish Pirates, Jack Andrew and Rob Elloway. The lead for the title
changed hands dramatically throughout the course of the day, but in the end there
was only one winner as Matt Pereira and Izzy Berks of Pendennis lifted the trophy
aloft. For a full review by the Student Publicity Team, go to pages 8 & 9.
YEAR 11 BOW OUT OF PENRYN COLLEGE
YEAR 11 LEAVERS
Penryn College’s ‘Class of 2014’
bowed out in style at Merchant’s
Manor in June for their end of year
prom.
The annual event saw the end of
five years at the college and more
recently, the end of their GCSE examinations.
They were rewarded
with glorious sunshine on the night
as over 170 pupils and staff arrived
for the occasion.
As usual, one of the most anticipated
parts of the evening was the
arrivals and the contrasting array
of transportation. Students arrived
in convertible Bentleys, Jaguars, an
old fashioned school bus, custom
pickup trucks, lorries, a tractor and
even a plumber’s van!
Hundreds waited for the arrival of
the students in the sun taking pictures,
to give the students a real
Hollywood red carpet welcome.
The boys looked as smart as ever
including some particularly colourful
and inventive suit choices, with
the girls all looking stunning in
their various gowns and dresses.
The year group gathered together
on the hotel’s lawn for photographs
and a quick chat, before
they headed inside to be served.
Some of the male guests managed
to get the England World Cup Football
match on their phones, but
spirits weren’t dampened by the
result, with everyone enjoying
each other’s company.
Following an excellent three course
meal served by the superb Merchants
Manor staff, the students
danced the night away with local dj
‘Kris Kool’. The students then said
their goodbyes and headed off for
the long summer, before picking
up their results at the end of August.
Organiser Ross Hancock, said “It’s
one of the dates on the calendar
everyone looks forward to. There is
Follow us @collegepenryn
always a lot of organisation that
goes into nights such as these, but
the girls who have helped out have
been fantastic and it was a great
night. The hotel were fantastic as
usual and we were lucky to have
such superb weather.”
It was a busy week for the departing
Year 11s, as Monday saw the
traditional leavers’ day. Again the
weather was kind, as a pizza lunch
was enjoyed on the lawn at the
front of the school, amongst the
usual shirt signing and picture taking
formalities.
The day ended with a leavers’ assembly
including some light
hearted moments from over the
years, memorable pictures,
speeches and farewells from staff.
The year group said their brief
goodbyes before meeting up one
last time at the prom three days
later.
Effective Skills for the Future

In February twenty of Penryn College’s
most Gifted and Talented
mathematicians from years 10 and
11 entered the national Intermediate
Maths Challenge competition.
The UKMT Individual Maths Challenges
are lively, intriguing multiple
choice question papers, which
are designed to stimulate interest
in Maths in large numbers of pupils.
They attract over 600,000 entries
from over 4,000 schools and
colleges each year.
15 out of the 20 pupils (75%)
scored well enough to gain certificates
– nationally this figure is only
the top 40%. In addition 3 year 10
pupils scored highly enough to be
invited to participate in the very
selective next round, the ‘Pink Kangaroo’.
These were Josh Wilson,
Niamh Lister and Sam Hancock.
In April came the regional round of
the Team Maths Challenge. Four
talented year 8 and 9 students –
Calvin Barker and Cameron Wilson
from year 9 and Chelsi Mitchell
and Floyd Ratcliffe from year 8
represented the school at the
Cornwall final and performed admirably.
Following closely, came the national
Junior Maths Challenge for
year 7 and year 8. 120 students
were entered. For many of the
year 7s this was their first opportunity
to test themselves in this type
of very challenging competition.
BAROQUE BANQUET FOR YEAR 8 STUDENTS
BAROQUE BANQUET
The annual ‘Baroque Banquet’
for year 8 students once again
showcased a term’s worth of
superb work in music, art and
drama.
Baroque is a period of artistic
style in time and the year 8 students
have been matching that
work in the last term. In art, students
produced traditional Baroque
pieces such as wallpaper
and mirror frames to decorate
Kernewek Hall.
There were some
tremendous dramatic
performances
from various
drama groups, inspired
by a specific
episode of Dr. Who
that featured the
Baroque theme.
The ‘banquet’ was
compered by year 8 students,
dressed in traditional costume.
Music students performed their
baroque inspired pieces in
groups and individually, as well
as showcasing some video and
audio recordings from earlier in
the term.

YEAR 9 SCIENCE STUDENTS EXCEL AT UNIVERSITY
SCIENCE TRIP
For the second successive year,
year 9 scientists have run a
thermal image project in collaboration
with Dr Anderson of
Exeter University ESI.
This year the group expanded it
to take in two classes. The aim
of the project was to get the
pupils to work in teams and decide
on their own hypothesis
and then design an experiment
to test it, based around thermal
imaging technology.
The pupils planned and carried
out a preliminary experiment
over the spring term, and then a
group of postgraduate students
from the university came in for
a lesson and reviewed the work,
helping the pupils to improve on
their experimental design.
Follow us @collegepenryn
The girls show off their ‘Best Scientific Poster’ certificate
Over the summer term they
completed their final experiments
and presented their work
in the form of a poster. Dr
Anderson then hosted us at the
ESI for a mock 'science conference',
a model of how real life
scientists share their finding in
an informal way using posters.
At the end of the session at the
ESI Dr Anderson gave the pupils
very positive feedback and presented
prizes for the most original
hypothesis, most scientific
approach, best verbal feedback
and best in show. It was a very
positive morning and all parties
are hoping to repeat the
scheme next year.
There are few bigger moments in
your school life than arriving and
leaving at Penryn College, but
graduating from year 9 to year 10,
is another.
The step up from key stage 3 to
key stage 4 and into GCSEs is a big
one. If this year group have anything
to say about it though ,
they’ll make it look as easy as they
do with everything else.
Guests were greeted at the entrance
College by music that would be
performed later on in the evening
as well as being served refreshments
prepared by the students
him for the following day
against all the other unbeaten dogs
from various categories. The Sunday
of the competition saw Kian
and Rocket face stiff competition
from 130 other dogs and their
owners, all vying for the coveted
‘Kennel Club Reserve Challenge
Certificate’, the biggest honour in
dog handling.
Kian again came in first place, winning
his class with Rocket, who was
also named best bitch in show to
secure the honour.
“It’s the highest award that can be
given (the Kennel Club Reserve
Challenge Certificate), so I’m delighted,
it was quite a weekend!”
said Kian. “Crufts was brilliant earlier
in the year and we were keen
to do well on the Saturday, but to
win on both the Saturday and Sunday
having qualified was amazing”
he added.
Kian also regularly writes for the
internationally published “Boxer
Quarterly” which is distributed all
around Europe.
Kian will no doubt have plenty to
write about for the up and coming
July edition, as he continues to
make a well established name for
himself in the industry.

SPORTS DAY WINNERS 2014 - PENDENNIS
SPORTS DAY
The annual Penryn College Sports
Day eventually took place following
a cancellation due to bad weather
the week before. It is one of the
most anticipated dates on the
school calendar, and as ever didn’t
disappoint as students and staff
enjoyed the day and the wonderful
warm atmosphere writes the
Student Publicity Team.
The opportunities for students on
Sports Day spread far and wide, as
pupils competed in all sports including:
rugby, football, cricket,
rounders, badminton, table tennis,
dance, skating, trampoline and
many more. Students competed in
their houses for the various morning
events in a bid to gain points to
go towards their final tally in a
quest for Sports Day glory.
Sports Day Review—Student Publicity Team Page 12
As the afternoon events took to the
field, the pupils passion was in
abundance. A sea of colour including
the houses traditional green,
blue, yellow and purple greeted
spectators, with students sporting
various body paints, flags and banners
all cheering on their houses.
Pupils danced to the music over the
PA system as their afternoon and
points tally updates were
compered by Mr. Johnson, which
also led a mass Macarena later on
in the afternoon!
When it came down to the serious
competition on the track, the standard
was high and the atmosphere
was tense with some very close
finishes. Cornish Pirates players
Jack Andrew and Rob Elloway were
in attendance to offer support and
pose for pictures with the winners
before presenting the cup to the
winners later on in the day.
Those competing would have to
run in races including the 800, 400,
200 and 100 metres before the
4x100 metre relay. There were
some outstanding performances,
with Chevonne Johanning, Izzy
Berks and Jack Nancarrow all winning
two or more races each. There
was also two photo finishes and
one dead heat for the first time in
many years.
The leading house changed hands
on several occasions as every point
counted going into the final races.
In the end though, it was Pendennis
who collected the Sports Day
cup to the delight of their noisy fan
base, capping a memorable day.
ISABEL VISITS AUSCHWITZ & JAMAL COMES HOME
ALUMNI
Former Penryn College pupil Isabel
Rawet has recently participated in the
Holocaust Education Trust's Lessons
From Auschwitz project, designed to
help students make sense of the Holocaust
and the experience of those who
perished at the Auschwitz-Birkenau
death camps.
Isabel, a first year History student at
Truro College, and friend Molly Songer’s
trip to Poland brought them
closer to understanding the horrific
Follow us @collegepenryn
events of the Holocaust and anti-
Semitism today.
The visit began with a flight to Krakow
and a visit to the Jewish Cemetery in
Oswiecim where the students explored
Jewish life before the war and the impact
of Nazi occupation. They then
toured the Auschwitz One camp and
museum. A bus then took them to the
site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death
camp and the harrowing ruins of the
gas chambers and crematoria.
At sunset a Rabbi recounted his family's
experience of the Holocaust, with
his grandmother's survival and subsequent
escape to Britain on false papers.
He then offered a Hebrew prayer
at the place where over a million individuals
were put to death. His message
was simple – "Hearing is not like seeing"
– and he begged the assembled
students not to forget those who died
and to challenge any form of discrimination
or prejudice they encountered.
Isabel, who hopes to read modern history
at Cambridge, said: "I had the
most moving experience of my life. In
Alumni Page 14
class we studied the holocaust theoretically;
this visit gave me an appreciation
of the individual tragedies behind
the incomprehensible figures."
Elsewhere, ex Penryn College pupil and
Cornwall rugby player Jamal Ford-
Robinson has announced he is ‘coming
home’ after being unveiled as a new
signing by the Cornish Pirates at a
press conference.
Jamal made his first appearances for
the Cornwall Senior XV this season,
impressing with a try at Twickenham in
the final and the Pirates have snapped
up his services. The highly-rated 20-
year-old has signed a two year deal at
the Pirates after head coach Ian Davies
made his move ahead of interest from
a number of other clubs, describing
the capture of Ford-Robinson as “really
exciting for the club”.
Jamal joins from Cambridge, where he
was named in the National Two South
dream team of the season and also
represented England counties in Georgia
this summer, following Cornwall
duties.
French Exchange Visit—Page 16
FRENCH EXCHANGE STUDENTS EMBARK ON RETURN LEG
FRENCH EXCHANGE
On the 5 th of June, 28
excited year 9 students
left Penryn College to
travel to Toulouse in
France, where they were
welcomed by their exchange
partners, writes
Mrs Smeijkel.
In the last edition of ‘The
Pennant’, it was Penryn
College students playing
the role of the host, but
this time they would
have the favour returned.
The students spent a
whole week in Toulouse,
which is known as the
‘pink city’. During the
stay, year 9 students enjoyed
a town trail and a
visit to the historic
walled city of Carcassonne.
They also had a
tour of Toulouse’s rugby
stadium, which is a rare
privilege and the students
were told about
the educational opportunities
for the young
players of ‘Stade
Tolousain’.
An interesting morning
was also spent at the
Airbus plant, where pupils
were given an insight
of how the Airbus
A380 are built, and the
different European
countries, which contribute
to its production.
Time was also spent in
the hosting school, ‘Le
Collège Clémence
Isaure’, where Penryn
College students took
part in some of their
hosts lessons.
This year’s highlight
though, had to be the
three day weekend, during
which many more
fun activities where undertaken
in the families.
The students returned to
Penryn on the 12 th June,
tired but happy from the
experience and the
many friendships they
have made. It was a very
successful and memorable
trip, enjoyed by all!
