FROM THE
EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
We are delighted to launch this new Gallery
Guide. This publication will be produced
twice a year, so keep it handy to remind you
of all the outstanding exhibitions, events and
programs that the KAG is offering over the
next six months.
The KAG has been working closely with the
Kamloops Symphony and Western Canada
Theatre in advocating the importance of arts
and culture in the face of cuts to Provincial
grants. We have met with Mayor Peter
Milobar and MLA Kevin Krueger, and made
presentations to the Community Gaming
Grant Review, the BC Finance Committee,
the BC Arts Council Board and the Premier’s
round table on job creation—it's been a very
busy time!
Our key points in these presentations have
been to emphasize the important role that
the arts and cultural sector plays in sustaining
and enhancing our economy; that we are
an integral part of the fabric that draws
economic opportunities to our Province and
to our Region.
We articulated the connection between the
quality of life within a community and its arts
and cultural activities; that by participating in
or enjoying art classes, parades, festivals, art
IN MEMORIAM
and history museums, theatres and symphony
orchestras community members of all ages
and diverse backgrounds strengthen their
relationships with one another through
shared experiences.
By nurturing creativity and fostering
enjoyment and appreciation of artistic
accomplishments, we develop a better
understanding of ourselves and the world
around us and we expand our capacity to be
thoughtful individuals.
Across the Province these severe cuts are
beginning to effect core operating functions
that have taken decades to build. There are
artists and arts organizations that depend
upon the expertise and facilities the arts
community provides in the TNRD. There are
educational programs, tourism initiatives,
employment and recruitment programs that
rely on our work.
Kamloops is an extraordinary city and the arts
and cultural sector plays an important role in
making this a great place to live and work.
Thanks so much for your support!
