What is CAPP?
• Banner Student System’s “Curriculum, Advising
and Program Planning” Module
• Provides functionality for:
– Defining rules for programs of study
– Degree Audit (individual or batch processing)
– Advising (faculty or student self advise)
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 3
History
• In it from the beginning (beta site)
• Participated in focus groups with SCT to identify
requirements
• Participated in extensive testing of compliance
process for SCT
• Georgia Tech has not modified CAPP (so far)
• Original implementation goal was parallel
processing for Winter ‘98
• Implementation delayed several times due to
outstanding defects with compliance process
Intended Use of CAPP
• Phase I:
– Replace Cyber (legacy system) templates
– Primary tool to perform initial degree compliance
evaluation in Registrar’s Office
• Phase II
– Roll-out to academic units to perform degree
compliance evaluation and advising
• Phase III
– Make available to students and faculty via web for
advising, compliance review, and degree shopping
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 5
What Happened?
• Responsibility of Degree Certification Staff
– 4 full-time employees on staff
– One person dedicated 70% of time to testing and
program build effort
– Wrote in-house training manual for Registrar’s Office,
academic units, and students (400 hours of effort)
• Goal was to implement on Quarters for “practice”
– Complete build of Quarter Curriculum Program Rules
used for Winter, Spring and Summer 1999
– Program rules built to work around known defects
– Complete build of Curriculum Rules
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 6
What Happened (continued)?
• Identified and addressed needs not met by CAPP
– Reports and various output
• Schedule and Final Audit Reports
• Commencement Program Report
– Update Processes
• Assign Honors
– Notification Processes
• Web and e-mail
– Web forms
• Extensively tested each new release and addressed
persistent defects
– Summer 1999 - Most defects resolved
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 7
Semester Conversion Woes
• Programs are single-level specific
• Multiple revisions of Curriculum Rules
• Not possible to build rules to accommodate
quarter and semester course detail
– Students will receive “semester” degree, but may be
evaluated under a “quarter” curriculum
• Students with both types of credit will be
manually evaluated using a Crystal Reports
worksheet.
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 8
4
Outstanding Issues
• Compliance Process
– Repeated courses
– Unused Hours
– Single Entity Re-use (courses with attributes)
• Compliance Output
– Too Long and complicated for casual user
• Batch Processing
– Courses not evaluated in proper order
– Must use population selection
– One output mode does not yet work correctly, resulting
in some students not printing at all
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 9
Outstanding Issues (continued)
• Product still being corrected by SCT
– Previously corrected defects are resurrected
– Users have little confidence in system, which results in
manually double-checking the results
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 10
5
The Current Plan
• Tech will use CAPP for students with semester
credit only
• Will produce advising compliance at end of
freshmen year
• Will make CAPP available for advising Summer
or Fall 2000
• Students with Quarter credit will be manually
evaluated
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 11
Degree Certification Process
• Student submits petition to academic department
• Department evaluates, usually with check sheet, and
forwards petition to Degree Certification
• Degree Certification performs CAPP compliance
• Results are noted and put on web for student to see
• DC performs Schedule Audit (results compared with
CAPP results)
• Deficiencies and/or status are updated on web
• Degree Candidate grades are processed
• Degree Certification performs Final Audit
• Deficiencies and/or status are updated on web
• Commencement
What you need to know about CAPP
• The more flexible the academic program, the
harder to build the rules
• All the CAPP screens look the same, easy to lose
your place
• Hierarchy is confusing
• Almost too many options
• Tie-ins to other parts of Banner are critical
– Curriculum Rules
– Repeat Checking
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 13
What you need to know about CAPP
• Running Compliances is time consuming
• Requires good knowledge of Academic History,
General Student, and Registration
• Requires extensive training and great deal of time
to implement
• Does not work well with semester conversion
• Still some outstanding defects
• Output will probably not be acceptable
• You will need additional reports and processes
9/9/1999 Office of the Registrar 14
What you need to know about CAPP
• Build Areas, Groups and Details on paper before
entering in Banner
– You need a roadmap or template to work from
• Use consistent build methodology for all programs
– Naming conventions
– Codes
– Rule structure
