SPONSORSHIP
AND EXHIBITION
PROSPECTUS
INVITATION
We’re very proud to be bringing the 15th International Conference
on Systems Biology to Melbourne—hosting it in the Southern
Hemisphere for the first time.
Systems biology is a multidisciplinary science that can help us tackle
big questions. How does a coral reef recover from a cyclone? How do
the habits of parents affect the success of IVF? How does every cell in
the heart contribute to its function? Can we model a whole yeast cell
or even a whole rat?
Systems biology applies methods from engineering and maths to
focus on whole biological systems—organs, entire organisms and
even ecosystems. As its profile grows in Australia and internationally,
systems biology is poised to transform the life sciences and
biotechnology.
But it can’t be done by just one person or one laboratory. Systems
biology requires integration of data, and expertise from medicine and
biology, mathematics, computer science and engineering.
In Europe, the USA and Japan systems biology is an integral
part of the leading life science institutes. Australia’s community of
systems biologists is growing, and this conference will give them an
unprecedented opportunity to showcase their work and forge new
collaborations with the world’s leaders in the field.
Be in at the beginning
This conference is an opportunity for your organisation:
• to engage with the leaders of this growing field
• to contribute to the establishment of systems biology in Australia
and New Zealand
• to demonstrate that you are at the cutting edge–ready and able
to adapt to and support the transformation of the life sciences.
We look forward to your support as we work to build new partnerships
in Australia and across the world.
WHY MELBOURNE?
Australia is quickly building a reputation for research in systems biology. We’re
home to a node of Japan’s famous Systems Biology Institute, which connects
Japanese and Australian research and industry partners, and systems biology
research groups are forming across the country.
With ten universities, five teaching hospitals and more than a dozen leading
research institutes, Melbourne is a major Australian hub for education and
science, making it the perfect city to host the first International Conference on
Systems Biology in the southern hemisphere.
Melbourne is also home to major research infrastructure and facilities, including
the Australian Synchrotron, the Victorian Life Sciences Computation Initiative
and a new Victorian comprehensive cancer centre.
International Systems Biology Conference 2014–Sponsorship and exhibition prospectus
WHAT IS SYSTEMS BIOLOGY?
Using techniques from maths and engineering, systems biology is a new
approach to analysing biological data, with applications in medicine,
agriculture, ecology, drug design, industry and basic research.
OVERVIEW
SYSTEMS BIOLOGY:
THE FIFTH ELEMENT
Four generally accepted elements underlie modern reductionist biology:
1. Gene as the basis for heredity
2. Cell as the fundamental unit of organisms
3. Chemistry of biological processes
4. Evolution of species by natural selection
These four concepts have gradually developed into distinct, specialised fields
of biology: genetics and molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and
evolutionary biology, respectively. No life form can be imagined without genes,
cells, enzymes, or evolution, yet they are insufficient to fully explain life.
Systems biology represents a fifth fundamental aspect of life. Systems biology
presupposes that complex systems are required to understand the four
elements of life processes in that:
• Gene products do not act alone
• Individual cells separated from their neighbours lose many of their
functional and structural attributes
It uses all the tools of the biological and computer science revolutions to look
at whole organs, plants, animals, and even entire ecosystems.
Collaboration is key in systems biology: building links between disciplines to
better understand complex systems.
• Macromolecules and metabolites are intimately linked to each other
• Evolution acts on complex multi-scale interconnected systems of
biochemical reactions, genes, cells
This conference seeks to capture the multiple facets that comprise a systems
understanding of life, as a single common thread that unifies seemingly different
approaches:
• Mapping and modeling macromolecular and cellular networks
• Understanding cellular organisation
• Information flow and logical relationships
• Mathematical modeling of local molecular relationships
• De novo engineering of molecular circuits (synthetic biology)
Four key areas will be discussed and dissected throughout the conference
• Applied systems biology
• Modelling complex systems and issues being faced
• Software modelling date and technology
• Social and governance issues in systems biology
