Dear West Families,
Though hard to believe, it is already February and our school year is more than
half over— what a great one it has been! We have several events this month
geared to keep you in communication with school staff and planning for next
year.
Inside This
Newsletter
2 Course, Career & Curriculum
Night
First, THIS Thursday, February 3 we host Course, Career, Curriculum Night from 6-
8:30pm. The event is set up so that you can visit any staff member to discuss recommendations
for courses for your student for next year during this timeframe as
all staff will be in attendance. There are also grade-level specific sectionals
listed in more detail on our website and page 2.
While CCC Night kicks off our planning for next year’s course selection, the official
course selection timeline has been pushed back this year until mid-March.
Students will be given all forms and directions needed in mid-March and need to
have selected courses through the online login provided at that time prior to the
end of March. Please contact the guidance department with any questions.
Also, please note that Parent/Teacher Conferences will by held on Tuesday, February
22 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. Student schedules will be available
for parents. This is a great chance to connect with teachers, especially because
many students have begun new courses at the start of second semester. We all
hope to see you there!
Finally, for some reason (perhaps the prior months of shorter days and cold
weather), February seems to be a time when students get bored more easily
and experiment with things academically and socially that they might not otherwise
do. As parents I want to be sure you are aware that this is a significant
trend we see each year from students so that we can work together to avoid the “February funk” as it is often
referred to. Perhaps this is a good time to focus on post-secondary goals and make March Madness a
great chance to investigate colleges and discuss career goals. We can also jointly reinforce the message
that learning does not just happen in 47 minutes per subject per day, rather persistence and mastery matter.
Together we can help students through this challenging time!
I look forward to seeing you here for the many events we have over this month. Stay warm!
Sincerely,
Melissa Thompson
Many student groups and the school offer different fundraisers on a weekly or monthly basis meant to benefit both
the consumer and group. Several examples are below and include general purchases at retailers such as Office Depot,
Best Buy, and Target, as well as purchasing meals, Entertainment books, or other items from school groups.
Monthly we will feature current fundraisers and contact information so that anyone can participate. Additionally, we
will list specific items that could be dropped off in the main office for general school use. These we consider school
wish list items. If there are other items or ideas you have to donate to the school, please contact Melissa Thompson
at 262-970-3910. Items greater in value than $500 are formally recognized by the school board. Thanks for considering
this!
Why Do We Need Libraries?
Libraries are more than books. They are life-long learning hubs
with a full range of print and electronic resources that support life
goals and achievements. These resources include books, magazines,
videotapes, computers, databases, and places for people to
study and conduct research. In addition, another resource that all
Wisconsin residents have access to is BadgerLink resources.
These resources are not available through Google. Libraries have
professional staff to assist users in finding information and in developing critical learning skills.
As stated above, BadgerLink provides a collection of essential online reference and research
tools such as magazine and newspaper articles, reference materials, biographies, original historical
materials, images, and other resources. These materials have been selected so that students
can be confident that only quality information from recognized publishers or sources is available.
When users search BadgerLink, they can be confident that the responses are reliable and
current. Students will not be subjected to results with thousands of irrelevant and possibly pornographic
responses a Google-type search may produce. BadgerLink also provides access to
materials not available through Google or other public search engines.
Visit the library and its website to see for yourself how helpful these resources can be for all of
your research needs. (www.waukeshawestlibrary.org)
Hello West Families!
On Wednesday, January 12 th we hosted our Academic Focus for Families event in the
West High School Auditorium where you were all invited to come in and pick up your student’s
test scores from the Explore, PLAN, and PSAT. Upon picking up those scores, you were welcome
to experience a presentation that included interpretation of those test scores, information
about college/career selection, and an overview of a new college and career planning software
called Naviance.
A Naviance account has been created for every family at West High School, and this software
is ready for you to use. Some features of Naviance include a college super match, national
scholarship searches, resume builder, career search, task manager, and student planner. In our
efforts to have you access this great tool as soon as possible, we are still working on customizing
this software to best meet the needs of our students.
Our students have already been given your Naviance family account information which is
located on the results of their PLAN, Explore, or PSAT test packet. For seniors it was given to
them on a note card. Please look for this information from your student to begin accessing this
program. In addition to the account information you also received Waukesha West’s custom Naviance
web site address, which you can also link to on the West High School web page.
We are excited to provide you with this valuable guidance tool and look forward to it becoming
a vital part of our student’s high school and post secondary planning!
West Artists Show their Winning Art Work
at the Milwaukee Art Museum
On February 5 th , Several Waukesha West art students will accept awards for their
winning art entries in the 2011 Scholastic Art Awards- Wisconsin Regional Exhibition at
the Milwaukee Art Museum. Over 1300 entries from 87 secondary schools all over the state
were considered for the competition this year. Only 338 of the very best works were chosen.
From 125 art and photography senior portfolios, 55 were accepted to advance to the national
competition to compete for scholarships. Because the artwork juried into this show is
so outstanding in its quality, art educators consider it as the “Super Bowl” of high school art
competitions. Our students who received “Gold Keys” will have their winning entries go on to
be considered by the jury for the National Scholastics Art Awards Exhibition in Washington
D.C.
Wisconsin’s exhibit is ranked in the top 5 in quality of regional Scholastic Art Awards
exhibitions in the country. Being that it is the only regional show that is held in a major art
museum, it is quite an honor for a student to have his/her art displayed in such an impressive
space. The world-renowned Calatrava wing of the art museum is where the students
have the awards ceremony.
If you are curious in seeing what the best Wisconsin high school art looks like, go see
this exhibit. It is at the Milwaukee Art Museum until March 6th. Below is a list of Waukesha
West student artists accepted in this very competitive event.
Project Graduation
Calling All West Parents!!!
Project Graduation is a well-chaperoned, all night celebration for Waukesha West’s graduating seniors held
on graduation night. This event would not be possible without the support of West parents and the generosity
of the Waukesha community. We have a great committee of parents that do the planning during the
school year but we need about 150 volunteers throughout the night to help in various areas. Parents
(especially moms & dads of underclassmen) please consider joining us for a few hours to make this event
a success. It is a lot of fun for the seniors and the adults as well. We need help in the weeks leading up to
Project Graduation with ticket sales, on graduation day we need help with decorations & set-up and that
night we need lots of help with Security, Carnival, Casino, Kitchen, Bingo, and several other areas.
We are also looking for donations, which is another way you can help. When you’re cleaning out your closets
please keep Project Graduation in mind! We are looking for children’s board games for this year’s
theme, The Game of LIFE. Are you ready to let go of Candyland, Chutes & Ladders or SORRY? Let us know
and we’ll put them to good use. We are also in need of tickets for Marcus theaters, Summerfest, State Fair,
Brewers games, etc. Restaurant, coffee shop, gas or pizza gift cards are great too! Be on the lookout for
our Project Graduation information / sign-up letter which will be mailed to all West households next month.
Please stop by our table at conferences to see how you can help! Be sure to check out our Wish List and
please be generous. We need the entire Waukesha West family to pitch in to make this awesome graduation
celebration a success. Important note: We are currently in need of a coordinator for decorations and
our photo booth at Project Graduation. Please consider volunteering! Have any questions or want to get
more involved? Please call Pat Ward 896-0690.
