TRAMPOLINE NEWS No 58 October 2009
Editor: John D Beeton: john@beeton9.wanadoo.co.uk
Dear Reader,
EDITORIAL
Martin Laws
Welcome to the October edition of TRAMPOLINE NEWS
2009. My thanks to all those who contribute to this our most
important newsletter, especially our Editor, JOHN BEETON.
As always, please circulate this latest edition as widely as
possible. Note: Trampoline News can also be viewed on the BG
webpage under Trampoline – Download. Please let your club
members know.
Since August we have seen quite a busy two months with
International competitions! First over the August bank holiday
weekend, England took a team to the Flanders Fliffus Cup in
Belgium, with GB taking a squad to the Ostend World Cup.
Belgium saw the sky painted Gold for Kat Driscoll, who won
her first World Cup! It’s been a while since a GB lady has
taken top podium position; the last was Claire Wright’s win in
Sophia in 2005! Well done Kat.
For many attending the Flanders Fliffus Cup, it was their first
representative international competition. The English Team
performed very well indeed, taking 7 out of a possible 18
medals. Special mention goes to Rebecca Finch & Clare
Stapenhill, who claimed top spot in the Junior Girls Synchro.
Then GB sent a team to the Polish World Cup in Zielona
Góra and then Germany for the World Cup in Salzgitter. The
Polish World Cup was not as successful as Belgium with a
young team attending, but in a large field dominated by the
formidable Chinese, all of our gymnasts gained some valuable
experience.
Germany saw the GB team fair slightly better, with Katherine
Driscoll claiming the highest ranking of the GB team, finishing
in 10th place in the ladies, with James Higgins being the
highest placed GB male in 15th. Well done to all those who
competed.
I hope that you all enjoyed the summer break and are now well
into your training for the new season kicking off in October for
the Regions and January for the National Competitors. I am
certain that all your hard work and effort will be rewarded in the
coming months and you will all achieve your personal goals.
Coming soon, will also be the publication of the Trampoline
Development Pathway. The NTTC and BG Trampoline World
Class team have been working on a process that will help
improve development of our gymnasts from Juniors, right
through to world class Senior gymnasts. Each group have so far
worked excellently on their own different streams and we are all
now working to pull everything together to complete the part
of the scheme to give all of our talented gymnasts every
opportunity to fulfil their potential.
I would like to thank the World Class team of John Beeton,
Georgina Sharples & Tim Jones for all their efforts so far and
hope that we can continue to work together to complete the
scheme.
Next Steps (Schools) has now taken off and there is great
interest in trampoline for school activity. There will soon be
released further information on the simplified judging level for
students and teachers, following the second pilot held this week.
As clubs you may well get the opportunity to link with local
schools and stimulate this competitive opportunity. I would
encourage you all to form these links, but please remember this
is a gentle introduction. It is however pleasing to see that body
management has been included even at this embryonic stage.
With the current international season coming to a close it only
leaves me to wish our Senior team every good wish for the
forthcoming World Championships in St Petersburg RUS
during the month of November (11-14), followed the week
afterwards with the World Age-Group Competitions (WAGC)
(18-21) at the same venue.
I am certain that all BG members will join with me in the same
sentiment.
Good luck to all.
These were excellent results, both for Katherine Driscoll, 1 st in
women’s individual trampoline, Rachael Letsche 2 nd and Zara
Maclean 5 th in the women’s tumbling events. Our synchronised
pairings of Katherine Driscoll / Cara Jamieson, along with
Steven Williams / Jack Helme reached their respective finals
finishing in 5 th and 7 th place respectively – another good result
for TeamGB.
This was also Laura Gallagher and Jack Helme’s first senior
international event. Congratulations to you both. Editor
Additional Report by Sharon Wood HOD
An excellent competition with some outstanding results,
notably from Katherine Driscoll who won the ladies event in a
very impressive way and from Rachael Letsche who won the
Silver medal in the tumbling competition. Rachel, Zara and
Jenny finished the preliminaries in the top 6 which bodes well
for the World Championships team event and in the ladies
trampoline, with Katherine taking first place, Yasmin just
outside the final in 9 th , Cara in 10 th and Laura 14 th , shows
encouraging signs for ladies trampolining moving forward.
The men didn’t fair so well. All team members completed
some very good compulsory routines but failed to impress with
their voluntary routines with the exception of Steven Walsh
who finished a credible 14 th overall. More work on consistency
in competition is required if we are going to make headway in
these events.
Flanders Fliffis Cup
A large number of English gymnasts attended this bi-annual
event, held in Ostend BEL in conjunction with the FIG World
Cup.
Results of the various events were as follows
The penultimate event in the 2009 World Cup series saw a
considerable increase in entries from that of Ostend BEL the
week previous. It was noted that GBR did not enter any
tumblers or women synchronised pairings in this particular
competition. It was pleasing to see however, the current
Olympic men’s champion LU Chunlong CHI participating for
the first time in an FIG event since Beijing – he did not
disappoint, winning the men’s event in an impressive 42.4/16.6
points over his countryman TU Xiao 41.9/17.4 points. LU’s
overall score for the three rounds was also a new world record,
previously held by the great Alexandre Moskalenko RUS
since the 2001 World Championships which were held in
Odense DEN. Unfortunately, the current ladies Olympic
Champion HE Wenna CHI had to pull out of the event at the
very last minute owing to some problem in training at the
present time but is expected to be fully fit for St Petersburg in
November.
The Chinese, having missed out on both the Loulé and Ostend
World Cups, sent their second team to the Sofia World Cup.
However, they were present here in Zielona Góra in force, and
what a force they are! It is safe to say that they completely
dominated the trampoline preliminaries, taking the top four
places in the men’s event, and the top three places in the
women’s event!
Main results were as follows:
Trampoline Men – Individual (69 entries)
01 LU Chunlong CHI 42.4/16.6 points
02 TU Xiao CHI 41.9/17.4 points
The team travelled to Germany in two parties from Manchester
and London, with the London party having to zig zag across
Germany to reach Hanover! However, the team were able to reunite
within an hour of landing in Hanover.
Like Zielona Góra the week previous most of the main
contenders who will feature in the forthcoming World
Championships were present in Hanover with some 66 entries
in the men’s event and 49 entries in the women’s event. Again,
GBR were without members of the national tumbling team –
nor did we have entries in either of the men or women’s
synchronised events. Main results were as follows:
Trampoline Men – Individual (66 entries)
01 DONG Dong CHI 42.0/16.6 points
02 Martin Gromowski GER 41/16.2 points
03 TU Xiao CHI 40.9/17.4 points
15 James Higgins GBR 67.7/15.8 points
24 Steven Walsh GBR 66.1/15.2 points
32 Luke Rendell GBR 64.4/14.6 points
44 Nicholas Joyce GBR 62.4/13.1 points
Trampoline Men – Synchronised (23 entries)
28 Amanda Parker GBR 59.6/12.5 points
39 Yasmin Gumbs GBR 45.0/7.3 points
Trampoline Women – Synchronised (12 entries)
01 Ekaterina Kilkho/Anna Savkina UZB 46.1/13.1 points
02 Victoria Voronina/Anastasia Velichko RUS 45.4/11.0 pts
03 Sarah Seyd/Jessica Simon GER 44.7/11.6 points
For the second week running the Chinese dominated both the
women and men’s events, with the men finishing in the first
four places after the preliminaries, and the women having three
gymnasts in the first three places in their event, with their
Olympic Champion due to join the team for the world
championships in St Petersburg!
The Great Britain team members are still endeavouring to come
to grips with their performances, with time running out fast if
they are going to make any kind of impact in November; and
with only Katherine Driscoll and James Higgins showing
signs of making inroads to the top 15 in their particular event, it
does not bode well for places in the team finals in either of the
men or women’s event.
World Class Programme
Georgina Sharples
I hope that you will join with me in welcoming Mhairi Keil to
the World Class Trampoline Programme. For those of you that
have not previously met Mhairi she is a Sports Nutritionist
with the English Institute of Sport in the Midlands region and
as of the beginning of September I am delighted to say that she
will be working a number of days for British Gymnastics
primarily with the World Class Trampoline programme and also
the Artistic Programme.
Mhairi is contracted by British Gymnastics one day a week
(flexible timetabling) and has initially been asked to meet
individually with podium athletes and to begin addressing some
identified key topic areas in order to share information on
aspects such as Recovery and Hydration.
She will also be in attendance for some part of future National
Trampoline Squads.
Great Britain v German
Youth Match
Taunton
26 th September 2009
As has been the case for a great many years this annual match
was closely contested with both teams putting on a tremendous
display which had the large audience on the edge of their seats
throughout.
As can be seen from the results this was a closely contested
match, with Great Britain winning the match 1081.3 points to
Germany’s 1051.0 points.
This was a well organised event and on behalf of the NTTC and
British Gymnastics I would like to thank both Sharon Wood
and Jackie Collings – along with her local committee – who
did everything possible to ensure that the competition ran
smoothly and that our guests enjoyed their visit, taking home
found memories of their visit to Taunton and surrounding area.
