About Shawl-Anderson Dance Center
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is a non-profit founded in 1958 by Frank Shawl and
Victor Anderson. The Center provides Bay Area dance students of all ages and
levels with high caliber training in both contemporary and traditional movement
forms in a welcoming, non-competitive environment. Our staff is committed to
nurturing and mentoring the growth of dancers and choreographers; cultivating a
healthy and supportive atmosphere for creative expression; sustaining traditions
essential to excellence in the field; and, fostering the evolution of the art of dance.
Our staff of over 40 instructors is comprised of dance teaching artists from across
the Bay Area with extensive experience as performers, choreographers, and dance
teachers as well as rich experiences as preschool teachers, classroom teachers,
musicians, artists and more. For children and teens, we offer ballet, modern, jazz, and
Hip Hop classes and a pre-professional modern dance r r
A Personal Touch: We strive to find the right class or classes for your child based on
his/her interests and goals for dancing. Our staff is happy to meet with you to discuss
classes, levels, scholarships, and more. We also assist students in preparing for college
dance department auditions. Whether your child is starting dance for the first time, or
has a goal of becoming a professional, we work with you to right class to excite,
challenge, and inspire each student.
Our Location: The Center is located in the welcoming, comfortable Rockridge
District of Berkeley. Parents are welcome to wait in our lobby or on the porch during
class, shop or take a walk. Street parking is available: unlimited, 2-hour and metered
parking. Please read street parking signs carefully to avoid parking tickets.
Attending Classes: Students are welcome to register for the full semester or pay for
a trial class to try out a new teacher, level, or dance style. We highly encourage
every student, whether they are enrolled or taking trial classes, to
attend a minimum of 3 classes to see if it is a good fit. Our teachers
thoughtfully evaluate students during the first 3 weeks to ensure that the level and
content will be exciting and challenging for their students.
Student Conduct: All students must arrive on time and prepared to dance in a fully
engaged manner, demonstrating respect for instructors and fellow students. We ask
that each student plan to be able to attend 90% of his/her classes for the semester.
Your child/teen’s consistent attendance will benefit their learning and the learning
experience of all since dance is learned in a group context. Each teacher will also
present an individualized classroom policy regarding attire, attendance, performance,
conduct and participation. Please make a special note to look for a note home from
your child/teen’s teacher at the beginning of each semester. If you or your child/teen
has any questions or concerns during the semester please contact Katie Kruger, Youth
Program Director, at katie@shawl-anderson.org
Performances: Each December and June, students may participate in performances.
In December, children ages 3-12 share with families on their final day of class. Teen
Modern and Hip Hop students will be invited to perform during the last weekend of
classes. In June, students ages 9 and up have the opportunity to perform on a full size
stage off-site during or after the final week of classes. All other classes will have the
opportunity to share with family and friends on the last day of class, or at an informal
sharing at the Center on the final weekend of classes. Our performances and showings
provide our students with the chance to demonstrate their progress and experience the
challenge and thrill of performing with their peers.
Ballet Ages 3-18
We believe that ballet can be taught in a joyful, fun manner for youth of all ages, abilities, and body
types. If a child or teen is excited about ballet, we are excited to teach them. Shawl-Anderson Dance
Center and its teaching staff aim to move beyond the deeply held stereotypes related to ballet and
to teach children in a manner that is fun, engaging, challenging and age-appropriate. Our staff attends
to the physical, intellectual and emotional development of each young dancer based on current
wisdom around care for the body and the mind through dance practice.
PRE-BALLET ages 3-6: These classes are for children ages 3 to 6 and serve as a first introduction
to ballet. Pre-Ballet classes involve a variety of age-appropriate activities in a circle, moving across
the room, dancing freely in space, and learning short combinations. Pre-Ballet classes introduce
students to the language, etiquette, music, and stories of classical ballet. Teachers use rhymes, stories
and props such as scarves, hoops and more.
BALLET LEVEL I ages 7-12: This class is for students who have completed our pre-ballet 5-6 or are age
7-9 and new to ballet. This level is the beginning of classical ballet technique using both the barre and center.
Students may take one day or two days a week.
BALLET LEVEL II ages 8-12: This class is for students who have completed ballet level I or are 8-10 and
have had a year of ballet technique at another studio. Students will build on previous learned technique at the
barre and center. Students are requested to take 2x a week. Level II students see additional enrollment notes
for upper level students on PAGE 8.
BALLET LEVEL III ages 10-12: This class is for students who have completed ballet level II or are 9-
12 and have permission to join per Shawl-Anderson Ballet instructor. Students will continue to strengthen
technique at the barre and center. Students are required to take class 2x a week and suggested to take 3x a
week. Level III students see additional enrollment notes for upper level students on PAGE 8.
BALLET ages 12-18: These classes are modeled after an adult ballet class. Class includes 45
minutes of barre work and 45 minutes of center and across the floor work featuring adagio
combinations, turns, jumps and more. We offer two Beginning Ballet classes for students who are
new to ballet or with less than one year of experience. Based on age and grade, new ballet students
should enroll in the Ballet 11-13 or Beginning Ballet 12-18. Intermediate Ballet 12-18 is for
students in grades 6 - 12 with one or more years of experience who are ready for a more technically
challenging class. We strongly encourage all students to attend ballet twice a week to maximize their
progress.
OUR NICHE: Shawl-Anderson Dance Center’s youth ballet program is for children and teens ages 3-
18 who want to learn ballet once twice or three times per week. We do not have a conservatory
program for pre-professional ballet dancers. Our ballet instructors teach techniques that include
various ballet traditions such as the Vaganova, Cecchetti and RAD methods. Students are welcome to
come to the Center just for ballet or they may be part of our other programs in modern, jazz and Hip
Hop. Our ballet classes are also a great compliment for students who are studying drama, musical
theatre and other activities. Some students take dance classes in lieu of physical education at their high
schools. Ballet levels II, III and Intermediate see additional notes on page 8.
MY CHILD AGE 2, 3, 4 or 5 WANTS TO TAKE BALLET.
WHAT CLASSES DO YOU OFFER?
Here at Shawl-Anderson, our pre-ballet classes are for children ages 3-6. We offer pre-ballet classes that are
based in creative dance elements where students work on locomotor steps (jumping, hopping, galloping, kicking,
leaping, etc.), starting and stopping safely, getting used to being in a class environment, and getting familiar
with the aesthetics and music of ballet. We structure pre-ballet in this way because we believe that the highly
technical demands of ballet are too much for the preschool body. Students are typically ready for more
rigorous technique around age 7 or 8. Our ballet and modern classes for young children strike a balance
between exploratory exercises and more structured, "see and do" activities. Developing these important
basic skills will prepare the young dancer for the discipline of more formal ballet technique.
Jazz Ages 8-18
Our child and teen jazz classes helps students build a strong dance foundation and encourage them to bring
the spirit of jazz dance alive. Students will learn to build a strong connection between the movement and the
music. They will be given the opportunity to find a way to express themselves through dance while
developing their technique, strength, flexibility and dance vocabulary.
Modern Ages 1.5-18
Modern Dance is where the Shawl-Anderson story began as the major form practiced, performed
and taught by Frank Shawl & Victor Anderson. We offer classes for ages 1.5 to 18, including a preprofessional
track. Modern dance explores the concepts of space, time, and energy. Using some
balllet technique, modern dance requires strength paired with freedom of movement and creativity.
DANCE WITH ME ages 1.5-4: A class for children who can walk, up to age 4. An adult (parent,
guardian, nanny, etc.) must participate with the child. Class involves creative movement, song, and
play to engage the preschool child. Dance with Me is perfect for children 3 and 4 years old who still
feel more comfortable in a class with an adult participating alongside him/her.
MODERN ages 3-7: These classes involve improvisation as well as structured exercises that build
basic modern dance vocabulary. The focus is on locomotor steps, shapes, level changes, tempo
changes, and more. Our modern classes for preschool and kindergarten age students are creative
dance classes that involve props, stories, and imagery to inspire and facilitate movement.
BOYS MODERN ages 4-8: Taught by our longtime beloved teacher, Maurice Charrière, these
classes will introduce students to modern dance in a setting that is comfortable and welcoming, as
well as age appropriate for boys.
MODERN ages 7-11: These classes build on basics taught in the Modern 3-7 classes (those are not,
however, a pre-requisite to take Modern 7-9 or Modern 9-11). Students work on basic modern
technique through warm-ups, traveling patterns, and short dances and also engage in improvisation
and creative problem solving as a group, individually, and with partners.
MODERN ages 11-18: Modern for Pre-Teens and Teens is offered at three levels at the Center.
Intermediate & Advanced students please see additional notes for upper level students on page 8.
BEGINNING MODERN is for pre-teens age 11-13 & teens 14-18 who are new to modern dance.
This class teaches basic vocabulary, alignment, spatial awareness, and how to see, learn, and embody
movement phrases in class.
INTERMEDIATE MODERN builds on beginning level classes. Students refine use of momentum,
release, level change, floor work, focus, transitions and more at this level. Permission required.
ADVANCED MODERN ages 13-18: For students with several years of training in modern dance.
Permission required to enroll. This class uses the vocabulary and proper alignment the students
have worked on for several years, and now challenges the students with warm-ups and
combinations that vary in dynamic qualities, tempo, direction, and level. Students pick up and retain
movement easily, can reverse combinations, and can incorporate feedback from the teacher.
HIP HOP AGES 7-18
BEGINNING HIP HOP ages 7-10: introduces alignment through stretching, foundational Hip Hop
steps, musicality, and isolations of the body. Dancers will be challenged to pick up phrase work and
create their own choreography. This class is full of movement, freestyle, play, and fun.
INTERMEDIATE HIP HOP ages 9-11: is for students who have been studying hip hop at SADC for
at least one year. Students will be challenged to pick up movement at a faster pace, take creative
initiative and engage in developing their own choreography. Requires a recommendation
from the teacher.
BEGINNING HIP HOP ages 10-18: introduces alignment through stretching, foundational Hip Hop
steps, musicality, and isolations of the body. This class builds skills around individual expression,
freestyle, choreography retention, and performance. Dancers will create movement collaboratively
and individually and have the opportunity to share with others in the class.
HIP HOP I ages 12-18: continues to build alignment through stretching, intermediate Hip Hop
vocabulary, musicality, and isolations of the body. Level I students begin to step in front of the class
as leaders, sharing their creativity, voices, and choreography. From warm ups to across the floor to
developing choreography on other dancers; this class is both challenging yet in the context of a safe
and supportive environment. Requires at least 2 semesters in Beginning Hip Hop and
a recommendation from the teacher. Level I students see additional notes on page 8.
HIP HOP II ages 12-18: using Hip Hop aesthetics, this class is an experiential collaboration. From
warms ups to across the floor, to individual and group choreography, material is developed via
classroom discussions and themes. Dancers will practice leadership by helping design the flow of
class, assessing their own development, and creating the vision of the final performance piece
including costumes. Requires at least 2 semesters in Level I and a recommendation
an amazing experience that allows young dancers
to push the boundaries of their dancing and
ADDITIONAL ENROLLMENT NOTES FOR UPPER LEVEL &
TEEN STUDENTS. Students & parents please read, share, discuss.
Contact Katie Kruger with questions at katie@shawl-anderson.org.
Students in upper level classes have done the foundational
work to move up and experience a greater challenge. We
expect students in intermediate, advanced, youth ensemble,
and Level I, II and III to honor this accomplishment with a
solid commitment to their dancing. What does this mean?
This means:
• prioritizing attendance at dance classes; perfect attendance will offer
you the most progress in your studies; limiting absences to 3 per
semester will help us all achieve positive growth in our dance
practice over the course of the semester
• coming to class on time, ready to dance and work hard
• demonstrating respect for yourself, instructors and fellow dancers
• dancing, trying, succeeding, failing, questioning, communicating,
enjoying, discovering, connecting & honoring your accomplishments
Thank you. We look forward to dancing with you!
WHAT PARENTS & STUDENTS ARE SAYING…
“My boys are facing the peer pressures of middle school. Everything is about fitting
in, looking like everyone else, being one of the gang. But
Hip Hop with Jessica has been a counter cultural
blessing. She encourages them to be themselves, to
express themselves, to stand up and say something about
what matters to them.” – SADC
Parent
“THANK YOU, Ms Bridget, for
making Cammie's
first ballet experience so
great! She dances everywhere
now :)” – SADC Parent
