“All students are challenged to try out new things and be involved” A wide range of leadership, service and co-curricular activities are provided. All students are encouraged and expected to participate so that their talents and potential skills are developed. These opportunities provide different learning, working, celebration and recreation experiences enabling students to have a true sense of belonging within our school community. School Spirit Students all belong to one of four houses, overseen by staff and student house leaders. Competition between the four houses – Kapura (Fire), Rangi (Sky), Whenua (Earth), and Wai (Water) is strong and students quickly develop a sense of ownership and identity. Leadership and Service Students are given the opportunity through various forums to share their skills, thoughts, experiences and ideas. These experiences help develop strong relationships, build character, promote self discovery and contribute towards school pride. Junior School Opportunities for service are extensive including librarian, sound technician, ICT technician, sports monitor, science technician, writers club, environmental group, SADD member, canteen worker, and helping to produce the school magazine. Hillary Awards: Duke of Edinburgh, is available and encourages students to develop leadership skills both inside and outside the school. It is available from Year 9 through to Year 13 with bronze, silver and gold awards. Senior School Opportunities include head and deputy head students, student representative on the board of trustees, peer supporters, house leaders, SADD and environmental leaders, school magazine and committees. Students with special ability are identifi ed at all levels and encouraged to pursue specifi c interests. The College acknowledges the cultural and sporting commitment of students with Blues Awards presented annually in November. Co-curricular Activities Performing Arts Linwood has a national reputation as a performing arts school. Based on rich tradition, large and small scale productions featuring music, drama and dance offer students a wide variety of opportunities. High calibre staff encourage students to reach a very high standard of performance. Theatre Arts and Music may be taken as curriculum subjects from Year 9 through to Year 13, or as co-curricular activities. Opportunities include: School Production, Dance, Drama or Music festivals, Ensembles, Jazz Band, Lipsync, Linwood Idol, Rock Band, Choir, School Orchestra, Theatre Sports, Fashion and Wearable Arts, Kapahaka, Pasifi ka and Indian Culture Groups. Sports and Recreation Many of our students become regional, South Island or national representatives. Their individual and team successes are acknowledged in school publications, at school functions and at the annual Sports Dinner. A sport or recreational activity is compulsory for all Year 9 and 10 students, and encouraged for all other students, during Wednesday afternoon Recreation. Students participate in either inter-school or school based activities. Some sporting opportunities take place during the weekend and in our own inter-house and inter-class competitions at lunchtimes. Digital Technologies Clubs Blender - 3 D Animation, modelling and game engine development Girls Only Computing - discover Alice Programming and other applications Robotics - juniors and seniors - juniors design, build and program the NXT Robots and seniors use the Vex robots. Seniors compete once a month at Tait Communications. Programming for juniors and seniors - run in conjunction with Canterbury University for boys and girls.
