GRIMANESA AMORÓS
Grimanesa Amorós is an interdisciplinary artist with
diverse interests in the fields of social history, scientific
research and critical theory. Through her art, Amoros
convey an ephemeral wonder, entrancing the viewers
from all different backgrounds and communities to
become agents of empowerment. Her lighting installation
allows us to feel in her artwork her longtime fascination
with the intersections of sculpture, lighting, abstraction
and landscape.

The sea near Lima, Peru, where artist Grimanesa Amorós grew up,
ocean’s strong winds can cast out large quantities of sea foam onto the shoreline.
She loved to watch the foam and to play with its bubbles. These early
memories strongly influenced her, and they would find their way into the
production of her art.
Trips back to her Peruvian homeland have provided Amorós with memorable
images, including the majestic Incan ruins high in the Andes as well as the
floating islands of Lake Titicaca which is famous for floating islands that the
Uros people made entirely from thick layers of cut totora reed.
Grimanesa Amorós often has drawn upon these important Peruvian cultural
legacies for inspiration for her large-scale light-based installations. She is
also completely comfortable using the latest technologies and materials. It feels
to me as though, somewhere in the art of Grimanesa Amorós, the past is meeting
the future.

HUANCHACO
Mexico City, Mexico 2012
The pipes containing white LED lights create an intricate network
which functions as the “heart”. When the viewers stand in the midst of
Huanchaco, the lighted tubes emanate from metal domes, creating a
sheltered atmosphere within the woven tubes of light.

An installation includes various sizes islands of shimmering white bubbles.
The artist intends to convey a sense of wonder and playfulness. As visitors
walk around, they will encounter to its magic of her beloved Uros Islands in
Lake Titicaca.

Future Pass is a collateral project of the 54th International Venice Bi ennale
curated by Victoria Lu. After the Venice Biennale this exhibition will also tour
to Rotterdam's Wereldmuseum, the National Taiwan Art Museum in Taichung
and the Beijing Today Art Museum in China.

Miranda is inspired by reshapes of a natural environment which mixes images
of ancient Incan monuments, animations of the artist’s face transformed with
the lines of the torora reeds. It encourages viewers to reflect on the inestimable
impact natural environments have on human history, underlining fundamental
sources of conflict in many sparse outposts of civilization.

As a child, my mother used to take me to see the processions: masses of people
dressed In purple wound their way through the streets of Lima, evoking Images
of waves. I want viewers to see their own experiences, and to realize perhaps
some of their deeper, more unconscious attitudes vis-a-vis the visage of death.

“Reflexion Obscura” is a video about child abuse. It seeks to evoke the viewer's
empathy for the true darkness felt by an abused child. I hope to allow the feelings
of each viewer to emerge according to their own experience.In remembering the
darkness of being an injured child, they may see the light of being a healthy adult.
“ 影 射 晦 暗 ” 是 一 部 关 于 儿 童 受 虐 的 影 像 , 试 图 唤 起 观 众 对 受 虐 儿 童 所 处 阴 暗 环 境
的 共 鸣 。 我 希 望 每 一 位 观 众 联 想 到 自 身 的 经 历 。 记 住 孩 子 们 受 伤 害 的 灰 暗 , 人 们 就
会 看 到 身 为 健 康 成 人 的 光 明 。
