Flying 11s Report The Flying 11s have made a flying start as a new youth class at Northbridge bridging the gap between the Opti’s and NJs and the senior fleet. From the first Flying 11 “Top Gear” arriving for live-in last season there are now 6 active boats in the fleet with the expectation of more on the way. Ideally suited to 13 to 17 year olds, the F11s are introducing our teenagers to the thrill of three sail sailing and the challenge of managing a spinnaker down Middle Harbour in a stiff nor’easter. The introduction of the class to the club has been strongly supported by the F11 association with funding for coaching, and the provision of coaches, to get our kids started. Three boats participated in the NSW State Championship which was held in two rounds, first at MHYC then at Avalon, being River Rat (Amelia Stabback and Edward Halstead), Top Gear (Kiah Hodgkinson and Sarah Warner) and Berserk (Maxine and Michelle Malaney). Some good results were achieved in the 90+ strong fleet. Top Gear and River Rat participated in the Nationals at Belmont 16s which, with over 100+ boats on the starting line each day and 200+ teenagers on the deck between races, was teen sailing nirvana. Kiah Hodgkinson and Sarah Warner in Top Gear came away with a 3rd place on handicap for the series.
