AUTISM
April is the national month for Awareness of students (and adults) with Autism.
You would most likely be aware that there are students with Autism in all schools
who lead busy lives studying and playing like all other students. School and
socialisation can be a challenge for many of these students but they also enrich
our school community by sharing the gifts and talents they possess. Autism is a
developmental disorder that affects a person's ability to perceive and connect
with people and the world around them. Commonly referred to as autism
spectrum disorder (ASD), it has wide ranging levels of severity. More information

WORKING WITH VULNERABLE PEOPLE
The Working with Vulnerable People Act 2011 commenced on 8 November 2012,
with individuals working or volunteering in 'Activities or Services for Children'
having until 7 November 2013 to become registered. All school staff and all
people volunteering in our school must register to work with vulnerable people.
By volunteering we mean anyone helping in our class rooms and in the school in
any way; those assisting in the classroom, coming in to help with art or craft,
helping in cleaning up class rooms, those parents who help out at our sports
carnivals, yes anyone who volunteers in any way at the school must register.
Even though we all have until 7 November this year to be registered, the
Catholic Education Office wishes all volunteers to be registered as soon as
possible. There is no cost for volunteers and you register by accessing the Justice
and Community web site:-

and complete the registration form. This site also contains all the information you
will need including the explanation of what is at the heart of the Working with
Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011.
Once you have your card you will need to bring it along to school and Joan or
Anne will make a copy and place this in our WWVP file. You will also need to
have your card on you whenever you are volunteering at the school.

Enrolment time will be on us again in a few weeks. If you have a little one ready
for school in 2014 or you know of anyone interested in looking at our fantastic
school for their children, the enrolment packs will be ready for the beginning of
the new term. Our Open Day will be in Week 3 – 17 May

WINTER UNIFORM
A reminder that winter uniform is expected to be worn when we return for Term 2. We will have the usual
few weeks of change over, but students are expected to wear correct winter uniform by Week 3.
FAREWELL
Special farewell to Craig Hart who leaves our community this term to take up his position as Acting
Assistant Principal at our campus school, Mother Teresa in Harrison. We thank Craig for the
contribution he has made to our school community over the last 2 years.
Farewell also to some of our families who are moving interstate or to new areas of Canberra. We
wish you well in the future.
It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the first term for 2013 already. It has been a most productive
term where we have seen new staff and new students all settle in well and become part of the Good
Shepherd family.
I would like to wish all our families a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to your return to school
on Monday April 29 th for what I am sure will be a great Term 2.

HOLY SPIRIT PLAY GROUP
The Community Hub is a wonderful addition to Holy Spirit Primary
School. Twice a week the Hub is used for our new Play Group.
It is a fabulous new space which is fully equipped with an inside
play area (with lovely new toys), kitchen, playground and sandpit.
There is no cost involved, just come along with your child/children
aged 0-5 and enjoy making new friends together. Coffee and tea
provided but feel free to bring along something to eat.
TUESDAYS: 10.30am – 12.30pm
THURSDAYS: 9.00am – 11.00am
When you arrive, please sign the attendance book and supervise
your child/children at all times.
Good Shepherd will be holding
their Cross Country Carnival on
Friday, 10th May.

A trivia night will be held on
Thursday, 18th April at the Canberra
Irish Club for Liam Kelly.
Liam is 3yrs old and has leukaemia.
Liam and his family have moved to
Sydney so Liam can receive
treatment at the Royal Children’s
Hospital, Randwick. Come along for a
fun night to help raise much-need
funds for Liam and his family. For

Dear Parents,
The Woollies Earn and Learn Program is back on board.
We would love you to support this program once
again. Please let your extended family and friends
know that we would love all the support we can get.
We do not have any cards yet but once we receive
them we will send them out. You may keep your stickers
until we send the cards out or get the cards from a
Woollies stores.
The school has just received the last batch of teaching
resources from last year's program which included an
abundance of supplies such as Science, Art, Literacy,
Mathematics and Music resources.
We were so thankful for your support last year which
allowed us to receive so many resources that we are
sure it will be just as successful this year.

Special Lunch Order
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on
Monday 6th May, Tuesday 7th May and
Wednesday 8th May.
A letter will be sent home today containing each
families' login and password along with where and
how to log into Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO).
This will enable each family to log in and book
an interview time with each of their child/ren’s
teachers.
A computer will be available in the front office
during school hours if you do not have internet
access at home or elsewhere.
Interviews run late on Tuesday evening to cater for
those families' that need a later time slot.
Our Special Lunch Order will be held
tomorrow, Friday 12th April.
All order forms had to be returned
on Wednesday.
There will be no other lunch orders served.
During the holidays, please feel free to come to the school
and use the playground and courts.
The more people we have around the school the less likely
we are to have any vandalism!
Uniforms for Sale
One of our families who has just arrived this
year is moving back overseas, has Size 6 girls
Summer and Winter Uniform to sell. For more

Attached to the newsletter is a timetable for
Bus Route 432 and 608. This bus drops off and
picks up on Horse Park Drive at Amaroo
School.
We have spoken to ACTION asking them to
include Good Shepherd to their timetable.
Action has advised us they will review the
timetable if we have enough students to
make this viable. If your children would use
these Bus Routes please complete the slip
and return to school no later than tomorrow,
Friday 12th April.

Week 2 of grading games for all Good
Shepherd netball teams. This is what the
coaches had to say!
Yr 5/6 SNOW: Canberra - watch out for
SNOW! Our girls were superb on Saturday
winning both of their matches. I am
especially proud of their team spirit because
even when they were losing at half time in
their 2nd game, they came back fighting
and won. Special thanks to all the awesome
family support, it meant a great deal to the
girls.
Yr 4 CYCLONES: The Cyclones had a great
second week of netball and played two fast
paced games with all girls playing extremely
well and with enthusiasm. It was great to
record our first goal of the season and there
was plenty more scored on the day.
Well done!
Yr 4 STORMS: Yr 4 Storms had two great
games and even managed to keep their
opposition scoreless in their second grading
game! The team is really starting to work well
together and their enthusiasm is wonderful to
see. Thanks to our coaches, Georgia and
Jessica and our umpires Chloe and
Angelina. Go Storms!
Yr 3 TSUNAMIS: The Good Shepherd Tsunamis
had a great day. The first game they won
against the NGRC Wallabies. The second
game against the Mac Diamonds our little
Tsunamis were up against some older
girls. We were very proud of them all as they
played like a little team! Thanks to our
umpires and all the parents helping the girls
and supporting them in their positions.
Yr 2 LIGHTNING: On Saturday the Lightning
team played two grading games. The girls
were excited to be playing again and it was
with great eagerness they took the court.
Every one played extremely well, as their
games progressed the girls continued to
develop their skills and grow in confidence.
A fantastic effort girls.
YR 1 HURRICANES: Our little Hurricanes were
red hot in defence this week with Jess putting
her body on the line for the team, more goals
were scored and sometimes the ball went in
the right direction! Little champs in the
making. Go Hurricanes!!
Winter School Uniform
Just a reminder, all children should be wearing the correct
Good Shepherd Winter Uniform when they return on
Monday, 29th April
Girls should be wearing either the Canberra Catholic
School Pinafore or navy unisex pants; navy blue
stockings or socks, pale blue skivvy or long sleeve polo shirt
with school logo and navy fleece with school logo.
The boys should be in navy unisex long trousers, navy
socks, long sleeve polo shirt with school logo and navy
fleece with school logo.
Please note fleecy pants are not official uniform and
are not to be worn.
If the children wear a Parka or Windcheater to school it
must be plain Navy. Children may wear the school beanie
instead of the legionaries hat during winter.
Beanies and hats may be purchased at the front
office - $6.50 each.
Black leather shoes or boots must be worn with the school
uniform. No Lynx shoes or black runners. A note of
explanation from the parent must be provided if your child
deviates from the expected uniform.
Jewellery, including necklaces and rubber charity bands
and bracelets must not be worn to school.
The only jewellery items which may be worn to school are a
watch and STUD earrings.
(No sleepers, hoops, loops or dangles).
A uniform dress code reinforces in students a pride in
their appearance, instils recognition of themselves as an
integral part of the school community, and assists in
developing pride in representing their school.

Mothers Day Stall
The Mother’s Day Stall will be held at school on
Thursday 9 May 2013
Each child is asked to donate a gift valued at no more than $5.
The gift should be delivered to the front office via the class
note bags by no later than Monday, 6 May 2013 so the
wonderful parents who help put this event together for the
children can get organized for the day of the stall.
The children will attend the stall with their class during the day.
Each child will be able to purchase a gift for their mother or
special person in their life for just $2.
So, let's get shopping for all the wonderful Good Shepherd Mums
