How Do I get Financial Aid?
Students and parents will use the FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid) to apply for financial
aid to help supplement the cost of post-secondary
education.
The earliest seniors can apply is Jan. 1, 2012.
At this time, students and parents can get a pin
number at www.pin.ed.gov that will be used as a signature
for the online FAFSA.
Parents can then attend “Fill out the FAFSA” sessions
on Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. or on
Saturday, March 31 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Financial Aid advisors will be available to work with
parents to complete the financial aid application.
Senior Talks
During the month of November each senior will
meet with his/her counselor in an one-to-one talk to
make sure seniors are on track for graduation and future
plans.
The counselor and student will discuss current
grades and credits. We also will review future plans
and discuss steps that need to be taken. Parents and/
or guardians will receive a letter listing the results of the
interview.
Then Kristie Sulak and Mildred Anaele, College/Career
Facilitators, will follow up with seniors to verify they
have completed applications for college, scholarships,
and financial aid.
With everyone on the same page and working together,
we help to make these exciting events successful
for everyone.
National Hispanic Scholars
Four students were recognized by the National Recognition
Program. Shown are, from left, Pedro Cervantes,
Samantha Chapa, Principal Dr. Vera Wehring,
Kristina Klock and Jose Salazar.
The National Hispanic Recognition Program announced
that four students from B.F. Terry High School
were recognized as award recipients.
Samantha Chapa, Kristina Klock and Jose Salazar
were selected for the 2011-12 National Hispanic Recognition
Program as scholars, and Pedro Cervantes received
an honorable mention.
The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding
Hispanic/Latino high school students. Nearly 5,000
students were selected from a pool of over 235,000 students
who took the 2010 PSAT/NMSQT/PAA and identified
themselves as Hispanic/Latino.
Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are designated
as scholars, and those with GPAs of 3.0 to 3.49 are designated
as Honorable Mentions.
Postive Impact Award
Kaitlin Noser was
awarded the 2011 Triple-
Impact Competitor Scholarship
Award by the Positive
Coaching Alliance. Noser
received a $2,000 scholarship
as well as a standing
ovation from the capacity
crowd.
“There were 30 finalists,
and they only gave out
10 awards,” Noser said.
She was quite surprised
when her name was the
eighth one called. The
scholarships were based
on being a student athlete,
involvement in school and
community service.
Noser qualified for the
scholarship by writing an
essay and undergoing an
interview with the scholarship
committee.
The breakfast and
awards ceremony were
held at the Omni Hotel’s
Grand Salon. The KUBE’s
Todd Freed served as
master of ceremonies and
Sam Hinkie, Executive Vice
President of Basketball
Operations for the Houston
Rockets, gave the keynote
address.
Noser is the daughter
of Jeff and Lisa Noser of
Richmond. She is a member
of the volleyball, swimming
and water polo teams
as well as a member of the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
and Peer Assistance
Leadership, PALs.
She was also the “Student
of the Week” for the
Houston Chronicle’s “This
Week.”
Last year, our students took a
public stand against a problem that
has plagued the country – bullying.
The United Students Against Bullying
started with a few dedicated
teens and has now grown to having
hundreds sign an anti-bullying
pledge.
This issue’s cover is a picture
of the students who joined together
to sign the pledge.
The photo represents just a
fraction of the students at Terry High
who are focusing on making positive
choices.
Through the USAB, and many
other organizations and clubs, our
students are dedicating themselves
to making good grades and good
choices.
We saw that dedication in our
students’ involvement in the districtwide
food drive where we collected
boxes of non-perishables for the
most needy in our community.
That dedication is evident in
the hours of practice our students
give to the band in after-school
practice, commitment that resulted
in top honors at UIL competition.
We see practice and determination
pay off in the hours our
students willingly give to our fall
musical, “Hairspray,” where they’ve
been singing and dancing since the
summer.
Our ROTC and FFA students
put in countless hours on the weekends
to make sure the community
knows how proud we are of our
school and our achievements.
Monday through Thursday, the
library is filled with students going
the extra academic mile alongside
teachers who are providing that
extra bit of tutoring to make sure we
all achieve our academic goals.
Remind your teen that the
counselors, teachers and administrators
are here to help them
through difficult times, and clubs like
the USAB and the Ranger Saver
Program can help alert someone in
authority about a situation before it
reaches the boiling-over point.
Please encourage your son or
daughter to continue making good
choices and to not bring outside
differences into the school because
they interfere with learning.
We are encouraging making
good choices and then acting
on those positive commitments as
those are the stair steps to success.
Please communicate with us
about any concerns you may have
– all teacher emails are listed on our
Website, www.lcisd.org, and grades
are also posted there.
We love seeing our parents at
our athletic events, fine arts performances
and volunteering at Terry.
Please contact me, another administrator
or a teacher if you’d like to
volunteer or if you have any questions
or concerns.
As we gear up for the end
of the semester, we know we are
headed in the right direction toward
academic and personal growth for
our students.
Copies of transcripts
are available in the registrar’s
office at Terry High School.
A transcript includes the semester
grades and available
standardized testing information
(TAKS, PSAT, PLAN,
SAT, ACT) for a student
while enrolled in high school.
Transcripts are permanently
kept for any student who
attended Terry High School
and earned semester grades.
There are two types of
transcripts: official and unofficial.
Official transcripts have
been signed, stamped, and
are in a sealed envelope.
Colleges and most employers
require official transcripts.
Unofficial transcripts are
open.
Requests for transcripts
must be made in writing — in
person on the form available,
by fax (832-223-3411), or
by email (bteykl@lcisd.org).
This is to ensure the confidentiality
of the document
and request.
Also, once a person
is 18 years old and out of
school, parents can no
longer request transcripts for
their child; the person must
make his/her own request.
If someone other than the
requester is to pick it up, we
must have written permission
from the requester.
There is no charge for
this service, and multiple
copies (within reason!) of a
transcript can be requested.
For example, if a student
knows he/she will apply to
five colleges, request five
official and one unofficial
transcripts. However, 24-hour
notice must be given for the
request.
If you have any questions
about transcripts
or VOEs, please contact
Brenda Teykl, the registrar, at
832-223-3420.
VOE (Verification of Enrollment)
• Needed by Department of Public Safety each time
you visit their office for learner’s permit or driver’s
license renewal until age 18
• Blank forms are in registrar’s office
• Student signs form and leaves it in box
• Mrs. Teykl completes forms daily before school is
dismissed
• Call 832-223-3420 for more information.
The 2011-12 Yearbook is...
ALL COLOR!!
Yes, that’s right! For the first time in Terry
history, the 2011-12 yearbook is an all-color books
-- pictures, sports, choir - all color! Best of all, the
price stays the same - $65. The book covers all the
highlights of the year from Homecoming to Spirit
Week to class photos. The yearbook will arrive in
May so students can have their friends sign in the
book, and a summer supplement (that fits right in
the book) wraps up the end-of-the-year events.
You can order your ALL-COLOR yearbook
return for permission to participate in the groups.
For many years, LCISD has contracted with DePelchin’s Children Center
to provide free counseling services for our students. The DePelchin
S.T.A.R. Program conducts small, short-term counseling groups during the
school day with our Terry students. The groups meet once a week (approximately
45 minutes) for several weeks.
In past years, the DePelchin Therapists have conducted counseling groups
on the topics of anger management, impulse control, healthy and unhealthy
coping skills, dealing with grief and more. The THS staff is asked
to help us identify students who may benefit from these sessions. Then,
the students are given a packet for their parent/guardian to complete and
In addition to group counseling, DePelchin therapists counsel students individually on a wide range of issues. If
you feel your child is in need of group or individual counseling, please contact your child’s counselor.
