Summer Math Activities Students Entering Grade 5
Get ready to discover mathematics all around you this summer. Just as we encourage students to
continue reading during the summer, regular practice of math facts, problem solving and other math
concepts will maintain the math skills you acquired during the school year.
Attached you will find a calendar for July and August with a range of problems, activities and websites
with online activities. The IXL website will be available for the entire summer.
We suggest that you and your child use the calendars to spread practice over the summer. We
encourage you to complete at least 15 math days each month. After completing an activity, color or X
the box on the chart. A blank grid is provided for recording answers. Many of the online activities are
great to do again and again. Some activities are designed to be done with a partner, and will provide
good opportunities to talk about math thinking and strategies.
Fact practice is essential. Students are expected to have mastered their addition, subtraction and
multiplication and division facts by fifth grade. Short frequent practice is most effective.
Please return the sheets to the fifth grade teacher on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 28,
2013.
Have a wonderful, mathematical summer!
