The high school setting allowed the Society to build on its annual UnCommon Law conference, a key Equity Office initiative that brings together young people, lawyers, judges and social workers to discuss current legal issues. “Learning is not a spectator sport” is a key motto at Auburn High, and Law Day was good evidence of just how seriously students take their responsibility to learn. Long before the event, the student council and the school’s Youth of Today group collaborated closely with the Society and professional facilitator Becky Colwell to plan the program of sessions, which were designed to be interactive. Council also conducted its regular agenda of Society business, so students could observe how the provincial regulatory group operates. At one point, during a vesting ceremony for departing Council members who were completing their terms, music students provided a riveting drumming accompaniment. It was the final meeting of the year for the group, before the newly elected Council began its duties in June, and students had a chance to witness some important decisions being made. Key agenda items included a comprehensive review of Professional Responsibility activity, as well as adoption of a new communications strategy, which aims to strengthen the Society’s connections with the public. The final order of business was an NSBS scholarship, presented by Pink to the school. Student Alyson Reid was the recipient of the scholarship, handed out during the June 25 graduation ceremony. “It’s very important that we build a relationship between lawyers and the community,” explains Pink. “Considering our mandate is to uphold and protect the public interest in the practice of law, this is a good way to ensure people know what we do and also to give us a better understanding of public concerns in relation to the administration of justice.” 26 The Society Record
