Simpson Professorship in Accounting Our accounting department’s first endowed professorship, which honors professor Richard H. Simpson, represents the collective generosity of hundreds of accounting alumni and their employers. Spinney, Jr. ’87. “He’s made a huge positive difference to thousands of students and through their education he’s created tremendous intellectual capital for their firms.” In November 2007 Spinney and former Isenberg School undergraduate dean and Ph.D. accounting graduate Dennis Hanno ’90 Ph.D. decided to make the Simpson professorship—the school’s first endowed professorship in accounting—a reality by mobilizing the school’s accounting alumni and making lead gifts of their own. Spinney’s own substantial gift provided initial financial leverage that helped the school’s development director, Ed Brozman, engage hundreds of alumni in the initiative—The Richard H. Simpson Professorship in Accounting. By the end of June, accounting alumni had contributed $1 million toward the $1.5 million professorship. “One reason why Dick was such a great professor was his own ‘real time’ research into new and evolving accounting John N. Spinney, Jr. ’87 standards,” recalls Spinney, who is COO and CFO of the Boston based investment firm, Bracebridge Capital, LLC. “We’d discuss and learn in real time how to implement new standards while they were being approved by the FASB. Anyone who has taken intermediate or advanced accounting with Dick knows first hand the value that he added to their skill set before leaving UMass. Joseph Floyd ’83 “Without question, Professor Simpson played an incredibly special role in making me realize how fulfilling a career as a CPA could be. I actually took only one class with Dick Simpson, but it was as inspirational and memorable as any class that I’ve taken before or since,” recalls Isenberg School accounting alumnus Joseph Floyd ’83. “In that course— Advanced Accounting—Dick brought not only remarkable energy and insight to the subject, but he also displayed a true passion for the importance of financial reporting”, reminisces Floyd, who was one of the founders of Huron Consulting Group in 2002, a company that now employees over 2000 people. “The course also offered five-hour exams on Friday nights—great preparation for the CPA exam but also somewhat of a loss to one’s social life.” Last February, Floyd and his wife Janet ’86 made a key gift to the Isenberg School’s campaign to create its first endowed faculty position in accounting, the Richard H. Simpson Professorship in Accounting. “For me, Dick’s influence went way beyond the classroom,” Floyd continues. “As a young public accountant in Boston, I reached out to Dick to discuss my career and get his advice, including the benefits of going to law school.” Floyd went on to earn a J.D. degree from Suffolk University and to specialize professionally in the nascent field that combined accounting with litigation and forensics. He later served as the partner in charge of Arthur Andersen’s Financial Consulting practice in New England. Although McGladrey & Pullen is the 5th largest accounting firm—right behind the Big 4—it focuses on middle market clients with revenue in the $100 million to $1 billion range. “Our scholarship is reserved for a sophomore who seeks a career in public accounting focusing on middle market companies,” notes McNamara. In the last five years, outstanding students with those aspirations have made the UMass Amherst campus an attractive recruiting destination for McGladrey & Pullen, with McNamara leading the recruiting initiative. Each year the firm has offered internships and hired two to three graduating seniors. The growing UMass Amherst and Isenberg School network at McGladrey & Pullen in its Boston office includes two directors and another ten staff professionals. Many others, he adds, are employed with the firm in its offices around the globe. “Next year, with greater participation in the scholarship from members of that network, I expect the award to grow,” predicts McNamara.
