By 1900 Shugio had returned to Tokyo to enter
government service as a member of the imperial
commission in charge of overseas Japanese art exhibitions.
He appeared there in the role of guide and
confidant to Frank Lloyd Wright (who erroneously
On the occasion of the Grolier Club's 1896 print
Lord, Day and Taylor until his death at age eighty-
was prominent in the cultural life of New York City
for fifty years. His association with the Metropolitan
Museum began in 1891, when he was elected a fellow
for life. He became a trustee in gog9, the year of the
photograph in Figure 24, and served as treasurer un-
til 1921. Mansfield may have come to Japanese art
through his first love, Whistler. In fact, he had one of
only two comprehensive collections of Whistler etch-
ings and lithographs-the other belonged to Charles
Freer, whom he had introduced to Whistler's work.
