THE GOLDEN TOUCH<br />

Clogau was launched in 1994 by William Roberts, who acquired the historic<br />

Welsh gold mine five years earlier with the intention of turning it into<br />

a tourist attraction. After discovering there was some gold left, the mine<br />

reopened until 1998 and a small stockpile of gold was amassed. Soon after,<br />

the jewellery line was launched with each piece containing a touch of the<br />

rare Welsh Clogau gold.<br />

Clogau has an intrinsic history with the royal family.<br />

The Queen Mother used Clogau gold for her wedding<br />

ring, and in doing so set the tradition for subsequent<br />

royals to use Welsh gold for their wedding bands.<br />

Both the Kensington Key pendant (£99, page 67)<br />

and the Kensington Key Locket (£139, page 67) call<br />

on a traditional Victorian romantic style and take their<br />

inspiration from the 19 th century palace gates of Kensington Palace (made<br />

famous as the home of Queen Victoria, Diana, Princess of Wales and the<br />

At the height of the New Romanticism trend in the mid-1980s, Simon<br />

Carter took a life-changing career turn when he created a pewter brooch<br />

and sold it to an innovative jewellery store on King’s Road.<br />

The ambitious designer went on to launch his eponymous company in<br />

1985, which focused on offering unconventional cufflinks as an alternative<br />

to the largely conservative ones available at the time.<br />

Watches, shirts, suiting and accessories followed,<br />

and the brand has now developed into a global<br />

menswear and accessories brand, stocked in<br />

over 40 countries.<br />

It was a natural progression for the<br />

company to introduce women’s<br />

jewellery, and Carter’s fashionforward<br />

pieces were met with rave reviews. Crystalembossed<br />

skull pendants, mermaid necklaces and edgy<br />

fly brooches are mixed in with motherof-pearl<br />

owl pendants, platinum-plated<br />

crystal heart studs and tactile haematite<br />

bracelets with heart charms.<br />

Links of London was born in 1990 after Annoushka Ducas was asked<br />

to make fish-shaped cufflinks as gifts for a catering business. Having made<br />

too many, she decided on a whim to show them to Harvey Nichols, which<br />

agreed to stock them if she produced more. They flew off the shelves.<br />

Links of London has flourished to become one of Britain’s leading<br />

jewellery houses, renowned for affordable and inventive<br />

items. One such item is the 20/20 Interlocking<br />

Necklace, which features two stunning, sterling-silver<br />

interlocking rings that symbolise the eternal cycle of life<br />

and the unbreakable bond of love.<br />

As its name suggests, this company’s roots are firmly<br />

embedded in England’s capital city, so it should come<br />

as no surprise that Links of London was chosen to<br />

design the official jewellery for London 2012. The collection of gold and<br />

silver charms, pendants, cufflinks and bracelets are adaptations of the brand’s<br />

A MAN’S WORLD<br />

After seven years of working as a city financier, Robert Tateossian was<br />

looking for a new venture. He came up with a line of silver accessories<br />

for men, and employed a workshop in Birmingham — the heart of<br />

England’s silver industry — to make them.<br />

The Tateossian brand debuted in 1990 to acclaim with a selection of<br />

sterling-silver cufflinks, which continue to be at the<br />

heart of each seasonal collection. As well as gold and<br />

silver, the company is renowned for its use of innovative<br />

materials. Many pieces feature fibreoptic glass, while the<br />

Gear cufflinks, sold on board, employ mechanics such as<br />

rotating cogs and gears and all-moving parts.<br />

Tatteossian’s unique style has revolutionised<br />

the cufflink industry, gaining him three UK<br />

<strong>British</strong> Export Awards for Accessories. Now a market leader in<br />

creating men’s jewellery, including the popular<br />

leather bracelet (£79, page 70), he has<br />

built up a celebrity following over the<br />

years, including Jamie Cullum and<br />

It’s a big year for Stella McCartney. Not<br />

only has she created the Adidas sportswear<br />

for the <strong>British</strong> Olympic and Paralympic<br />

teams for London 2012, she also held her first<br />

show for 16 years at London Fashion Week<br />

in February, has a new flagship store opening<br />

in South Kensington, and has just launched<br />

a brand-new fragrance — the simply named<br />

L.I.L.Y. Not bad for a 40-year-old mother of<br />

four children all under the age of six.<br />

But then, the second child of Sir Paul and<br />

Linda McCartney has always had a strong work<br />

ethic. Ever since she graduated from Central<br />

St Martins in 1995, she’s been determined to<br />

succeed through her own merits – often having<br />

to shake off accusations of her achievement<br />

being down to her family name.<br />

Appointed creative director of Parisian fashion<br />

house Chloé in 1997, she quickly proved her<br />

talent, taking the design<br />

house to new levels,<br />

before setting up her own<br />

eponymous label in 2001.<br />

She famously designed<br />

Madonna’s wedding dress<br />

for her nuptials to Guy<br />

Ritchie, has collaborated<br />

with artists from Jeff<br />

Koons to Gary Hume, launched Stella Kids in<br />

2010, and has a shelf-full of coveted awards.<br />

Any designer worth their salt sooner or later<br />

dips his or her perfectly-shod feet into the heady<br />

world of scent and Stella’s first foray came with<br />

Stella, launched to wide acclaim in 2003.<br />

A delicious marriage of rose and grey amber,<br />

nearly a decade on it’s still going strong.<br />

Today, however, we’re here to talk about the<br />

latest string in her bow, her second fragrance,<br />

L.I.L.Y. Dressed slickly in her own designs and<br />

killer heels, she looks fresh-faced and relaxed,<br />

and talks enthusiastically about the new scent,<br />

which took three years to create with perfumer<br />

Jacques Cavallier.<br />

We meet in a room with walls that have been<br />

covered in moss — a nod to L.I.L.Y’s earthy<br />

undertones and the key role Mother Nature<br />

played in inspiring the perfume. As the name<br />

suggests, lily of the valley comprises the<br />

top notes, with depth given by black truffles<br />

from the Perigord region of France. Touchingly,<br />

Stella tells me, ‘Lily’ was also Sir Paul’s<br />

nickname for his late wife Linda — short for<br />

‘Linda, I love you’.<br />

Growing up on an organic farm with siblings<br />

Mary, James and half-sister Heather, Stella<br />

enjoyed an outdoorsy childhood, riding horses<br />

and raising sheep, far from the mad whirl of<br />

celebrity life. Her love of nature shines through<br />

when she talks about L.I.L.Y.<br />

“I grew up in the English countryside and<br />

I remember lily of the valley growing in shady<br />

places,”she says. “I find it breathtakingly<br />

beautiful — it’s a very innocent-looking flower,<br />

with a real freshness and femininity, which I<br />

wanted to bring to the fragrance.<br />

“One of the challenges I faced was that it’s<br />

thought of as an old-fashioned flower, no one<br />

really uses it any more,” Stella continues.<br />

“For me, it was important to break down these<br />

preconceptions.”<br />

With the feminine side of the perfume decided<br />

upon, Stella was determined to bring in a darker,<br />

balancing masculine note. Moss, which grows<br />

alongside lily of the valley, was introduced with<br />

other earthy elements, but the lightbulb moment<br />

came in a restaurant in Paris one autumn.<br />

“It was truffle season. I just thought that<br />

truffle is the best smell, the missing link in<br />

the perfume, the missing masculinity I’d been<br />

searching for. It’s sexy.”<br />

The fact that lily of the valley appears only<br />

briefly in spring, and truffles are found only in<br />

the autumn adds to the romance of the scent.<br />

“I love the idea of trying to capture a fleeting<br />

moment. I love that both lily of the valley and<br />

truffles come out at only<br />

one time during the year.”<br />

One sniff and it’s clear<br />

that this is indeed a scent<br />

that evokes the freshness<br />

of spring coupled with the<br />

earthiness of autumn. It’s<br />

light yet sultry, with other<br />

elements adding depth to<br />

the core mix — from the spice of black pepper,<br />

to the woody accents of patuchouli and the<br />

lightly musky sweetness of ambrette seeds.<br />

Of course, being a perfectionist, Stella was<br />

involved in the whole production process,<br />

from creating the scent alongside Jacques —<br />

“I brought the innocence, he has the expertise”<br />

— to designing the bottle and packaging, and<br />

finally shooting the very natural ad campaign,<br />

which was staged in the Kent countryside.<br />

The box is beautiful in its simplicity, while<br />

the bottle is a work of art in itself. Made from<br />

real cut glass and a metal frame, the bottle<br />

has a weight and timelessness that was carefully<br />

thought out by its designer.<br />

“It’s important to me to create something<br />

beautiful, something you<br />

don’t just want to throw<br />

away,” says Stella. “With<br />

a square metal frame and<br />

the contrasting oval inside,<br />

it’s bringing the<br />

masculine and<br />

the feminine<br />

together once<br />

again, too.”<br />

It seems,<br />

of creating<br />

Holding back the hands of time doesn’t<br />

have to mean resorting to plastic surgery,<br />

says Rebecca Howard-Dennis<br />

When a basic cleanse, tone and moisturise no longer cuts the mustard,<br />

but ‘fillers and freezers’ aren’t an option, it could be time to invest in<br />

cosmeceuticals. A relatively recent addition to the beauty business,<br />

cosmeceuticals are a new generation of anti-ageing products that combine<br />

cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This hybrid approach harnesses biologically<br />

active ingredients that purport to have medical or drug-like benefits.<br />

“It is the perfect marriage, in product form, of cosmetic and<br />

medical science,” explains Rosalind Chapman, Transformulas<br />

MD and Company Founder. “Cosmeceuticals are a natural<br />

progression for women who are looking for that something<br />

extra from their skin care and want benefits that go beyond a<br />

traditional, hydrating moisturiser.”<br />

For Chapman, the creation of the Transformulas brand<br />

was born out of her personal need to find a bona fide<br />

alternative to invasive procedures.<br />

A confessed needle-phobic, she felt that there had to be a more<br />

gentle and, most importantly, effective topical solution to ageing.<br />

In the late 1990s, she started to investigate the alternatives, using her<br />

background as a distributor for a natural skin care company and a beauty buyer<br />

for House of Fraser department store to create topical skin care that occupied<br />

the niche between product and procedure. The resulting Transformulas brand<br />

was eventually founded in 2003.<br />

“Truthfully, I never set out to create a business,” she says. “It was a purely<br />

selfish project of mine, but it soon<br />

became clear that there was a real<br />

demand for beauty without surgery.”<br />

Chapman points out that her<br />

products do not, and cannot, provide<br />

like-for-like results when compared to<br />

dermatological and surgical procedures.<br />

“We don’t have a magic bullet to<br />

prevent or reverse ageing, but our<br />

products are formulated with the finest natural ingredients to alleviate natural<br />

and secondary ageing, resulting in instant results, semi-permanent effects and<br />

long-term benefits.”<br />

While the average Transformulas customer is 35-plus and looking<br />

to improve skin elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles, Chapman says the<br />

range has also attracted a younger following thanks in part to those ‘instant’<br />

results. “All of the products work with an individual’s body, so a 20-year-old with<br />

very fast cell turnover will see different results from that of a 50-year-old, but<br />

everyone will see an improvement within 30 days.”<br />

Transformulas products take up to three years to develop and Chapman<br />

works with chemists from around the world to finesse her formulas, which utilise<br />

the very latest biological active ingredients.<br />

With a body care line in the pipeline and plans to branch out into foreign<br />

domestic markets starting with the Middle East later this year,<br />

it seems Transformulas’ message of skin care over surgery is finally poised to<br />

There’s no better match for the Great <strong>British</strong><br />

Summer, says GQ drinks editor Jonathan Ray<br />

An ice-cold glass of Pimm’s is as<br />

English as strawberries and cream,<br />

village cricket, Royal Ascot, Henley,<br />

Wimbledon, and Glastonbury. Its very<br />

name is synonymous with summer and<br />

whether we have a scorcher or a washout<br />

this year, I reckon the only way to pass the<br />

time in any semblance of comfort is with a<br />

brimming jug of Pimm’s ‘No.1 Cup’.<br />

I’ve drunk buckets<br />

of the stuff over the<br />

years, from pint<br />

tankards in draughty,<br />

rain-sodden wedding<br />

marquees; from<br />

cut-glass Champagne<br />

flutes on the lawn at Glyndebourne; from<br />

chipped supermarket glasses on Brighton<br />

beach and even neat from filthy sherry<br />

glasses in a fly-blown, Fawlty Towers-like<br />

country hotel (it was the barman’s first day<br />

and — as I later discovered — his last).<br />

Everyone has their own favourite<br />

way of mixing and serving Pimm’s, with<br />

measurements, quantities and additions<br />

guarded as tightly as we do those for our<br />

own particular Bloody Mary. The recipe for<br />

what’s in the bottle itself is as secret now<br />

as when it was created in 1840 by James<br />

Pimm, a shellfish-monger and oyster barowner<br />

in London.<br />

In those days, vile-tasting, rough-as-canbe<br />

gin was the Londoner’s drink of choice,<br />

but Pimm felt his customers deserved<br />

something better. He thus came up with<br />

a gin-based ‘No.1 Cup’, blending it to his<br />

own recipe and selling it in pint tankards.<br />

Pimm’s potion soon became as<br />

celebrated as his oyster bars, which had<br />

become a small chain in the city. By the<br />

1860s, Pimm’s ‘No.1 Cup’ was being sold<br />

throughout London for three shillings a<br />

bottle, and by the 1890s, it was exported<br />

as far afield as India and Ceylon and even<br />

sent to slake the thirst of the troops at<br />

Omdurman and Khartoum. Since then,<br />

the brand has passed through many hands<br />

and is now owned by drinks giant Diageo.<br />

Pimm’s is still made in the same way<br />

and to the same secret recipe, known only<br />

to six people. So precious is this formula<br />

that the six aren’t even allowed to journey<br />

together in case something happens and<br />

it is lost forever. All that Diageo will admit<br />

to is that Pimm’s ‘No.1 Cup’ is a blend<br />

of herbs and spices with<br />

a base of Gordon’s Gin<br />

(which Diageo also owns).<br />

In the 1930s, Pimm’s<br />

created a number of other<br />

fruit cups — a Scotch<br />

whisky-based one (‘No.2<br />

Cup’); a brandy one (‘No.3 Cup’); a rum<br />

one (‘No.4 Cup’); a rye whisky one (‘No.5<br />

Cup’) and a vodka one (‘No.6 Cup’).<br />

Apart from the main ‘No.1 Cup’ (of<br />

which more than 300,000 cases are sold<br />

a year), only the vodka-based ‘No.6 Cup’<br />

remains (because the then-chairman’s<br />

wife liked it) along with ‘No.3 Cup’ which,<br />

having been discontinued, was resurrected<br />

a few years back as ‘Pimm’s Winter’.<br />

The classic serve is one part Pimm’s to<br />

three parts lemonade with plenty of ice<br />

and sliced strawberries, cucumber, orange,<br />

lemon, apple and mint.<br />

I have to say that I don’t care for all this<br />

vegetation, which invariably leads to me<br />

spilling it all down my shirt as I try to take<br />

a gulp without choking on a strawberry or<br />

getting mint stuck between my teeth. In<br />

my view, it’s better served with plenty of ice<br />

and a couple of slices of lemon.<br />

Neat Pimm’s is 25 per cent alcohol<br />

by volume (ABV), but the classic serve<br />

comes in at about 5.4 per cent ABV, which<br />

is more or less the same as a premium<br />

lager. You can also use Prosecco instead<br />

of lemonade and, if you like it drier, use<br />

ginger ale.<br />

But whichever way it comes, enjoy!<br />

1 INTRODUCTION<br />

These Terms and Conditions are published by Tourvest Duty Free (UK) Ltd (“TDF”, “we”, “us”) on<br />

behalf of <strong>British</strong> <strong>Airways</strong> Plc (“BA”) and may be varied in accordance with clause 12. TDF is a<br />

company registered in England and Wales (Company number 05034988 [VAT number<br />

GB 832756514]). If you have any comments or questions about any aspect of <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong>,<br />

please contact us using the methods shown in our Enquiries and Returns section above.<br />

2 PLACING AN ORDER<br />

2.1 To purchase <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> goods (the “Goods”), just ask a crew member once the <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> service commences on board (a “Request”). A Request is an offer by you which, if<br />

accepted by us, becomes a legally binding agreement.<br />

2.2 We reserve the right to decline any Request.<br />

2.3 You are responsible for accurately specifying the terms of your Request. If, due to any<br />

variation in price of the Goods, the price of the Goods is different from that set out in your<br />

Request, we will discuss this with you prior to processing your order in accordance with clause<br />

2.2 above.<br />

2.4 Goods are sold for personal use only and not for resale.<br />

3 PRODUCT AVAILABILITY AND DESCRIPTIONS<br />

3.1 We take care to ensure that all product information and pricing in respect of the Goods<br />

featured in the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> magazines are accurate. However, our Goods are continually<br />

updated and the images, specifications and prices may change. The representation of colours<br />

in the magazine may vary from the actual colours. Goods shown may not be to scale and we<br />

are unable to guarantee their size. Products are propped for size and to show usage — unless<br />

specified, props are not included.<br />

3.2 All Goods are subject to availability.<br />

4 ERRORS & OMISSIONS<br />

We have made reasonable endeavours to ensure the information is correct at the time of<br />

writing. Any typographical, clerical or other error or omission in the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> magazines<br />

shall be subject to correction without any liability on our part.<br />

5 PRICE<br />

5.1 The price of the Goods will be the price set out in the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> magazine (or such<br />

price as otherwise notified to you in accordance with clause 2.2).<br />

5.2 We reserve the right to change the prices quoted in the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> magazine at any<br />

time. Where used, ‘RRP’ means the recommended retail price on the high street in the UK.<br />

5.3 Prices for Goods in the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> magazines are shown in £sterling (GBP) and, where<br />

applicable, are inclusive of UK VAT. You will be liable for any import duties and local sales<br />

taxes that may be levied in the country of delivery.<br />

5.4 Card payments will appear on your payment card statement as “<strong>British</strong> <strong>Airways</strong> (Inflight)<br />

Retail”. Transactions will be effected in £sterling (GBP) and may be converted by your card<br />

issuer into your home currency.<br />

6 CARD PAYMENTS<br />

By presenting us with a payment card or details thereof, you confirm that (i) your use of the<br />

card to pay for Goods specified in the Request is authorised and (ii) that you authorise us to take<br />

payment of the full price of the Goods and all other amounts due such as delivery charges. We<br />

will confirm such other amounts with you by telephone or email prior to taking payment.<br />

7 RETURNS AND CANCELLATIONS<br />

Unwanted goods<br />

7.1 Subject to clause 7.4, we will refund or exchange any unwanted Goods within 1 month of<br />

your receipt of them provided that you notify us of your intention within that time.<br />

Faulty goods<br />

7.2 Subject to clause 7.4, if when you receive them Goods are faulty or are not as described,<br />

we will offer you:<br />

7.2.1 if you notify us within 1 month of receipt: the choice between a full refund, repair or<br />

replacement; or<br />

7.2.2 if you notify us between 1 month and 6 months following receipt: either a repair or a<br />

replacement.<br />

7.3 Please note that Goods shall not be considered faulty where a defect is due to wear and<br />

tear or wilful damage by or negligence of anyone other than us, our contractors or agents.<br />

(UK time). <strong>High</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Shop</strong> operates on all BA flights excluding domestic and<br />

certain short European flights.<br />

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR HIGH LIFE SHOP<br />

7.4 For returns under clauses 7.1 to 7.3, we must receive the Goods back<br />

from you:<br />

(a) within 7 days of your notification;<br />

(b) with the original receipt or delivery note;<br />

(c) with a covering letter (specifying your order number, order date, delivery address, contact<br />

details, details of the fault (if any) and whether you require a refund/exchange/repair as<br />

applicable); and, in the case of returns under 7.1, the Goods must be:<br />

(d) in an unused condition with their original packaging intact.<br />

7.5 We are not responsible for returned Goods that are lost or damaged in transit. Proof of<br />

postage is not proof of receipt by/delivery to us. You should take reasonable care to ensure that<br />

the Goods returned are not damaged in transit and if appropriate arrange suitable insurance.<br />

7.6 We will refund you the reasonable costs, excluding courier costs, of safe delivery of Goods<br />

back to us other than in the case of:<br />

8 LIABILITY<br />

care owed to you by us.<br />

8.2 We have the right to suspend or cancel our obligations (without liability to you) in whole or<br />

in part if we are delayed or prevented from carrying on our business or any of our obligations<br />

under these Terms and Conditions due to any circumstance beyond our reasonable control.<br />

8.3 Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall be deemed to have given you a licence or<br />

any other rights to use the intellectual property rights owned by or licensed to us, including those<br />

created by us in the course of performance of our obligations.<br />

8.4 No third party (excluding any member of the BA group, who shall have such benefit and<br />

right) shall have the benefit of or the right to enforce these Terms and Conditions under the<br />

Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 or otherwise.<br />

8.5 These Terms and Conditions set out the entire agreement and understanding between you<br />

and us in connection with the sale of the Goods. You agree that you have not entered into this<br />

agreement in reliance on any representation made by or on behalf of BA except in so far as<br />

contained in these Terms and Conditions.<br />

8.6 Nothing in these Terms and Conditions excludes or limits our liability for fraudulent<br />

misrepresentation or for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.<br />

9 LAW AND JURISDICTION<br />

These Terms and Conditions shall be subject to English law and the parties hereby submit to the<br />

exclusive jurisdiction of English courts.<br />

10 DATA PROTECTION<br />

If you place an order with us, we will record your personal details. Your data will be used<br />

principally to provide you with the Goods and/or services you have purchased. We retain the<br />

data you provide from time to time, including data we collect when you place an order or use<br />

our products and services. Your data may be used for the following purposes: accounting, billing<br />

and audit, credit or other payment card verification, security, administrative and legal purposes,<br />

systems testing, maintenance and development. For these purposes we may disclose your data<br />

other companies involved in providing you with the goods and/or services you have ordered<br />

(including our payment gateway service provider, logistics providers and customer service<br />

agencies and credit and charge card companies. This may involve sending your data outside<br />

the European Economic Area.<br />

11 VARIATION<br />

We reserve the right to change these Terms and Conditions at any time. Any revised version<br />

will govern Requests and our relationship with you from the time at which it is posted on the<br />
