PVHS Course Selection
Process
When students begin the course selection process, several considerations need to be made
regarding which courses should be chosen. First and foremost, students need to meet the
PVPUSD graduation requirements, both the subject and credit requirements. The next
consideration is the requirements for college admission. Students who are interested in
playing Division I and II sports in college also need to review the NCAA subject
requirements. (For detailed information, go to www.eligiblitycenter.org)
For underclassmen, it is recommended that they follow the UC/CSU A-G requirements as a
basic guideline for college subject requirements. With the A-G requirements, students
should complete the recommended course sequence in all subject areas. As students move
on in the high school years, it is important to research the subject requirements for other
colleges and universities that are of interest. As a general rule of thumb, competitive and
highly selective colleges recommend four years of the five core academic subject areas
(English, math, science, history/social studies, and foreign language).
In early spring, a student's current academic teachers will make recommendations regarding
the courses he/she should enroll in for the following year. These recommendations will be
made by the English, math and foreign language teachers. For science and history courses,
students should refer to the prerequisite listed in the course description handbook. Students
should also review the course pathways outlined in this handbook for appropriate course
sequence by grade level. The course planning sheet students received from their counselor
during their sophomore counseling appointment is also helpful in the planning process.
At the beginning of the course selection process, students will receive information in the mail
which contains instructions for completing their course registration on Naviance, as well as
their teacher recommendations. Students will have a two week window to select their
courses on Naviance. After the selection process has been completed, students will print
the course selection page, secure their parent's signature and return the signed form to the
counseling office by the specified deadline.
(For detailed instructions, go to www.pvhigh.com.Click on Counseling>PVHS Course
Information>Naviance Scheduling Instrux.)
In mid-April, students will meet individually with their counselor during English class to
review the courses selected on Naviance. This is an opportunity for the counselor to review
that the student is meeting both graduation requirements and A-G UC subject requirements.
Students can clarify any questions at this time regarding appropriate course sequence and
level of rigor in course work.
After the counselors have met with all of the students, verification of course work will be
mailed home for students and parents to review. Any changes to these registered courses
must be made in writing and accompany parent permission.
