PTSA Newsletter December 2011-January 2012 Volume 10, Issue III
A Letter from the Principal
Dear Sea Kings:
It has been a great start to the school year. As we conclude the fall athletics season and look forward to the holidays, we are
very proud of our students for all of their accomplishments. Our students’ successes consist of Bay League championships,
CIF championships, a very well attended and well-reviewed fall play, and various academic achievements. Special
programs such as Link Crew, Freshman Retreat, and Challenge Day have made a definitive impact on the school culture and
special assemblies have brought attention to various topics that affect our students’ daily lives. PVHS has had a tremendous
start of school in the first three months.
In the 2011-2012 school year, PVHS has tried to stress three important goals for our students. First, we seek to create a
positive high school experience for all of our students. We want to make sure that we have a niche for every student. Kids
need to have a passion at school, and it is the school’s job to ensure that we offer a variety of opportunities for our student
body. Secondly, we recognize that academic achievement is one of the most important aspects of the school. High schools
are special in that we have multiple ways to measure our students’ success. Not only do we value the data we receive from
the API and CST scores, but we also look to the awards our students earn, their meaningful work in the community and the
improvements they have shown. In 2011, PVHS has left no doubt that we are a fine academic institution and that our
students are some of the top in the state. Third, PVHS recognizes that preparing our students for post high school
opportunities is critical to their success in the real world. While almost 80% of our students go to a four year university, we
strive to make sure that each student finds the right university, community college or occupation. We want to make sure our
students are successful after high school; it is not enough to simply get them in to school. We are proud of the work our
students have done thus far and fully expect that it continues going forward.
PVHS is a special place. We offer a small, private school feeling, but all of the big
school opportunities. Our teacher, counselors and administrators know and take an
active interest in the success of our students and we strive to create a culture of
continuous improvement. I would like to thank the PTSA for making all of this
possible. Without the support of the PTSA, the positive high school experience would
not be possible, the academic achievement of our students would be diminished and
our students would not know about as many opportunities that they have after high
school. Simply put, the generosity and hard work of our PTSA makes PVHS special.
I am grateful for all of the support.
Happy Holidays and Go Sea Kings!
The Wave is published bimonthly.
The deadline to submit articles for
this newsletter is the 15th of the
month prior to publication.
At this time when we traditionally give thanks and count our
blessings, I'd like to publicly thank all of the parents and
volunteers who faced the challenge presented by our grim state
budget by working to pass Measure M. Without the hard work of
Kim Rutledge, who co-chaired the Measure M committee, and
our scores of parents, faculty and administrators who manned the
phones, walked the neighborhoods, and worked tirelessly to "get
out the vote," our school would be facing truly devastating
budget cuts.
Big thanks also go to Kristin Huber and Sue Wilkinson for
bringing Challenge Day to PVHS. This award-winning program
was sponsored at PVHS by the PTSA and Booster Club in an
effort to help change the atmosphere of our school, from one
where students may feel alone and 'different' to a friendly and
welcoming place where all students feel respected and
understood. The feedback from our students who attended
Challenge Day has been overwhelming -- they tell us it was "life
changing," "touching," and "awesome, wonderful and fantastic. "
We hope to repeat Challenge Day next year and have heard that
other schools on the hill will be adopting the program, too.
Eventually, we hope that every one of our students will
"Experience the Challenge."
If you haven't been able to attend a PTSA meeting yet this year,
please try to join us next month. Nick Stephany and Brent
Kuykendall will be there to tell us what is going on at the school;
Teri Kuwahara will update us on college visits, the application
process, financial aid, and other crucial college admission issues;
and we usually have a speaker on a topic of interest to parents of
high schoolers. Plus, it's fun!
Happy Holidays, and
Go Sea Kings!
NOTICE to all parents!
PTSA Student directories have been disbursed to the students.
If you ordered a student directory and have not received it, if you have any corrections
and/or if you would like to purchase one, please contact Helaine, at
shjmlopes@cox.net.
Also, please note that the phone numbers on the cover are incorrect. Please
use the numbers on the first page (310‐378‐8471) to contact PVHS.
Did you know ….
Fortunately, our school has never experienced a "lock down" situation.
But in the event of violence on campus that required our administration
to secure the school, do you know what the School District's policies are
regarding communicating to parents what is taking place
Our District's first priority is to ensure the safety of our students. To that
end, the first contact with parents may be brief so that the administration
and faculty can focus on getting our students into secure locations.
As parents, we will all be concerned about our children; however please
refrain from trying to contact the school during a lockdown. As time and
the situation permits, more information will be provided to parents. Each
teacher has detailed instructions on the steps to follow in case of a lockdown
and is well prepared to keep our students out of harm's way. We
all hope that our school never experiences a "lock down", but it is reassuring
to know that our administration has a plan to keep our students
as safe as possible and to communicate with parents what is occurring
on campus as soon as circumstances allow.
A Special Thank You
We would like to send out a very special "Thank You", to Julie Beckman.
She was a tremendous help this year with the Reflections Program.
We couldn't have done it without her.
"Thanks Julie". From: Irene, Kelly and Tintin
2011 Fall PTSA Gifting Committee Proposes
Gifts Large and Small
to Benefit PVHS Students
The PTSA Gifting Committee met on November 10 th to review staff requests for departmental gifts of
supplies, books, materials and equipment to benefit students. The Gifting Committee is recommending
that the PTSA membership approve approximately $65,000 in gifts at its November 22nd meeting.
These gifts are possible due to the tremendous generosity of PVHS PTSA families at this year’s registration.
We continue to emphasize gifting for all students, at all levels in all departments, and without these
generous funds many of our classrooms would look very different.
Here is just a small sample of the kinds of items the Committee is proposing the PTSA approve at its
November meeting –
Elmos with Projector for our Special Ed Students
Challenge Day Deposit
Math & English STAR prep materials
COLLEGE ADMISSION TEST PREPARATION
Teri Kuwahara, Director of the College & Career Center
(310) 378-8471 x 618, kuwaharat@pvpusd.k12.ca.us
It is the policy of PVHS and the College & Career Center not to endorse any test preparation
course or company. However, test preparation companies who work with Palos Verdes students
have the opportunity to have a link to their websites on our school website. A page with links to
test preparation companies and courses is found at:
http://pvhigh.com/C_CCC/CCC_test_prep.html
(under Counseling/CCC>college admission tests>test preparation)
There are many test preparation companies who use the PVHS facility to conduct their classes.
Prep courses vary from group to private and different fees. If a student/family chooses to look at
test preparation for SAT, at PVHS, we recommend all families “shop around” and find the
course that best suits their schedule and budget.
At Palos Verdes High School we offer free test preparation in Naviance for SAT and ACT.
The Method Test Prep 2.0 is an easy-to-use self preparation with practice tests, quizzes and full
length tests. It includes a vocabulary builder with electronic flashcards and math tutorials, complete
with videos explaining how to solve a missed question. Last July, I attended the Naviance
Summer Institute near Austin, Texas, with Trista Ramirez. There, I attended a workshop on
Method Test prep and discovered some of the features they added to their new upgraded version.
Method Test Prep (MTP) is designed with a student’s busy schedule in mind.
They recommend a minimum of 2 hours per week preparation using their program
during the 8 weeks leading up to the SAT or ACT test.
Review notes for both SAT or ACT are highly recommended and found in their
MTP Resource Library. Go over them before the exam for last minute “cram” review.
Method Test Prep President, Tom Ehlers, recommends students take both the SAT and
ACT, as 30% of students will do better on one over the other.
If students purchase a hard-copy study guide, MTP recommended “The Official Study
Guide” (blue book) or “The Official ACT Study Guide”(red book) available on Amazon.com
Seniors should check with the colleges they intend to apply for their testing deadlines as they
may vary. Most colleges will accept November and/or December test scores.
Juniors may now register for spring (recommended) test dates by going to
www.collegeboard.com (SAT) and www.act.org (ACT). PVHS is a test site but will fill up. For
more information on college admission testing, please refer to the College Admission Guidebook
found on the school website at: http://pvhigh.com/C_CCC/CCC_College_Guidebook.html
If you have any questions about Method Test Prep or Naviance, please contact me in the CCC.
Library News
College Freshmen Information Literacy Skills:
As part of my professional development, I was at three-day state conference hosted by the California
School Library Association (CSLA) and the California Library Association (CLA) held in
Pasadena. In one of the many workshops that I attended, one was called “Postsecondary Perspectives
on Lifelong Learning Essentials: Skills High School Students Need When They Go to
College,” a presentation by three academic librarians—a UC librarian, a Cal State librarian, and a
community college librarian. I felt great affirmation that what we are doing here at PVHS in
preparing students for research is exactly what we should be doing. We are exposing students to
subscription databases and trying to teach them that the Free Web is not the ideal place for finding
authoritative articles and information. Students are learning how to cite their sources in a
Works Cited and how to use in-text documentation in their papers. We address the topic of plagiarism
through PowerPoint presentations and an informative DVD series. Our English teachers
and a few content teachers are requiring research papers and essays be submitted through our
subscription Turnitin.com service, a plagiarism detection-deterrent program. Many community
colleges and universities across the nation subscribe, too, so our graduates who go on to higher
education are quite familiar with the paper submittal process. The emphasis on technology was a
huge topic at the conference, and the PVHS library and the English department will be collaborating
on further improving our curriculum to address additional skills necessary to educate our
students in Web-based research. Further affirmation that we are on the right track is when
PVHS alumni return to our campus to share their college research experiences, and it is not uncommon
to hear our former students tell us that their high school senior research papers, their use
of our databases, and their ability to properly cite sources has given them an advantage over most
other incoming college freshmen who have not had the same opportunities. And particularly
with budget cuts, many high schools are not staffed with a credentialed (teacher) librarian and do
not subscribe to electronic databases. A Loyola Marymount University librarian once said that
she could recognize which students in her library came from high schools with a credentialed
librarian. So, big Thank Yous to the Ed Foundation for funding my position, to the Booster
Club and PTSA for providing all our library resources (including databases), to the district for
providing a full-time library assistant and recognizing the importance of school libraries, and to
our PVHS administrators for advocating for our strong school library. Our PVHS graduates are
a leg-ahead!
California Scholarship Federation (CSF)
COMMUNITY SERVICE: In support of the CSF state motto “Scholarship for Service,” our
November-December donation project will benefit Murchison Elementary School in East Los Angeles.
This is the second year we are helping this school in an economically disadvantaged community where
most students are on free lunch programs. The donations are for the school’s annual Christmas Store, to
be held on December 15 th in the school’s auditorium. By then, Murchison students will have earned play
money for good behavior and attendance, and students will apply their earnings at this store, to be
stocked with assorted toys and books requested by the store’s organizers. The donation drive:
November 21 st to December 2 nd . We plan to deliver these items to Murchison Elementary School (1501
Murchison St., L.A. 90033, Lincoln Heights area) on Thursday, December 8 th . If any parent is available
to help drive these items in the morning, please contact Aileen Willoughby in the library at x234 or email
willoughby@pvpusd.k12.ca.us. Remember that CSF members only need to participate in one
activity/project per semester to be considered an “active” member. This participation can be either
through a CSF designated donation or service from our list (the Pier-to-Pier Walk counts). We have made
Marching Band L.A. Food Bank Donation Drive

The PVHS Marching Band, led by Nick Harrington, held a food drive to benefit
the L.A. Food Bank, which spanned from the second week of school to September
24. The L.A. Food Bank is an organization in downtown L.A. that collects
and distributes food to hundreds of charities across L.A. County. The food then
goes to low-income families, and especially children who have no way to get the
food they need. After just two weeks, the Marching Band made an astounding
$2,106 and collected 1500 pounds of food. The donations of music department
students helped to double the goal of $1,000. Great job, Marching Band!
GET OUT THE PARENT VOTE DRIVE AND MEASURE M
ELECTION RESULTS FOR NOVEMBER 8, 2011
GET OUT THE PARENT VOTE DRIVE
In this past election all the schools on the hill joined in an effort to increase our parent voting
percentage from a historically low turnout of about 15%, which is consistent with the average
parent voter turnout in other communities, to a number that reflects the above average
performance of our parents, teachers, students and community. This effort to Get Out the Parent
Vote at PVHS was spearheaded by the PVHS PTSA and Dr. Stephany and was intended as the first
step in a long term process to motivate parents and students to engage in our democratic
process and exercise one of our most hard fought fundamental rights as a United States citizen;
the right to vote. The final numbers were not available at the writing of this article but a review of
the numbers and report will be sent to all in the coming weeks. We are cautiously optimistic that
the campaign did positively impact parent voting and will result in an uptick in the Palos Verdes
parent voting percentage.
MEASURE M – Keep Our PVP Schools Strong Campaign
Local funding has become more and more important to school districts in California as the state
continues to struggle with the financial crisis that has swept the nation. Education analysts
consistently advise school districts to prudently plan by reducing their budgets into the
foreseeable future. Fortunately, in Palos Verdes, many of the funding gaps in prior years’ have
been closed through contributions from PTSA’s, Booster Clubs, the Peninsula Education
Foundation and other Palos Verdes community members. In addition, the single largest local
source of funding has been parcel tax and bond measure funding. This past summer, the PVPUSD
School Board voted to move forward with Measure M; an effort to combine and extend the
existing parcel taxes of $374, all of which stays in Palos Verdes to support local schools. It would
require a 2/3rds majority to pass.
A tremendous effort was undertaken to pass Measure M and, in the end, the measure did pass.
Unofficially, of 13,771 voters, 9,484 voted yes on Measure M and the measure passed by just
over 300 votes. As a result, the Palos Verdes school district can predictably budget $7 million of
local, stable funding. Within days of its passage, the Legislative Analyst Office reported that
California’s projected revenue will be $3.7 billion below budget triggering mid‐year cuts to K‐12
education among others. The magnitude of the final cuts will not be known until late December
or early January of next year but the local impact on PVPUSD is estimated at about $3 million.
While the Measure M money does not represent “new” dollars to the district, it does provide
significant and predictable funding that cannot be cut by the state. For that and for all the efforts
of Palos Verdes parents, businesses and residents in support of Measure M, we say,
“Congratulations and thank you!”
