College of Veterinary Medicine
The College of Veterinary Medicine houses a variety of facilities and laboratory equipment
that is available for CVM researchers to share or use for a fee. Please check with the contact
person listed for availability of the equipment.
CVM Facilities
FLOW CYTOMETRY FACILITY (Rm 155, ASVM). This fee-for-service facility
contains one FACSCanto equipped for multiplex fluorescent color acquisition/analysis on a
HP PC, and is networked with two Apple PCs equipped with CellQuest and FlowJo for data
analysis, Microsoft office, and statistical software; and one FLUOstar OPTIMA: A fully
automated microplate based reader that performs fluorescence intensity, time-resolved
fluorescence, high-performance luminescence (flash and glow), and absorbance, which is
operated through a Dell PC.
ZEISS AXIOVERT INVERTED FLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY STATION (Rm 201,
ASVM). The Axiovert 200 inverted microscope with the Cell Observer system for live cell
imaging offers an on-site system that is flexible, expandable and user-friendly due to its
many amenities. These include: (i) eye-level LCD display with magnification, shutter
position, function information; (ii) features such as Aqua Stop and Ergo tube which protect
expensive optics and provide comfortable use; (iii) sensitive fluorescence capability using the
Light Trap system with large field of view; and (iv) digital imaging fordocumentation and 1-
6 dimensional image construction.
GAIT ANALYSIS LABORATORY (Rm 231 VMC) with serial AMTI OR6-7-1000 force
platforms recessed into the floor, Acquire software on a dedicated computer for analysis of
the kinetic force platform data, 6 digital cameras and one color live camera for optical
capture of body movements during gait and Peak Performance software on a dedicated
computer for analysis of the kinematic optical capture data. A General Electric Lunar
Prodigy Advance dual energy xray absorptiometer that measures bone mineral density and
bone mineral content and has software for total body measurement that is an effective tool
for assessing secondary conditions that cause osteoporosis or osteopenia, disorders that affect

ody composition, as well as growth in immature animals. This technology allows a noninvasive
measurement of skeletal bone status and lean and fat tissue components including
percentage fat, lean tissue mass, etc. that can be used for monitoring of weight reduction,
treatment response in primary and secondary hyperpararthyroidism, Cushing’s disease,
cachexic disorders and malabsorptive syndromes. There is also a treadmill with a dedicated
computer that uses telemetry to assess cardiac function (Dr. Ferasin).
