PRESIDENT
Assalammualaikum and
greetings,
Dear Colleagues and friends,
Half of the year has passed and so far the world has
been rather fortunate where natural disasters are concerned
as we have not encountered any major ones. For that we are
indeed very thankful.
It does not mean that we can rest on our laurels however and
as such, efforts are still ongoing for MERCY Malaysia as we
roll out the first phase of our disaster preparedness programme
nationwide. MERCY Malaysia was also invited by the National
Disaster Management Center of Brunei to conduct the Training
of Trainers (ToT) programme, specifically for teachers in Brunei
to conduct their School Preparedness Programme. This is quite
an honour for MERCY Malaysia and we are grateful for the
trust and confidence given to us by the Brunei government. It
is testimony to the impact that MERCY’s School Preparedness
Programme has had not only in Malaysia but also in the region.
On 28 June, MERCY Malaysia held its Annual General
Meeting and discussions were focused on the organisation’s
strategic direction for the next three years. For the first time
in its thirteen year history, MERCY Malaysia has a strategic
plan meticulously planned and written on paper. It is also the
organisation’s intention to ensure that the plan is followed
through with implementation plans as we move into the next
phase of the organisation’s growth. MERCY Malaysia also
successfully released its 2011 Annual Report detailing our
progress for the past year.
In May, MERCY Malaysia also began to implement its
strategic partnership with Save The Children UK, a major
INGO, by instituting a strategic capacity building program for
MERCY Malaysia. We were pleased to receive two staff from
Save the Children UK who helped provide training for our
communications and fundraising (CFRD) team for a period
of two weeks. As MERCY Malaysia work towards sustainable
funding, this training is necessary for our team to gain much
needed exposure from an established and world renowned
humanitarian organisation. MERCY Malaysia also received
another staff from Save the Children UK who came to monitor
and help identify areas for improvement in the Operations
division.
On the fundraising front, we are delighted to have been chosen
by MRSM for a fundraising campaign that will see all MRSM
in Malaysia come up with innovative ways to collect donation.
We are truly grateful that MRSM has chosen MERCY Malaysia
to be the beneficiary for the campaign, in particular our project
in Somalia. Eventhough the situation in the Horn of Africa has
improved, a lot more needs to be done for the people. It is for
that reason that we are happy to accept a helping hand such as
the one extended by MRSM.
From Cambodia to Pakistan, the Philippines to Sri Lanka,
MERCY Malaysia’s projects are going strong. We are thankful
for all the support that we have received thus far and we look
forward to receiving the same support for the rest of the year
and the years to come.
Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus
Clinic for Myanmar Refugee Children at Jalan Pudu
A programme which started in mid-2010, MERCY Malaysia
continues its effort in giving immunisation, this time for the
Myanmarese Refugees from the Alliance of Chin Refugees
(ACR) in Pudu. The first clinic for 2012 started in May and two months
on, MERCY Malaysia has immunised 242 refugee children against
tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus,
pertussis, polio, haemophilus
influenzae type B, hepatitis B,
measles, mumps and rubella. The
clinic will run on a monthly basis
to provide follow-up vaccinations
where necessary.
We met with one of the refugee
children, Biak, who recounted her
journey to Malaysia with her family
as well as her hopes and dreams.
“My family brought me and my
three sisters to Malaysia since we
were small. We moved quite a lot
because we were not accepted in
a lot of places. I’ve joined the ACR
School for almost two and half
years already.”
Biak, who spoke fluent English also
mentioned that, “It is good to be
vaccinated; it is good for our health so we won’t get sick (two of her
sisters also study at the school)”. She also thanked MERCY Malaysia
for giving them a chance to have a healthy life and help prevent the
spread of diseases in the community they live in.
Filtered Water to Over 500 People in Jadupur Village,
Pabna District, Bangladesh
The River Sand Filter (RSF) Project is a project which
aims to provide arsenic-free water to the arsenic affected
community in Jadupur Village. The project is for a period
of one year from May 2011 to May 2012, delivering filtered water
to more than 500 people in the village, through the 30 tap points at
household level and 3 outlets at the RSF unit itself.
Having water supplied directly to their houses has helped reduce the
safety risk of young children, women and the elderly who collect water
up to three times a day (as much as 60 litres a day) from locations
which can be as far as few kilometers from their houses.
Multivitamins
and salicylic acid
ointment were
also distributed
to 150 confirmed
arsenic patients
for a period of 12
months to reduse
the symptoms
caused by arsenic One of the tap point owners, utilising the tap water for
poisoning such cooking and drinking purposes
as melanosis,
keratosis and gangrene.
244 families benefitted from 80 Rainwater Harvesting
(RWH) Units in Pabna District, Bangladesh
Pabna District is categorised as one of the districts with the
highest level of Arsenic contamination (>0.05ppm) which is
higher than the national permissible level. The RWH was
set up from May 2011 until May 2012 in Pabna District, Bangladesh
to help the arsenic-affected communities by providing safe arsenicfree
water. 80 RWH units were installed with a capacity of 3,000 litres
each, benefitting up to 244 families (equivalent to 1,225 people). The
units were installed in 5 villages namely; Raghurampur, Mahedinagar,
Chandipur, Ratongonj and Jadupur.
A series of activities had also been carried out, such as mobilisation
of community members, Health and Hygiene Training Sessions and
continuous Monitoring & Evaluation to inculcate a sense of ownership
as well as to educate the RWH owners
on rainwater use and maintenance of the
RWH units. A total of 458 participants (of
which 250 were females) took part in the
health and hygiene training sessions.
Topics covered were diarrhea, personal
hygiene, preparation of saline at
household level, highlighting importance
of rainwater and maintenance of the
RWH units, etc…
On 9 June 2012, MERCY Malaysia visited one of its project
sites, Mother and Child Health Programme in Kisaran,
of our experienced volunteer midwives, we will train the midwives in
Ernawati (Erna) a mother
of two and now expecting
her third child has joined Exercise for expectant mothers
this programme for
almost four months. For her first and second births, she did not
undergo the proper training for expectant mothers and had hardly
any exposure to maternal health activities or programmes. “Since
I was a teenager, I have been helping the midwives (Kader) in my
village. However, I did not gain much knowledge since midwives in
some parts of rural Indonesia do not have adequate knowledge or
awareness on early pregnancy care”.
After joining this programme, Erna feels very happy as she gets
the chance to learn many new things about pregnancy apart from
meeting new friends. “I feel healthier and more energetic after joining
this programme. I have learned a lot of things such as proper diets
for expectant mothers, the right sleeping position, exercises for
pregnant mothers and even the right way to deliver. I can feel the
difference compared to my previous pregnancies. Now I don’t feel
exhausted as before”, said Erna.
