3. Population and Demography
The population estimates presented here describe the size, regional
distribution and age and gender structure of the population of the Abu
Dhabi Emirate for mid-year 2011. Statistics on births, deaths, marriages and
divorce and corresponding key indicators for the calendar year 2011 are also
presented.
The resident population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate exceeded 2 million people
in 2011. In mid-year 2011 the estimated population in Abu Dhabi Region
was 1.31 million (61.8%), Al Ain Region 0.58 million (27.6%), and Al Gharbia
0.23 million (10.6%), making the total mid-year population for the Abu Dhabi
Emirate 2.12 million.
In Abu Dhabi, fertility is higher than most developed regions of the world,
and mortality remains extremely low. In 2011 Crude Birth Rates and Crude
Death Rates among Citizens were 15.1 births per 1000 people and 1.4 deaths
per 1000 people respectively.

3.1. Population
The population data in the Statistical Yearbook are estimates of the usual
resident population in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. The population estimates
include people who are usual residents and Emirati citizens away from their
Abu Dhabi Emirate residence and legally entitled to live in UAE. The mid-year
2011 preliminary population estimates are based on preliminary results of the
Abu Dhabi Census 2011 and the Frame Update Project in 2010.
In 1975, the total population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate was 211,812 people,
according to the 1975 Census, and this figure increased to 1,399,484 people
in the 2005 Census. In 2011, The population of the Emirate was estimated to
be 2,120,700 people, indicating that from December 1975 to June 2011 the
population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate increased about 10 times in 36 years.
Of the total Abu Dhabi Emirate population, 439,100 people (more than 20%)
are Emirati citizens. About 236,000 (53.7%) of the citizens live in Abu Dhabi
Region, and about 178,500 (40.7%) in Al Ain Region, leaving 24,600 (5.6%) in
Al Gharbia.
The non-citizen population of 1,681,600 people comprise almost 80% of the
total resident population. Of the non-citizens 1,074,300people (63.9%) live in
Abu Dhabi Region.
More than 70% of the population of Abu Dhabi Emirate are males, due to an
influx of male migrant workers.
The population density of Abu Dhabi Emirate in 2011 was 36 persons per
square kilometre. The population density in Abu Dhabi Region, Al-Ain Region
and Al Gharbia was 120, 44 , and 6 persons per square kilometre respectively.
Al Gharbia is the most sparsely populated region in Abu Dhabi Emirate but
with a fast population growth.
