Onguka arrested for advocating for the Rights of Kenyans.

The 2 Activists were released on bail terms at about 4 pm on Friday
November 14th 2008 by Kibera Magistrate Ms. Wanjala
Activists Wangui Mbatia and Ken Ochieng Onguka arrested for advocating
for the Rights of Kenyans.
Activists Wangui Mbatia and Ken Ochieng Onguka have just been
arrested by the Kenya Police at Jeevanjee Gardens and have been taken
to the Central Police Station where they are now being detained.
Wangui Mbatia and Ken Ochieng Onguka were arrested for distributing t-
shirts on the controversial taxes for Members of Parliament , and DVD’s
advocating for the full implementation of the Waki Commission Report.
The activity is part of the ongoing activities by the Partnership for Change.
We understand that they will be charged with unlawful assembly this
afternoon at 2.30 pm, we are not sure where, but possibly at the High
Court of Kenya.
Agenda 1 of the National Accord restored our civil liberties, and arresting
citizens for wearing t-shirts that say “Yes to Waki” and “No taxes for MP’S,
No taxes for Us” cannot constitute a crime of unlawful assembly. Kenyans
wearing these t-shirts are now in danger of being arrested. There are
several of these shirts in circulation and thus several Kenyans are in
danger of being arrested. The Police cannot be allowed to continue to
harass peaceful Kenyan citizens.

Wangui Mbatia and and Ken Ochieng Onguka are now on their way to the
Kibera Law Courts. For those who have expressed solidarity with these
noble Kenyans, we thank you on behalf of Kenya.

The National Accord is the Law and must be implemented. The Kenya
Police has been severely indicted by the Waki Report and will not tolorate
Kenyans agitating for its implementation. The Politicians have also taken a
position, where poor Kenyans will continue to finance their lavish life styles
and the politicians will not pay taxes. This cannot be right! Kenyans must
demand the end of Impunity, because failing to do so will surely be the
end of this country.

Partnership for Change Activists Wangui Mbatia and Ken Ochieng
Onguka were released at 4 pm by the Magistrate at Kibera Law Courts,
after their arrest at 10 am by the Kenya Police at Jeevanjee Gardens.
They have both pleaded not guilty to one charge of unlawful assembly and
are both paying a twenty thousand shillings cash bond to compel their
next appearance in court.
Wangui Mbatia and Ken Ochieng Onguka were arrested in a public park
while talking to Kenyans and distributing free t- shirts on the controversial
taxes for Members of Parliament, and DVD’s advocating for the full
implementation of the Waki Commission Report. The activity is part of an
ongoing campaign by the Partnership for Change.
The Partnership for Change believes that Agenda 1 of the National Accord
restored Kenyan’s civil liberties, and is raising awareness of this fact.
Arresting citizens for wearing t-shirts that say “Yes to Waki” and “No taxes
for MP’S, No taxes for Us” is disrespectful of Kenyan’s rights to free
expression and to freely associate with others on matters of national
importance such as the implementation of all the National Accord
Agreements and Reports of its consequent tribunals; and of course to
agitate against unequal treatment of citizens and misuse of public funds.
The Kenya Police must not be allowed to continue to harass peaceful
Kenyan citizens, who have every right to peacefully comment on matters
of public and national interest.
