Software Tools
BMT has an international reputation for its shoreside and
onboard software tools specifically developed for the shipping

and customize software and systems, create and populate

Traffic Flow Optimisation

Good traffic management can increase revenue opportunities.
BMT optimises traffic flow by mapping normal circulation
patterns, predicting how individuals will interact during
disembarkation and the daily traffic of decks, theatres
and dining rooms. We can improve traffic flow and reduce
congestion for:

Ship Husbandry Services
BMT provides ship husbandry expertise on cleaning, paint
application and repair specification, focusing on reducing costs
in these areas. We are able to advise our clients on how to
achieve the optimum balance between safety, availability and
cost of ownership of their vessels, extending across:
• ship husbandry;
• corrosion control;
• paint coating and preservation surveys, above and
below the waterline, including superstructure, tanks,
accommodation and vehicle decks;
• specifications for environmentally-friendly (Low-VOC, non-
TBT containing, biodegradable) coatings and finishes for
maintenance and repair activities.

BMT supplies a range of safety and security services, from fire
and risk consultancy, through training services to vessel and port
security plans.
• Safety and security management system consulting,
including: audits on board and ashore; safety assessments
of passenger or crew operations; optimisation of company
safety and security systems; and overall improvement of a
company’s management system.
• Port, ship and maritime supply chain security services
to mitigate risk of security incidents on passenger ships
or in terminals by: development, evaluation and revision
of security plans based on knowledge or regulatory
requirements; supply chain security surveys; and
management system evaluation.
• Training consulting services to provide assistance to
operators in defining training requirements, identifying off
the shelf training products, cost-effectiveness analysis
and development of customised computer-based training
courses.
• Shiphandling and manoeuvring simulation, from full
scale trials and free running and captive model tests to
mathematical prediction and simulation, using BMT PC
Rembrandt v4, an interactive and user- friendly PC-based
manoeuvring simulator. This can reduce risk through port
approvals and manoeuvre rehearsals.
• Safety program management support, including: safety
mishap investigation and analysis; policy and procedure
development; safety meeting facilitation; shipboard safety
training services; internet-based hazard tracking system
development; and performance measurement.
• Comprehensive ship evacuation analysis using the
maritimeEXODUS software system to demonstrate full
compliance with a minimum crew size.
• Risk-based fire safety consultancy to ensure risk of fire
is managed beyond the levels provided by compliance
with classification society, IMO and SOLAS rules. BMT’s
Fire Risk assessors identify hazards and deliver fire safety
analysis reports with findings, procedural reviews and
recommendations to improve efficiency and reduce risk.

Environment
Ship operators are faced with increasingly stringent and diverse
environmental constraints and also strive to be good corporate
citizens. BMT provides technical and operational support to
assist in achieving this goal. Services include:
• air emissions – we develop strategies to control air
emissions through an intimate knowledge of emission
abatement and add-on control technologies, fuel types
and diesel technology. BMT provides project management,
design development and product testing services;
• environmental management system consulting and
auditing – our services include one-off ship audits for a
specific purpose or the more comprehensive implementation
or improvement of a company’s environmental management
system;
• ship waste treatment system consulting – assessment
of waste management equipment alternatives; reviewing
vendor specifications for equipment; providing expert
assistance during management of installations; analysis of
sampling results; and development of operating procedures
and training materials to ensure safe and effective system
operation;
• ballast water technology – BMT performs applied research
and development in ballast water treatment technology,
providing independent, objective assessment of treatment
systems and issues; full phase trials and testing; individual
component, chemical or material testing; and new system
concept analysis and system design;
• environmental impact assessments – identifying and
mitigating embodied and emitted environmental impacts
from concept to disposal to include emissions, discharges
and noise;
• hazardous material inventory solutions – BMT has
developed a Green Passport database to facilitate the
population of a hazardous materials database in accordance
with the requirements of the IMO’s ‘Ship Recycling
Guidelines’ and can provide a full range of ship hazardous
materials technical and management services;
• marine coatings and finishes – BMT provides expert
advice on environmentally-friendly ship coatings and finishes
(hull and topside).
