When an applicati<strong>on</strong> for landlord registrati<strong>on</strong> is approved by a local authority it is valid for three<br />
years. If a landlord is still letting then they should apply to renew their registrati<strong>on</strong> prior to the expiry<br />
date being reached.<br />
The renewals process has now started for some local authorities. Fife Council’s first applicati<strong>on</strong> is due<br />
for renewal in September 2010. There will be <strong>on</strong>-going informati<strong>on</strong> provided and discussi<strong>on</strong>s with<br />
landlords/agents prior to this date, to keep every<strong>on</strong>e fully informed.<br />
The legislati<strong>on</strong> governing landlord registrati<strong>on</strong> is the Antisocial Behaviour etc (Scotland) Act 2004 (part<br />
8). This requires all landlords to be registered with their local authority. Secti<strong>on</strong> 84(6) specifies that<br />
registrati<strong>on</strong> will expire after three years, beginning with the day <strong>on</strong> which the entry is made (the date<br />
of approval). Landlords who are still letting when their registrati<strong>on</strong> expires are legally required to make<br />
an applicati<strong>on</strong> for renewal.<br />
When should I renew my registrati<strong>on</strong>?<br />
The Landlord Registrati<strong>on</strong> Team will notify landlord/agents 3 m<strong>on</strong>ths prior to the expiry of the<br />
applicati<strong>on</strong> to allow a reas<strong>on</strong>able period of time to submit a renewal applicati<strong>on</strong>. A further reminder<br />
will be issued after the expiry date. The sec<strong>on</strong>d reminder will warn that if an applicati<strong>on</strong> is not make<br />
within 14 days, the late applicati<strong>on</strong> fee of £110 may be added to the registrati<strong>on</strong> fee.<br />
How much does it cost?<br />
Landlords who are renewing are required to pay a £55.00 registrati<strong>on</strong> fee and £11.00 for each let<br />
property which is listed <strong>on</strong> their registrati<strong>on</strong> at the time of renewal. Payment must be made at the<br />
time of applicati<strong>on</strong>. There are a number of discounts and you may be entitled to if you fall into any<br />
of the following categories – HMO landlord, Joint Owner, Charitable Organisati<strong>on</strong>, Landlord with<br />
registrati<strong>on</strong>s in more than <strong>on</strong>e local authority.<br />
How do I renew my registrati<strong>on</strong>?<br />
Landlords can apply to renew their registrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>line at www.landlordregistrati<strong>on</strong>scotland.gov.<br />
uk up to 3 m<strong>on</strong>ths before their current registrati<strong>on</strong> expires. A paper renewal applicati<strong>on</strong> can also<br />
be obtained by c<strong>on</strong>tacting a member of the landlord registrati<strong>on</strong> team <strong>on</strong> 01592 583397 or email<br />

Landlords who renew <strong>on</strong>line do not need to re-enter all their registrati<strong>on</strong> details. You are required to<br />
check all the details currently held about you and <strong>your</strong> let properties and if necessary, correct and<br />
amend <strong>your</strong> registrati<strong>on</strong> property portfolio.<br />
