Darley International Student Programme
Introduction
Darley Flying Start is a two year management training programme for future leaders of the
thoroughbred industry. The course offers challenging, dynamic learning environment. Applications
for the twelve places on the fully funded scholarship are accepted each year. The course
combines a range of lectures, visits and hands-on experience across five locations namely
Dubai, Australia, Ireland, USA and UK. There is continual assessment throughout the course
which includes appraisals, projects, assignments and examinations on the theoretical and
practical material covered. Darley Flying Start contracts leading universities and training providers
worldwide to deliver and certify business and equine modules. Trainees who complete
the course reaching the standard required graduate with the Darley Flying Start Diploma.
Horse Management
Trainees learn and practise horse care and management in successful thoroughbred breeding
and racing operations at each location. This includes daily work with horses along with access
to the administration and management aspects involved. There are skills assessments in
all facets of horse care and handling, including breeding and racing stock.
Business Management
Management modules are delivered in blocks spread over the two years. Learning is applied
practically through the requirement for each trainee to develop a viable business plan.
Mentors and visiting entrepreneurs ensure strong industry links and an awareness of current
thoroughbred industry issues. There is an international, cross cultural approach to business
management and leadership throughout the programme. Trainees are provided with laptops
and cloud computing technology so that they can research online, access industry software
and collaborate in group research and learning in all locations throughout the world.
Thoroughbred Industry
Trainees are exposed to current research, innovation and technologies in all aspects of the
industry including bloodstock, racing, breeding administration, betting, politics and consultancy.
Diverse opportunities to learn are provided to trainees through visits to stud farms,
training stables, sales complexes, racecourses, veterinary hospitals and research facilities. Key
personnel at these locations give a behind-the-scenes insight into their operations. Individual
work placements of four and six weeks are organised in Europe, Australia and the USA for
trainees during the first and second years. These work placements provide a challenging
environment during which trainees are expected to develop and skills and knowledge while
broadening their industry network. There is a significant element of self-study of prescribed
course materials.
Visits and Work Placements
Personal awareness and communication skills are a strong focus throughout the two year
course. Leadership theory and practise are implemented by trainees through activities and
responsibilities during all stages of the programme.
