From the Editor……
2010 has been a very good year for the ISAA, but it’s looking very probable that 2011 will even be better.
The ISAA Board Meeting was productive and many new things were developed, the first being that the
ISAA Pro Am will be moved to Des Moines in January 2012 with Scheel’s sponsoriing the event for
$10,000. Another new item that is in the making as I write this article, and that is an all new ISAA
Bowhunter Jamboree which is being planned by a commiittee consisting of John Carlson, Ed Horn, and
Ron Teurfel. It is something everyone will be curious about and want to shoot it. See page 22 for more
details.
You will want to read the 2010 ISAA Board Meeting Minutes that are on pages 12 and 13, if you like being kept aprised of what
the ISAA is up to. A new President, 1 st Vice President, and 2 nd Vice President were selected and are introduced in this issue.
For those of you who enjoy seeing photos of deer harvested, you can see them on pages 5 & 16-18.
I’ll close with just a note that the Arrow Hound will now be a quarterly issue rather than every other month and will be in black
and white only. It will be limited to 28 pages or less per issue. These changes were necessary to make it more affordable to
print and mail out. However, the full issue will also be available on the ISAA website (www.iowastatearchery.com) in full color.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the shoots in 2011. See you then.
Barb Sharp, ISAA Editor P.S. A great big THANK YOU to John Shappell for his help i converting documents to Word for me!
Hello all............my name is Diana Deaton and I have graciously been elected the new
ISAA President at the September 2010 board meeting. Please
check the Arrow Hound for the minutes to the meeting. I am
looking forward to working with the rest of the board to make the
next year a fun one and get to know more ISAA members at the
shoots. I have learned so much in regards to archery over the last
couple of years I would really like to see this sport grow for the
existing members and also for the younger members coming up.
A committee was selected at the ISAA board meeting to better improve the Bowhunter Jamboree. On this
committee are John Carlson, Ed Horn, and Ron Teufel. They will be making final decisions in the next week to
present to the Board for an up or down vote. The idea is to make the ISAA Bowhunter Jamboree similar to
the popular NFAA 3-D Shoot that is held every in Redding, California.
I am very excited that the board has voted to move the 2012 Iowa Pro Am to Des Moines......this will be a
prime opportunity to build on the already great shoot that has been taking place in Mason City. A special
THANK-YOU to Mr. Ron Teufel for his work as the past president! See you in Mason City in January.........
shooting class and place orange dots on the vitals for the freestyle shooters. Dan Vieth says that, feelings from
Davenport, is that is should be dropped totally and not used at all for the overall awards. Dean Conrad stated it
have Scheels also in a 3 year deal as a $10,000 title sponsor, if the Iowa Pro-Am signed a minimum three year
deal. They also said if we waited till 2012 to sign the deal we would then be shooting in the HyVee hall not
the convention center due to renovation/construction of this current building. Norm asked for any other
questions concerns before making a motion. Motion is “To move the Iowa Pro-Am to Des Moines in 2012
for a 5 year contract upon the written contract of the prices given by Convention Center (see attached
sheet) including the CVB $3,500 per year and Scheels $10,000 as a title sponsor per year and to get an
escape clause.” 2 nd Dean Conrad, Motion passes.
‣ John Shappell motions “no awards be given to anyone shooting in an uncontested class, unless they shoot
higher then the last years score, or set a record” 2 nd Tressia Bretsch, motion fails.
‣ Don Chipman motions “Bidding archery club is responsible for setup and tear down and putting away of
Pro-Am, also set-up, running, tear down and putting away of the practice range, keeping all proceeds as
payment. Also must provide own insurance, targets, and target butts for the 2012 Pro-Am. This
abolishes the 10 percent share of the host club in the current contract of the Pro-am.” 2 nd John Carlson,
motion passes.
Motion to adjourn Ron Teufel, 2 nd Don Chipman Motion passed.
2010 Deer Log Written By Ken Yeater
From the pictures it will be obvious that I am not holding my usual Hoyt compound. I had an accident in October with my
ATV while putting out stands. No broken bones or fractures, just hyper extended leaving my right wrist too painful to pull
my compound so I bought a cross bow (Xbow). Perception is that would make it easy to harvest any animal at any
distance.......... not! They are heavy, awkward, and noisy. However, they do shoot the bolt very fast, but the speed drops
off fast so shot distance is limited to about that of a compound. Main thing, it has a crank to get the string back and the
trigger cocked, therefore it is suited to person with a permanent handicap or is temporarily physical challenged as I
currently am. Certainly hope I will be able to shoot finger compound for the ProAm and release compound by Spring 2011
turkey season.
By the time that the Xbow got here and I had it sighted in the first week of the season passed with me at idle. During the 9
Oct evening hunt I harvested a doe, followed five days later with the second doe, and then finally on the morning of 14
Nov I got a nice buck. Below is the story of the buck as written in my deer log.
14 NOV AM 1 DEER. HARVESTED A 10 POINT 190 BUCK.
38 OVERCAST WIND CALM. SUNDAY SO EXPECTING
SHOT GUNNERS TO BE OUT TODAY. NORMALLY WOULD
HUNT WHERE THEY WOULD DRIVE DEER TO ME.
HOWEVER, I WANTED TO HUNT A CERTAIN TRAIL USED
BY DEER RETURNING FROM A CORN FIELD WEST. I
HAVE NOT BEEN THERE FOR A LONG TIME. IT HAD AN
EARLY SCRAPE AND DOES PLUS A BIG BUCK ON TRAIL
CAMERA IN OCT. SO WENT THERE. SLOW WALKED
WEST SIDE OF LONG FIELD ALL THE WAY AROUND
SOUTH END TO JUST NORTH OF SOUTHEAST CORNER
WHERE MY PATH TO BLIND IS LOCATED. FOUND MY
PATH ENTRANCE BY SKILL OR LUCK. LOTS OF LEAVES
AND NOISY IN WOODS DESPITE A LITTLE RAIN LAST
NIGHT. GOT TO AND UP INTO BLIND OK. JUST SETTLED
AND HEAR HUFF SOUND EAST. OH NO! BUT NO
RUNNING OFF. IN A FEW MINUTES SAME NOISE
FOLLOWED BY A COON FIGHT, WHEW. JUST AFTER FIRST LIGHT HEAR WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A DEER WALKING
BEHIND ME AND DOWNHILL. LOOKED AND SAW NOTHING. BACK TO WATCHING TRAIL AND CPR FIELD TO
WEST. THEN HEARD SAME NOISE AGAIN. TURNED TO LOOK AND SPOTTED A LARGE DARK DEER WALKING EAST
DOWNHILL. TOOK SAFETY OFF AND TRIED TO GET XBOW UP AND DOT ON HIM. BUT, XBOW LIMB HIT TREE
TRUNK SO HAD TO WAIT FOR HIM TO MOVE AGAIN. FINALLY GOT DOT ON HIM AND SHOT WENT WITHOUT ME
THINKING ABOUT SQUEEZING THE TRIGGER. THE BOLT GOES SO FAST YOU CANNOT SEE IT FLY, BUT HIS
REACTION SAID HE WAS HIT HARD. UPHILL HE RAN NORTHEAST AND OVER A RIDGE OUT OF SIGHT LIKE A
FLASH. THEN HEARD CRASHING NOISES AND I SAID "HE IS GOING DOWN." I COULD NOT GET DOWN FAST
ENOUGH TO TRY AND FIND BOLT WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN JUST PAST A TREE I MENTALLY REFERENCED AS
WHERE HE WAS JUST BEFORE THE SHOT. I COULD NOT FIND THE BOLT WHICH MAY HAVE BURIED IN THE DIRT
AND LEAVES AFTER PASSING THRU HIM OR WORST, DID I REALLY MISS AND IS IT REALLY BURIED INTO THE
DIRT? I BEGAN TO LOOK FOR BLOOD. FOUND A LITTLE THEN LOTS. YOU GET THAT FEELING OF GREAT HOPE
YET UNCERTAINTY. I FOLLOWED THE BLOOD TO THE TOP OF THE RIDGE. IT WAS AGONIZINGLY SLOW. I
WANTED TO JUST GO AND LOOK OVER THE TOP OF THE RIDGE, BUT THEN I MIGHT MOVE A SPOT OF BLOOD
THAT COULD HELP ME CONTINUE TO KNOW HIS FLIGHT PATH AND TO RECOVER HIM. MORE BLOOD DROPS SO
KEEP GOING. JUST OVER THE RIDGE I COULD SEE WHERE HE WENT,WITHOUT LOOKING FOR BLOOD, BY THE
MESSED UP LEAVES WHERE HE RAN. LOOKED AHEAD TO SEE IF I COULD SPOT HIM. THOUGHT I SAW HIM THEN
SAID NO AND WENT BACK TO TRAILING. I GOT A LITTLE FARTHER AND LOOKED AGAIN AND KNEW IT WAS HIM
SO RAN TO HIM THINKING NOW WHAT DO I HAVE? MEANING WHICH OF THE BIG BUCKS I HAVE SEEN, I HAVE
BEEN WITHIN 20 YARDS SIX TIMES JUST THIS LAST WEEK AND COULD NOT SHOT THE XBOW FOR BLIND TREE
TRUNK OR WHATEVER REASON -XBOWS ARE NOT A SURE THING! OR WAS HE ONE THAT I HAVE ON A TRAIL
CAMERA? AS I GOT CLOSE COULD SEE HIS BODY WAS BIG AND WHERE I HIT HIM, BUT HIS HEAD WAS BEHIND A
BUNCH OF STICKS. GRABBED THE ONE ANTLER I COULD SEE AND LIFTED HIS HEAD. OH, SUPER BUCK! ALL THE
WORRY OF GETTING A GOOD ONE AFTER ALL THE WORK AND PROBLEMS WITH WRIST AND XBOW LEFT WITH
THAT SIGHT. WEIRD, I GET PHOTOS OF BUCKS ON CAMERA THAT I NEVER SEE AND THIS ONE I DO NOT HAVE
ANY PHOTOS OF. I GOT A GOOD BUCK. THANK YOU GOD. WHAT A RELIEF. PROPPED HIS HEAD UP AGAINST A
SMALL TREE AND TOOK SOME PHOTOS USING
2010 Deer Log Written By Ken Yeater
TIMER ON THE LITTLE SONY SURE SHOT CAMERA I CARRY WITH EVERY DAY. THAT HEAVY PACK WILL BE
LIGHTER NOW. TAGGED HIM AND PUT SOME OF MY CLOTHES ON HIM TO KEEP THE YOTES AWAY AND HEADED
BACK TO MY TRUCK. ON THE WAY I STOPPED TO LOOK FOR THE BOLT AND STILL COULD NOT FIND IT DESPITE
MUCH SEARCHING IN THE LEAVES. THEN I STOOD UP AND TURNED AROUND TO FIND MY REFERENCE TREE
AND SPOTTED THE FLETCHINGs OFF TO ONE SIDE OF WHERE HE RAN. HE HAD CARRIED IT WITH HIM AND IT
BROKE OFF ABOUT 20 YARDS FROM WHERE THE BLOOD STARTED. I WENT BACK TO LOOK AT HIS RIGHT SIDE.
THE BOLT HIT HIM IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS LEFT LEG BUT DID NOT COME OUT HIS RIGHT SIDE. CALLED HOME TO
TELL CAROLE. DECIDED I WOULD TRY TO GET HIM OUT USING SHIPMAN'S DEER CART. DROVE TRUCK TO EDGE
OF WOODS 100 YARD FROM HIM. I GOT HIM ON THE CART, BUT COULD NOT PULL HIM UPHILL. CALLED HOME
AGAIN AND TOLD CAROLE TO OPEN THE GARAGE SO I COULD GET MY ATV LOADED QUICKER. GOT HOME, GOT
ATV ON TRAILER, AND WE HEADED OUT. TIED CART TO BACK RACK AND STARTED FOR THE EDGE OF THE
WOODS. MANY FALLEN LOGS HERE AND TREES CLOSE TOGETHER SO IT WAS DIFFICULT MANEUVERING ATV.
FINALLY GOT HIM BACK TO TRUCK AND TRANSFERRED HIM FROM TRAILER TO BED OF TRUCK THEN HOOKED
UP TRAILER, THEN LOADED ATV. HOME AND FIELD DRESSED HIM. GOOD THING I NOTICED SOMETHING AT HIS
RIGHT ELBOW. THOUGHT IT WAS A BURR, BUT WHEN I FELT IT REALIZED IT WAS THE POINT OF THE BROAD
HEAD. THE BOLD HAD HIT HIS LEFT LEG BONE, WENT THRU HIS LEFT LUNG, SLICED ACROSS HIS HEART
MAKING A HUGE SLASHING HOLE ON EXITING, WENT THRU HIS RIGHT LUNG, AND PUNCHED HALFWAY THRU
HIS RIGHT LEG SKIN. ONE BLADE WAS CURLED AND THE OTHER TWO WERE OK. HIS CHEST CAVITY WAS
COMPLETELY FILLED WITH BLOOD. WHICH IS WHY, ALTHOUGH BLOOD WAS FAIRLY EASY TO FOLLOW, THERE
WAS NOT ALL THAT MUCH ON THE GROUND FOR A DOUBLE LUNG AND HEART HIT. IMPORTANT INFO IS THAT
THE SHOT WAS 20 YARDS, HE WENT 85 YARDS, AND HE WEIGHED AN ESTIMATED 190 POUNDS. HE WAS NOT ON
THE MAIN TRAIL, BUT THERE WAS A FAR LESS USED ONE. IT IS DOWNHILL AND USUALLY DOWNWIND OF THE
MAIN TRAIL. HE WAS PROBABLY THE ONLY BUCK USING IT. IT WAS THERE SO HE COULD CHECK FOR DOES OR
DANGER ON THE MAIN TRAIL WHEN HE HEADED FOR THE CORN FIELD IN THE EVENINGS. GOOD THING THE
WIND WAS GOING WITH HIM, IT WAS MORNING, AND I DID NOT WAIT ANY LONGER TO SHOOT OR HE COULD
HAVE GOTTEN IN MY WIND. LIKE TIRED MATURE WISE BUCKS THIS TIME OF THE YEAR THEY MAKE MISTAKES
AND DO THINGS THEY NORMALLY WOULD NOT AND IT COST HIM BECAUSE I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO PICK THE
RIGHT SPOT AT THE RIGHT TIME. SETTLED 0720 LEFT 0730.
Introducing New ISAA Board Members for 2011
ISAA President Diana Deaton
As the President just thought I would let you know a few things about me..........I was born and
raised in Newton, Ia. With my father at the time being a gun dealer I could not help but learn to
shoot....in fact I was 4 years hold when I first learned to pull the trigger. It has been part of my
life ever since. I could probably say if it takes a shell I have probably pulled the trigger. I have
been deer hunting, pheasant hunting, fishing and running a trap line with my husband. My
husband Kevin has always been a bow hunter and got our son Bridger interested in shooting 3D
tournaments at first and then into target shooting which has truly become a large part of our
lives........Kevin and Bridger gave me some pointers and I have shot the Rinehart 100 last year
winning the Africa division and had a blast hitting the 12 on the Alien.....I was so excited.... Our daughter Callie does
some shooting, but softball is more her game but she is a big supporter of her brother at tournaments...For the last 2
years Bridger and I have been traveling all over the US for tournaments, but always make the time for the State
tournaments to support the sport where we are from...... We have met some of the nicest and most down to earth
people at state shoots and hope to keep meeting more. I look forward to working with the ISAA and show other states
that Iowa is the one to look up too. Lets make it a great 2011!!!!!!!!
ISAA 1 st Vice President Dean Conrad
I started bowhunting back in the 60's with a Bear recurve. Shot my first deer in
1972 a nice 10 point with that bow. Since than I have shot many deer, elk,
bears, caribou, coyotes, and small game with my bows. In the 80's I started to
shoot target archery and 3Ds. I enjoy shooting the old way with fingers and
have won one national indoor title as a BHFSL. My family and I have enjoyed
archery and the people we have met in our archery adventure so far.
ISAA 2 nd Vice President Dan Veith
I was born and raised on a farm four miles south of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. in
1955. I graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa and have been
on the police department since 1976. We always had three hay bales with a
paper plate on them to shoot at. During the winter, I shot up in the hay mow of
the barn. I have never shot a tournament in my life, but I love the sport. I am
married to my wife Kathleen who teaches first grade at All Saints Catholic
School. I have four children, Austin who lives in Boulder, Co., Jacob who is a
calvary scout in United States army and is attached to the 101st Airborne in
Afghanistan, Joseph who is a sophomore at Davenport Central High School and
Molly who is an eighth grade at All Saints Catholic School.
I got Joe and Molly involved in archery as something we could do after school together, and after "thousands of miles
and thousands of dollars" later, here we are. I still enjoy shooting, although I don't do as much as I should or want to.
I look forward to preserving the legacy of the ISAA and keeping it one of the premier state archery associations in the
United States.
WELCOME DIANA, DEAN, AND DAN!
ISAA Committee Announces Revised Bowhunter Jamboree to “Iowa Trail Shoot”
Committee Members: John Carlson, Ed Horn, Ron Teufel
Back in Sept.at the ISAA annual board meeting, Ron Teufel, Ed Horn and myself were appointed to improve our Bowhunter
Jamboree. We have given this much thought, have had several phone conversations and had a lengthy in person meeting to
come up with a fun event we can all be proud of.
GOALS: Our goals were to create an event where every archer is important, and every archer has a chance to win, not just the
top few archers. We wanted something that would be considered fun regardless of the type of archery each person enjoyed. We
also wanted to create an event that had the possibilities of becoming an outdoor version of our Iowa Pro Am, which is a large
event looked forward to by large numbers of archers.
RESEARCH: Our research discovered we could duplicate success experienced by the Redding Trail Shoot in California
and the very popular flight system at the Vegas Shoot.
THE DETAILS: We would name this event: The IOWA TRAIL SHOOT, no membership in any organization would be needed to
participate. 40 target 3d round, marked yardage, two arrows per target scoring 11 for the orange dot, 10 for the
vital, 8 for any hit whatsoever as long as the arrow sticks in the animal somewhere.
CLASSES: Adult, 18 and up, everyone flighted per scoring ability so like in Vegas, everyone competes against only those in their
own scoring range, giving everyone an opportunity to win in their flight. cubs, youth, and young adult shooters will compete using
the same ISAA guidelines used at our state events and receive ISAA awards (medals)
ENTRY FEE'S: Cub $5, Youth $7, Young Adult $15, entry fee split 50-50 with host club and ISAA
Adult entry fee $20, split as follows $9 host club (they furnish range and 3d targets) ISAA $5, $6 goes to the prize fund.
ADULT AWARDS: Championship Flight, 1st $500, 2nd $350, 3rd, $250
All other flights 1st $250, 2nd, $150 3rd, $100
This is all based on 100 participants, each additional groups of 25 will create another flight paying:
1st $75, 2nd $50, 3rd $25
SPONSOR: We are pleased to announce a sponsor has been obtained who will contribute $2000, thus assuring success in this
venture.
DATE CHANGE: We had voted on a August 28 date, however we discovered this would be on top of the Rinehart 100 shoot and
could not see that being in anyone’s best interest, The Waverly club has been consulted and they are on board
with August 21.
PROMOTION: We intend to promote this very heavily, we want to have flyers available starting with our Pro Am, so
we are asking for your vote this week. President Deaton gave permission to present this to you by email.
