Sound Lab Grades 5 & 6
Music is broadly defined as the organization of sound in
space. In this class, students take part in a series of labs that will
increase musical knowledge and demonstrate its interdisciplinary
nature. Decode it! Learn how classical composers encrypted secret
messages into their music and develop your own musical ciphers.
Explore how patterns manifest themselves in dodecaphonic (12-
tone) musical compositions and create your own tone rows. Map
it! Plot the source, notate the pitch, and measure the amplitude
of the real-world ambient noises that surround us. What is the
difference between music and noise? Dissect it! Learn how your
brain processes sound and why no two musical instruments
sound alike. Investigate the overtone series and test how well
various substances transmit sound waves. Write it! Expand
your musical vocabulary and creative writing abilities through
listening sessions and short writing assignments.
Creating a Passion into a Profession
After graduating from Illinois
Wesleyan University in 2006,
Zachary Zube ’02 decided to pursue
his acting career in Chicago. The
recent graduate brought his talents to
the Windy City to turn his passion
into a professional career. To Zach’s
surprise, he would discover another
life passion and that too would
become a profession.
As a young adult, Zach found himself on his own for the
first time. He was responsible to create a healthy balance of
work and personal time, while dealing with a vigorous work
schedule. Zach became busier with auditions and prepping for
performances, and found it difficult to take time for himself.
He sought different techniques to help manage his health, and
realized that the benefits from yoga would provide him the
healthy outlet he was seeking.
Zach began practicing yoga on a regular basis. He enjoyed
the physical benefits, but began relying on the practice for the
wellness and healing elements that yoga can provide. In 2008,
Zach started teacher training with the goal to help others find
peace and clarity in daily life.
“I want my students to gain skills that can help them deal
with stress even when they are not physically in the studio,”
said Zach. “It is important for me to instill the healing and
wellness aspect of yoga into my teachings. I also want all of my
students to feel comfortable in my class. I find that people can
be intimidated by the practice. A goal of mine is to break down
those barriers to show that yoga can benefit everyone.”
Zach has always been mindful of his health. At the age of ten,
he was diagnosed with leukemia. Growing up, Zach had always
had his parents to oversee his health, but for the first time he
would have to take complete ownership of his wellness. For
him, yoga has provided empowerment.
Yoga has given Zach the tools to deal with his anxiety
organically. Yoga has also ignited a passion to help others feel
empowered over their personal health. The yogi understands
that his students cannot attend yoga classes every day, so he
composes newsletters that he sends out to his followers and
has created a website called Zach Does Yoga. The site offers
healthy tips, addresses health issues, and provides his class and
workshop schedules. Visit his site at www.zachdoesyoga.wix.
